This week, skating got cutthroat at the 2022 Canadian Figure Skating Championships, as Vanessa James and Eric Radford were named to the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games over Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud. Meanwhile in America, people are still buzzing over Ilia Malinin, Jason Brown and Vincent Zhou. Up North, hell froze over, as Meagan Duhamel cried on camera over Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier proved they are contenders for an Olympic medal. And Keegan Messing, Roman Sadovsky and Madeline Schizas became Olympic team members. Also this week, Arthur Liu told us about his egg donor, and Yelim Kim, Young You, Haein Lee, Jia Shin and Jun Hwan Cha brought their best stuff for the 2022 Korean Figure Skating Championships. We break it all down on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

you are so right about evelyn and trennt. people in the sport, even a large number of very respected and knowledgable people, have a tendency of selectively forgetting the committee's criteria when they see one clean performance and then act so indignant about it in the aftermath. it's one of the most frustrating things about the sport right now

@mooniexplans im not going to speculate if skate canada knew they wanted J/R to go as soon as they were formed and even if they had why would they be open about that. all i know is J/R met the selection criteria far more than W/M. but i agree they should have told them personally and i also blame the coach and all the other figures in the sport encouraging them to feel slighted when they weren't because it is such a disservice to them going forward. especially when they were in a vulnerable emotional state.

If judging were more accurate then it'd be easier to say. Call the mistakes, reward the artistry. I don't know why skating has to always have the same winners, if a new skater outskates the veterans, let them win. I don't know Vincent as a person but I like him as a skater.

The key takeaway for fans is that selection processes are not to be blamed on the skaters, everyone worked very hard to get what they got (and you guys are always super respectful about that delineation). It must be very difficult to think that nobody believes in you/ thinks you should be stripped of what ought to be a huge accomplishment. Onus on selection committees and judging panels to act robustly and in good faith.

Vincent is inconsistent, but people forget that Ilia is as well. Ilia had one good competition, which just happened to be at nationals. Considering Ilia’s history (JGPs, Skate America assignment last year were all very shaky), it’s just as likely he makes mistakes on every quad at the Olympics than it is he goes clean. That being said, that statement is also entirely applicable for Vincent as well. That’s why it’s probably better to send Vincent, just because at least he has more international reputation that could help him on the PCS side.

Every single men's skater is inconsistent except Nathan, but even Nathan bombed the previous olympics. Ilia earned his spot and not sending him because he "might make mistakes" is nonsense, what was the point of holding Nationals then? A clean Brown can't get a medal, a clean Malinin can

When Ross Miner was passed over, TSL talked about the importance of having clear criteria to inform skaters in advance of how selection would be made. Jonathan seems to have changed his mind in arguing for a more holistic analysis. I'm still in favor of having strict criteria because I think it reduces the potential for cronyism, corruption, or unfair favoritism. (You see this with big companies, which create strict criteria for hiring and promotion to address the effects unconscious bias.)

I agree with this. But it will always be subjective. "Body of work" means this past season? Or their entire career, or how they matched up against the other American skaters? It can be swung all kinds of ways. For a young skater who does not have a track record as a senior, there is no "body of work" compared to skaters up to a decade older. If it is straight up top three, the way it used to be, that is more honest in a way, but also complicated with covid-postive withdrawals here.

As it should be. Have any of you actually watched Ilia on the Junior Grand Prix? He had two rough outings and the Junior men this season were incredibly weak. One could win easily with just a few triple axels. He even lost points with a 3Lz-popped single loop. There is plenty of work to be done on the second mark. He has nice skating skills and a good foundation but the programs are a snore and the packaging is not great. Give this kid more time. I bet the Olympics wasn’t even on his radar a few months ago. I am impressed by the progression of his technical elements in such a short amount of time but hesitant to send him based off two great performances at Nationals. This episode's take on pairs in Canada was so refreshing. IMO, going into Nationals, J/R were the number #1 team and almost a slamdunk to go to Olympics. Despite competing for only 5 months with mistakes, they managed to score 30-40 points ahead of W/M. Then they got COVID. I'm frankly aghast at Walsh's reaction, she threw around the term "bullying" and complained to Skate Canada, even though she admits that James's comment wasn't directed at her. Walsh basically did the skating equivalent of complaining to her manager. Getting your feelings hurt doesn't mean you were bullied. I don't know in what world "Our spot is secured (sic)" amounts to bullying. The sentences before and the sentences after that were conveniently left out of the article. There was just no context. For example, what if James was feeling unsafe doing the free due to deconditioning and speaking to someone who was trying to convince her to risk her safety and skate? Why didn't Walsh think she could beat KMT/M for that Olympic spot? Why didn't W/M up their technical content and skate lights out at Nationals? W/M are the obvious alternates and with covid, still a good chance that they are going to skate ALONGSIDE J/R. Ho'w's that dynamic going to work for Team Canada? Agree Keegan bringing his phone to the camera for a close up of his baby was obnoxious. That's what Instagram is for. He's a dad, yay for him. But who is this grainy close up for? His wife knows what the baby looks like. Also didn't think that free was anything to celebrate, it was a fight for the jumps throughout the free.

