This week, skaters had their last chance to earn their country a spot at the 2022 Olympic Games at the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy. Alysa Liu and Vincent Zhou earned top honors and third sports for Team USA, with Roman Sadovsky earning a second spot for Skate Canada and Hailey Kops and Evgeni Krasnopolski overcoming the odds to earn a spot for Team Israel. Other top performances were delivered by Ekaterina Kurakova, Alexia Paganini, Adam Siao Him Fa and Mark Kondratiuk. Meanwhile, Alexandra Trusova attempted her triple axel again at the first stage of the Russian Cup and Evgenia Medvedeva reimagined Alegria with a successful two-handed cartwheel. At the JGP, Adelia Petrosyan earned top honors and Lindsay Thorngren earned her second medal of the series. It is another jam packed episode of 'This and That'!.

12 year old Russian girls have fan clubs. There are just as many super talented girls in Japan, but since they have no international exposure, no one knows them. Not using you tube, or another streaming service (with world wide access) for internal competitions is just stupid, and limits the earning power of their 'stars', not to mention lower scores for their skaters in competition. Ditto Korea.
@herm712
@herm712 2 жыл бұрын
@@jilljalili5365 Ditto the US. One thing about Russia, it promotes its figure skating stars. They know they have an audience--not only inside their country but outside as well--and they capitalize on it. That's smart and it's good for their skaters and their skating program. Televising the test skates, doing the Russia Cup events and making them available outside of the country... I think it'd be great if other countries were able to promote and feature their skaters in such a way.

TimeStamps: 0:00 Introduction and brief intro of what is to come. 0:36 Nebelhorn Trophy 1:07 Israeli team qualified for the Olympics! 2:18 Jonathan’s new vase! Also Happy Birthday!! 2:38 Polish Pairs Team 3:33 Ladies 3:47 brief mention of Lindsey Thorngren, Trusova and Alysa Liu 4:07 Alysa 5:27 Ekaterina Kurakova 6:59 Nebelhorn nerves 7:47 Alexia Paganini 9:45 Men’s Event Nebelhorn, Vincent and Shin Amano. Vincent jump unders at Nebelhorn FS. 11:39 Roman Sadovsky. Great skating. Got the second spot for Canada. Did win nationals two years ago, did poorly at 2020 4CC. Who does the federation send, Nam or Roman granted that Keegan is already going. Who do they send really. 13:50 Jason Brown reference 14:50 had Nam Nguyen gone would he have done better or not? 15:18 Vincent winning 18:20 Adam (France) 18:51 Mark (Russia) 19:25 Frangipiani (Italy) 19:39 Korean men. They have 2 spots for the Olympics. 19:52 Brendan Kerry. Great SP! 20:03 Back to Womens event at Nebelhorn 20:50 Shabatova (former Russian Skater now representing Ukraine, did qualify a spot). 22:40 Kurakova (whom I thought should have been higher in the free than Alysa but I’ll digress) very great performance here at Nebelhorn! Qualified for the Olympics representing Poland 27:24 Takahashi 28:53 Kailani Craine, great SP, she qualified for the Olympics! Sweden didn’t need the spot. Earned that at worlds. 29:28 Paganini, 2nd in short, 5th in long, she did qualify for the Olympics. 29:34 messiness in the pairs. China did Not earn the 3rd spot. Evgeni (Israel) qualified though 31:07 Alexandra Trusova withdrawal after SP at the first Russian Cup. Performed the short only, attempted the triple Axel, got a q, Tuktamysheva made a few errors in the short but won the free after Trusova’s withdrawal. 35:52 Tuktamysheva, great SP but had mistakes. Beautiful SP music choice. Free not my favorite but I’m so behind her. I hope she gets the spot but it may be unlikely. She has defied odds in the past. 37:21 Sambo 70 38:36 Alysa Liu 38:49 Mariah Bell 38:59 Nathan Chen 39:06 back to Tuktamysheva. Quads? She is a fighter. Needs the quad and two triple axels. Wait and see what will perspire this season. 40:46 Tarasova/Morozov. Programs are boring and not very interesting in my opinion. They look good though. High throws. Better focus. More confident. 43:47 Russian cup 1 mens event. The other guys. Great technical content. Depths however some inconsistencies. 44:51 JGP 44:57 Thorngren hung on to a medal with a tough field 45:10 Korean lady (was 2nd in short) mentioned again at 53:00 because she was skating to Miss Saigon Top 4 ladies very strong 44:45 Samoldelkina (1st in free, Davydov student), 4S exciting! 46:52 Veronika Zhilina had to withdraw from her next JGP due to an injury 47:06 back to Thorngren, 3A attempts 52:02 Petrosian 54:32 Medvedeva brings back ALEGRIA!!!!! 57:02 Olympic season talk, Japan Open coming soon. 57:24 Rika Kihira at Cricket Club 57:44 Yuma 58:46 Shoma 59:36 Moment of the Week 1:00:44-1:00:47 Outro

For the skater pyramids, you can make an electronic version and display on your TV/monitor, or go old school and mount the photos on squares of foam board or poster board. Adhere Velcro on the backs. Kurakova was the biggest surprise of the Challenger series, so far. She is doing fine with her current team. But I disagree she could have beaten Alysa at Nebelhorn. She lost by nearly 14 points. She would have had to score 75 in the short program, at least. She is a well-deserving silver medalist at both events.

