Fun fact that I forgot to mention: Tom Holland's first cinematic debut was actually in the anime "The Secret World of Arrietty" which was briefly shown at 0:47 You can see little baby Holland talking in interviews about the anime it's hella cute. Also: Ironically, my reviews are my lowest performing videos on this channel so uhh.... If... you know.... You have a friend who doesn't leave the house and watches anime all day, it'd mean a lot to me if you'd shoot my vids around. If you're here because a friend suggested my channel, say wassup in the comments!

Now that i've seen it, the thing that baffles me the most about this film is the (ab)normalcy of highschool life. in most anime, highschool is viewed through this glass of nostalgia, fun times in clubs after school and young innocence. excuse me but who tf is innocent in highschool? highschool is a place of drug, sex and drama, for the most part. something american drama shows also fail to capture by giving stakes too high and stories too serious. Highschool is defined by these moments that feel like the end of the world but are nothing but small moments of shame and sadness. this film captures it perfectly. spoilers below For exemple: it's the scene where haruki and sakura drink together. never have i seen an anime portraying underage drinking in a non-comical non-fantasy setting. Anime is usually very shy about this kind of thing, but the non apologetic kind of "it's only natural for highschoolers to drink alcohol" way it's shown here feels very fresh, and also very real. It's a sign of maturity in the storytelling, and an indicator that the film isn't worried about breaking conventional anime taboos. This extends to "the horny", with the teasing and almost rape scene. It's not fun and fanservice-y like most anime try to convey sexual tension. It's not shy either, like most highschool romcoms who try to make me believe the guy has never heard of sex and blushes when someone mentions something even remotely sexual. instead, it's very raw. this scene captures the essence of the two characters, and their intimacy. It's only natural for a young, cheerful girl about to die to tease her virgin friend, it's like screaming "i want you to only see it as a joke, but all of my worries about dying are true, and dying without experiencing this kind of intimacy is a real fear of mine". And it's a real response, from the point of view of a hormonal teenage boy to react inadequately and violently to an emotion and a need he didn't know he had until recently. It's also normal for him to realise what he's doing is wrong, and feel disgusted with himself. although, i never attempted to rape someone, reacting violently and badly to a new emotion or a new feeling is something i can personally relate to, and it's an inherent part of growing up, to figure out how you function now compared to before. these normal moments, which are more representative of highschool and adolescent life than entire animes centered around highschool life, are only made better by the fact they're brought up by a very abnormal situation: the imminent death of a young girl. I feel like that's one of the major strenght of this film, and this aspect of it fascinates me.

how this movie made me cry (*spoilers*): when he reads her diary I started being really really sad when he's reading it I started tearing up a little bit or with an enormous will to cry but was trying not to when his voice starts to crack while asking for Sakura's mother if he could cry and started tearing up more when he started fricking crying I started crying too because just like him, reality hit really hard that she's really dead and that it's not just a bad dream this anime didn't make me sad because of the ending but because of the character development it had and the relationship that they developed as well, the boring ass main character guy that didn't have friends, pretty much monotonous, indifferent as to what's and who's around him and a black and white character started being colourfoul and started caring about someone that got to be very dear to him, the girl who was pretty much infifferent to her disease on the outside but on the inside she was scared to death literally, the girl who just seemed like doing a big fake act towards the main character was actually interested in him all this time and made him develop his feelings of empathy and love, just thinking about this anime I get sad and want to cry :'(

The sad part at the start of the movie for me was realizing how good she was at hiding her emotions and pain of dying, just putting up a whole facade that she was living a happy beautiful life with having the dark reality of not knowing whether or not you'd die soon. To me this movie shows how fake and depressing life can be, putting up a front just to act happy even thought you're not.

Around a year ago i watched this anime with my close group of discord friends. By the end of it, half of us were in tears. It’s one of the best core memories i’ve had with them. We’re not as close knit as before, but if i were to find the time to reconnect everyone, i’d rewatch this movie with them in a heartbeat. In a weird way it taught me to appreciate every little moment with them, like spending time playing on our extremely broken minecraft SMP. Whether we be building together, pvping or other sorts of fuckery on a saturday night, forgetting about our worries for a time; They were one of the few highlights of my sophomore year. Man i love those guys.

It’s one of those movies you can really judge by it’s cover at first glance but if you take the time to actually watch it you get greeted with the reasoning behind the title and by finishing it your given deeper meaning and reasoning behind that statement/title Edit: all and all I cried, severely, more than I did from Your Name and A Silent Voice, those at least had uplifting and heartwarming endings this just left me sad and feeling empty but gave me a weird sense of faith for Haruki, he can go on, they both had a mark on each other there was a reason for them meeting, getting to know each other, and facing hard reality. It’s a lot to take in, I myself am still processing it all, but this is definitely a tear jerker, and is a work of art. Nothing more nothing less.

It may be a bit late for this comment, but the scene near the end that directly connects to the little prince is what gets me the most. Having read the book it was cool to see it referenced in the movie, but when the scene at the end comes with the similar art style, and all the imagery that links it to the book it had me crying. It made me realize the connections that the movie had made to the book, and it gives Sakura even more depth. It's absolutely incredible

This is the only movie and anime that actually make me cry, not because of soundtrack, because of the dialogues and the story is great for making those cry who giving attention to the movie's dialogues and story. I seen many sad anime(without science get, heard that science get is sad but I didn't watch yet) that makes me feel sad with good story, dialogues and especially soundtracks but they don't make me cry. I actually don't know but this movie really make cry like baby. I also read light novel.

I was reccomended "I want to eat your pancreas" by a friend two years or so ago I think. And even though I wasn't sure if I'd like it at first, I quickly had to realise that it was actually really friggin great and hit me right in the feels. So seeing the title being covered by you, was really nice. I love your reviews because they feel absolutely honest, genuine and are hella funny. I have never been big on animes, with just the occasional watch if a tumbnail or plot description really got me. ... or if I was just feeling too lazy to read. And I must admit that I never watched the anime. Pft heck I didn't even know there was one. But now I know, and I'm really relieved to hear that it's apparently just as heart grabing and feels-punching as the manga. Thanks for the awesome video!

I weirdly love tear-bait shows, maybe I'm so empty i need them to feel but i love the emotions they make me feel when it hits me, Show like AnoHana and Your Lie in April are great examples, i almost balled at the end of AnoHana as the story ends, heck Your Name is as you say full of what we expect yet so well that on the crater scene, i was ready for tear mode, I still enjoyed plastic memories, the show is basic but the idea of self inserting myself (I'm apparently a masochist) into these situations is just appealing. I still enjoy angel beats, its basic but... it's sad, well, Yui scene was, the ending is... well "sad" but not super sad. I don't even care now, just gimme tear-bait!