at the end of the day, USFS followed their own selection criteria. now whether the criteria in itself is fair is a different story but it would be EVEN MORE UNFAIR and morally wrong to disregard criteria that was published at the beginning of the season. everyone had access to the criteria and knew what competitions and scores would be weighted more heavily. it's exactly what adam did - know that criteria back to front so you have an impenetrable argument for selection. i can't believe i am defending USFS but here we are. maybe next quad their selection criteria will be different and placements at nationals will be given more priority. but it was clear from the start of the season what was most important for the 2022 team. it also makes me very sad to see some of the comments towards jason - of him being not deserving of a spot, of 'robbing' ilia and in addition the oh so lovely outright homophobic comments towards him. does it need to be reminded that without jason there wouldn't have even BEEN a third spot for which ilia would have been contending for. disagreeing with the selection process is one thing, acting as if jason or vincent unfairly "stole" a spot is another.

What does this alleged homophobia have to do with anything? Regardless of sexuality, Jason Brown has not landed a single quad in his career and he got gifted a spot over the National Silver medalist who was twelve points better than him. It's blatant favoritism. The Adam vs Ross situation is nowhere near the same, Ross was nowhere near close to landing multiple quads and scoring +300 points as Ilia is.
@fzztsimmons
@fzztsimmons 2 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightRain111 I was talking about comments I've seen that denigrate Jason's skating by calling him a slur or that he only got a place because of his sexuality. And Jason was not "gifted" a spot - he met more of the criteria than Ilia did, that's fact. It's not favouritism - the criteria was available for everyone to read. Jason's median score was significantly above Ilias. Ilia only competed in one senior challenger event where he bombed and missed the minimum tes for worlds. If Ilia had not bombed and earned a higher score above Jason's season average he would have met more criteria and would have gone instead of Jason. It actually shows that his team didn't prepare for the chance he would do so well at Nationals otherwise they should have sent him to more senior competitions to improve his scores. You want to have a look at his protocols on skating scores for his last few competitions - they are littered with qs and underrotations. Also if you think Ilia will earn 300 points on the international circuit you're delusional. His PCS at his only senior international competition was in the 7s. There are many men who would and should score above him - Chen, Hanyu, Shoma, Yuma, Vincent, Kolyada. Nationals inflation isn't real.

As for comparing Keegan & Roman for the team event. Actually this season Keegan does not do very well the long program. As for the short he has 90 points in Zagreb but he struggled a lot with free at both gran prix events he participated. it will be interesting to see the choice which will be made by Skate Canada. Watched some clips of the Korean skaters. It was obvious the way US Nationals, Russian Nationals and Japanese nationals went, with the top 2 skaters on the podium going to Beijing. The Korean women were packaged beautifully; Haein Lee's free costume and Yelim Kim's Turandot's dress were the best ones to me. IT's too bad that only two spot for the women are allowed. Haein Lee would have gone if there was a 3rd spot. Agreed on You Young's 3A and Kim Yelim's 3-3s. At least KSU is smart enough to send their best skaters who have the potential to go 5-7. I'm not worried about the US men, because Nathan will be on the podium in Beijing anyways. Ilia Malinin could potentially be sent to Worlds if Nathan or Vincent do not go.