The pairs results really drove home to me that Zhao Hongbo's tenure as the overseer of Chinese pairs really has been a failure at developing new talent. I normally think that focusing on fed people tends to be way overdone, since in most countries the feds' roles in skater development are actually much smaller than fan discussions tend to imagine, but China is not most countries; it is literally an authoritarian state. The #3 Chinese pair should not be losing to Evgeni Krasnopolski and a partner he teamed up with three months earlier.

Evgenia’s Alegria is a masterpiece, she had a very creative and innovative idea and polished her image from head to toe. This girl always amazes me, you can see that figure skating is her life and she does everything she can to get better. I’m so happy that she could show it, even in a simplified form and the wheel was cool!Also I’m quite impressed with her conduction of the Sambo Jubilee, it was live, so no retakes and quite long but she handled it like a pro and presented herself remarkably well. Keegan is Canada’s top man. Roman would not have placed top 10 like Keegan had. He bombed in the last 4CC, and Canada uses that comp to form the world team unlike the US. In juniors, Roman displayed his talent, but was toiling around with constant inconsistency as well.

Roman was honestly the biggest disappointment. He could be the next Patrick Chan. He needs to land those jumps though. He almost blew it for Canada. He barely got Canada qualified. If the ISU uses point totals to decide who's in the JGPF, then Lindsay Thorngren doesn't have the points from both of her assignments to qualify. If Isabeau can score over 200 points in her next assignment she'll probably qualify, and that is only because Zhilina is injured.

There is no need of that since its not a competition, and why the camera should zoom out of Zhenya jumps and not others? With that state of mind they should have zoom out every unclear jump of Havi and Zagi. Zhenya skating in a show, she is not in her best form yet, but she jumps triples. still, there are girls from Canada and USA who cant handle the pressure to show the same jumps in a competitions! Regarding Roman's performance and the level of confidence the federation has in him, the reality is that Roman has never skated a clean short program as a senior, either internationally or at nationals. I don't think he's ever done a clean free skate either, but the latter isn't exactly unusual in men's -- but the short program weakness is a huge problem that he seems no closer to overcoming now than two years ago. He's been to four ISU championships (3 Junior Worlds and one 4CC) and bombed all of them; his highest placement was 13th at his very first one, 2014 Junior Worlds, his lowest was 17th at 2017 Junior Worlds, and his most recent was 16th at 2020 Four Continents. Of course the federation doesn't have confidence in him, he hasn't earned it. If they had sent him to Worlds he would most likely have done exactly the same thing he did here, and Canada might even have been trying to just qualify a single spot at Nebelhorn, not a potential second.

Roman and Canada should give a huge thanks to Jin and China for bombing so badly at worlds. Nam has a huge chance after this performance. I think there will be sentimentality to send Nam because he lost his shot at going to the previous Olympics by like half a point or something (losing to Keegan in Nationals). If you look at the skating protocol, Roman’s under rotations were a lot worse than Vincent’s. Imo, nationals judging has a certain bias to it that makes it different to intl judging, so I don’t mind when the federation has an independent mind. To comment on Vincent’s scores, this is the range of scores that he will get in the Olympics for PCS if he skates clean like this. I think his skating and performance quality has improved greatly this season.

@MrChaseBlue

@@ColonelGreen bc China was largely expected to retain two spots at last year’s worlds. Since Jin bombed and Han Yan was unable to place top 10, China lost a spot and so there was an extra spot available at Nebelhorn than was expected for the men as opposed to the women. The chance for Alysa and Lindsay to be in top 5 internationally is MUCH bigger than other senior ladies (Mariah, Karen, Bradie, and Amber). Competition is NOT about the skating skills and jumps, it's also about the "mental strength" and "consistency". On paper, Alexandra Trusova should beat Anna Shcherbakova to be Russian champion and World champion because Sasha can throw 5 quads. In reality, Anna beats Sasha in every competition because Anna has better consistency and stronger mental strength. Rika Kihira has the same mental weakness just like Sasha. I was rooting for Roman so bad and I am so glad he managed to snag that second Canadian spot. I still don't think Skate Canada is going to send him, unless he medals twice at his Grand Prix Events, goes to the GPFinals. Which realistically speaking is almost impossible. And keeps his title as national champion. But if they don't send him anywhere to gain experience in dealing with those nerves or provide a mental coach (which the Belgian fed did with Kevin Van Der Perren back in the day), I don't think it's gonna happen. Roman's TES for his long lacks. He needs a quad toe in his repertoire badly or a quad Lutz since his entry edge for Lutz is so solid. People saying he was saved by his PCS, yes. He was and rightfully so. His quality of edges and footwork. Amazing. Not to mention his spins. They are gorgeous. Getting a level 4 on a camel spin for a man is hard enough as it is. To me Skate Canada has literally only Keegan, Nam and Roman to chose from when it comes to the Olympics. Unless a miracle happens and Conrad Orzel can get his nerves under control and preforms super clean. Or they send Corey Circelli who still competes in the Junior Grand Prix.