@TheSkatingLesson Hi! About your opening discussion on Vincent Zhou's calls and marks: Did you catch the discussion about the GOE marks for his SP 4Sq? The other marks and calls can always be criticized for being "too generous", but in that case, 5 out of those 9 GOE marks were "not in compliance with the rules": It's not "to the judges' discretion", but a rule that a q means they have to go down with whatever mark they would have otherwise given by 2. Therefore, the maximum they could have given for that 4Sq was "+3". Yet, there were 4 +4s and even one +5. This "judging mistake"(?) alone would, if it hadn't happened, be enough to change the end result of the competition between Vincent and Jason. Vincent won by 0.38pts, if you were to lower those "illegal" marks by 2, he'd have earned 1.3 points less. Yes, I think Ilia is the "not underrotating" alternative to Vincent and should go to the Olympics instead of him. Jason offers something different. Different that a bland "Starry < starry

Another angle i think is important to look at and discuss regarding team selections is the whole age argument. USFS and JSF (+ and other federations) can’t make an argument for raising the age requirement if they are sending the new fresh skater. It would look bad if they sent 17 and 16 yr old skaters while advocating for an increase in age. Sending skaters like Mariah and Jason imo makes a statement (even if the technical content isn’t there) when they have amazing performances like they just did at nationals. Just a thought!

True, but has USFSA ever given any indication they actually want to raise the age requirement? I never got that sense. US media likes their fluff pieces about Mariah being a fighter and all that (I actually feel bad how they were all acting like she was so old), but if Isabeau Levito was just a year older, she'd have rightfully won USNats and they'd have put her on that Olympic team. In 2020, arguably Mariah should have arguably won USNats, but USFS gave the win to 14-year-old Alysa with her under-rotated quads and triple axels. I also think USFSA wanted to put Malinin on the team, but like... felt that they couldn't in good conscience cut either Zhou or Brown.

I really appreciate the discussion on the Canadian Olympic selection "scandal". I actually had cancelled following a lot of skating related accounts on twitter in the last few days where there was a ton of online hate towards Vanessa & Eric. I actually appreciate all three top teams (am a huge fan of KMT!) but the backlash of the decision to select V&E has been ugly and absolutely overshadowed KMT & MM's championship win with the bad media coverage and online hate. And that newspaper article was totally strange, like a gossip column hit job; you are so right about the repercussions for this still young team (who I look forward to watching grow and develop) and their future relationship with Skate Canada. I'm also a fan of the new team of V&E (saw them compete in Vancouver in the fall - they were great!) and it's a shame that many skating fans have now turned against two of Canada's 2022 Olympians - are they going to be able to cheer for Team Canada figure skating during the Olympics or will they continue to spew hate? And how is all this drama going to affect KMT just when they performed so well? Will they be able to bury the hatchet and be good teammates together to fight for a medal in the team event? Perhaps they all need to get mad at Russia or the US or Japan for likely taking away their title as reigning Olympic gold medalists and their medal chances this time around?

Lol. I tried to like H/D too based on Jonathan's endorsement of them to no avail. If their power is their strength, perhaps I would "get it" if watching them live.

What you said about the C/B and piper and Paul fight for bronze… I hate to be this person but have you seen the scores the Russians are getting? I actually think that it will be the Russians for 2nd and 3rd. Although I don’t think it should be, and that chick and bates and piper and Paul should be in it for the fight, I doubt they will be given a chance, that’s the way it’s looking.

Thanks! I have to be at work super early and I was also concerned that I may have contracted covid after feeling not so well and sluggish for many days. I was negative which is a huge relief

How tall is Arthur Liu? One of my fully-grown daughters is 6" shorter than I am, and the other is 4" shorter. Their dad is not tall, and they took after him!

Unlike the meticulous work done to refine and reform the Technical Element Score, the second mark has pretty much only seen minimal changes in terms of definitions of words. The ISU have decades of data- skaters, videos and scores. The ISU should consider providing clearer guidelines as to what each component looks like across the range between 0.25-10.00 and use their extensive data as evidence. E.g. they should be able to difinitely describe what skaters who earn 9.00 display with explicit examples. The should, as you suggest, refactor the components score. This will make this more balanced. This will not solve issue of judges using the PCS score to essentially rank the skaters like 6.0, but at least there will be more balance. One other consideration would be to adjust the component incriments. at the moment components increase from 0.25 to 10.00 by incriments of 0.25 Maybe reduce the incriments from 0.25 to 0.125 to provide more room for differentiation.

Some people find it exciting when the Olympics come around every four years. I find it exhausting having to tolerate new fans who do not understand the dynamics and politics of the sport and think that our beloved comment section is supposed to behave like Hoda Kotb.