And while that is a bit of experience, there weren't as many high stakes in those events, with the exception of Four Continents considering how well he had done at Nationals that year and look how that went. Worlds last season and Olympics this season can't be compared. It is all about politics, Eteri wants all her students in Beijing and a Russian sweep there too. Last season was weaker, Alena Kostornaia was struggling and Valieva still wasn't eligible to compete, it was easier to Liza to qualify to Worlds where she was well prepared. But this season Tuktamysheva can't afford to make any mistakes on the 3A or any other jumps because she is a weaker skater overall with not so great spins and PCS but even then her chances are really slim. I think Eteri's students will go to the Olympics in the ladies but in the men it is possible two Mishin students, Kolyada and Semenenko.

Watching the junior ice dance JGP Slovenia, I found a lot of the same music. Rain in Your Black Eyes, Paint it Black...ugh. I wonder if the poor skaters have any choice in their music, and if they do, don't they have any other choices besides old programs of senior skaters? It gets tiresome. Though, the team that skated to the Indian music trying to be Davis/White didn't seem to do as much practice in Indian dance the way the former did. Disappointing. The outfits were a riot of color, not at all pleasing to my eyes. Again, a lot of musical cuts that were ugly to hear. Of course Vincent Zhou and Alysa Liu won 3 spots for the US; they'd have to bomb really badly to not win gold. Liu's popped 3A was unfortunate, but at least this is just a minor (Olympic!) qualifier. She will need the 3A at Beijing next year. US men's team will be Chen, Brown and Zhou. Paniot can go to 4CC and maybe Worlds if Chen or Brown or Zhou decide to waive that competition. I was pleasantly surprised to see Germany and Spain win Olympic spots; without Aliona Savchenko or Javier Fernandez, too, it shows that there is a future for skating in these countries who are not as big as the US, Russia or Japan. The Chinese team just didn't perform to snuff in the Free. I wonder how skaters at Shanghai Open will perform. It'll be great to see Sui/Han and Peng/Jin again. They'd be enough to take the podium, without a third pairs team, really. The other Chinese pairs team need to go for 2026, because their skills are not up to S/H or the Russians' levels. Trusova is going to be on the Olympic team, but as for being THE Olympic champion, I think Valieva is still a major contender (should Kostornaia or Scherbakova not perform well). The 3A needs to go. Period. She needs to stick with her best quads, 2A and 3-3 combo in the free, but it's clear she's quite ambitious and won't have it any other way but her way. Let all the other girls worry about their programs. Adam Siao Sim Fa of France was slammin' in that Star Wars program! That step sequence...I haven't felt this excited in a man's program since 2018! Elizaveta's chances are not low. She is very consistent scoring 220+, and, if skated cleanly with her current status of vice-WC and very effective programs she has this season, she could be getting around 235. This would likely be enough to beat clean Kromych, who is at this moment closest to her in scoring potential. As for Trusova, she is extremely vulnerable: it has been years since she performed clean programs at the international competitions. And the current situation of being in the top shape, but nearly losing it to unknown Korean skater, just serves as another evidence of that. With Tuktamysheva it is to gain her top shape - which is very realistic considering the time, while for Trusova it is to overcome mental issues, which is unpredictable. So yes, chances for Tuktamysheva depend mainly from Trusova (and herself). Valieva is still the strongest contender for Olympic spot, because even if not clean, she would still beat at least 4 ladies out of the seven. Shcherbakova is smart and has great athletic mentality; she can make it into Olympic team even without quads with her 3lz-3lo and highest PCS. Kostornaia, unfortunately, seems to be even further away than Usacheva without 3A.

Very unlikely Hanyu will win Gold,,,,if he goes to Olympics he would need to be perfect and hope Nathan makes multiple errors. Nathan usually beats Hanyu by 40 points, so if Nathan is on, and he is very consistent, there’s no hope for anyone else for Gold.

Kamila too gets nervous , literally anything can happen in those few months , take a look at veronika for example how fast she is now out of the jgp because of injury. A few days before none would have thought about that.

My bet is on Anna. Anna is very consistent and she seems very calm. Anna also gets her QUAD back according to the news.

I'm afraid that Olympics will be a ''competition of nerves'' - Kamilla can be under pressure, also..... Who knows, Kihira, Liu and Young You have a great chance to find their place at Olympics podium. I wouldn't neglect them.

@@nenavujicin7882 Kihira and Young You show lots of nerves in the last season. Young You is vulnerable because Korea only has 2 spots this year. She may not make to the Olympics team at all. I do think Kaori Sakamoto has better chance at podium than Kihira. Kaori has stronger mental strength than Rika. 3Axel and Quad are very risky elements. You need someone as calm as Anna to land the big jumps in big major competition.
