In today's video we dive into the newest in the Neptune family from Elegoo the Neptune 4 Pro. Compared to the previous generations of Neptune printers this one has some great upgrades like an all metal hotend, Klipper firmware, linear guides, and 4 4020 blower fans for layer cooling. Today we will go through this printers specs, what setup was like, how it has performed, and I will give you my overall thoughts based on my time with it so far.

Few things... You should point out that the USB C port is a service port for serial SSH into the Linux side, not for controlling the printer. A linksys ac750 range extender is probably the best bet for Wi-Fi communication. Have you had chronic mcu shutdowns? The rk3328 is kinda notorious for that and it runs incredibly hot. There are also adxl pins on the board you can probably tap into.

For WiFi connection one can always use a WiFi extender that has Ethernet Jack. For print farm use could go from extender to a switch and then to multiple printers.

Years ago I bought some TP-Link personal routers. Super small little devices that are setup like any other router/gateway but can also be set to be used as a wireless adapter. I had to use one on my bedroom TV when the built in Wi-Fi died. A device like this would be perfect for those that don't want to or can't run an ethernet cable to the printer. The added benefit is that you don't have something plugged into the USB port when you want to print from a thumb drive.

Elegoo for me is a company of good to great quality especially for the price, and their customer service is very good. I called them because I had thermal runaway and they just immediately sent me a new board that fixed the problem. My issue with them is that they sometimes release too many incremental versions of a generational printer. I got the neptune 3 shortly after it came out, then not a month later they announced the Pro 3 and I felt a little ripped off. Very least I hope they go and try to make a coreXY printer soon, especially if they could go larger format. A Neptune XL if you will.

kinda curious if we can make something similar to that x axis fan. Ive been able to print fast on my bed slinger and now my bottleneck is cooling. I looked at some voron examples and some, like the v0.2, have extra cooling on the sides that does not move as the bed moves down so it only focuses on the fresh layers. Would be interested to see if this slowly becomes a mod people add.

I'd say that WiFi (or rather Network) is one of the main points of a Klipper printer. Also, I see a lot of comments about how WiFi doesn't work well in these Raspberry alternatives, mainly when using a third party USB adapter. I'd like to see these Skipr like boards including a good WiFi module with external antennas and a hardware button to disable the WiFi module if user wanted (maybe a jumper).

So who the heck knows what’s up. They really need to add Wi-Fi onboard, but most companies running variations of that board are using dongles too.

I just experienced a similar issue with a completely different board and manufacturer. It ended up coming down to a file that was conflicting but without really knowing what you are looking for and Linux how would you know? I spent easily an hour or two trying different variations of instructions from different sources. With how many people run wireless with Klipper manufacturers should ship with a dongle and instructions on exactly how to set up. Leaving it up to the end user has proven to be a pretty poor experience.

I'm on the fence between buying the Neptune 4 Pro and waiting for a Neptune with a larger build plate (for printing multiple parts) and builtin WiFi. No wireless LAN was a misstep on a Klipper printer. I agree that an accelerometer and a routine to calibrate input shaping on each machine to fine tune it would be great. Maybe Elegoo could make an upgrade pack with the accelerometer (with firmware upgrade) as well as a plug-and-play WiFi dongle (Ethernet or USB).

@@McKevittS - I'm not sure I really need a larger build volume so I'm thinking seriously about buying the Neptune 4 Pro. I looked at the Sovol SV07 Plus for a few days and while it does have WiFi that the Neptune 4 lacks out of the box, I just couldn't get happy with the acetyl V wheels, even though I've printed a lot on my Sovol SV01 and never needed to adjust the acetyl wheels. I'm worried that the forces from the larger build area will put more stress on the acetyl V wheels, even if I print relatively slowly, and they may deform enough under dynamic load to slightly reduce print quality. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of the Neptune 4 Pro's steel-on-steel motion control components, not only for long term reliability but also for high print quality. While I'd almost certainly upgrade the Neptune 4 Pro to WiFi for all of the advantages of a LAN attached 3D printer, the full size USB port on the front will be a huge upgrade after a couple of years of fiddling with a micro SD card as I do with the SV01. That wouldn't be too bad for a 3D printer that repeatedly prints the same products, but I do a lot of prototyping and it's a major hassle.

The Neptune 4 Plus and Max went on sale two days ago and they have built-in WiFi. I'm waiting for the Neptune 4 Pro Max (with steel rails for motion control).

1ST COMMENT. I have a Neptune 4. I'm impressed with it's price and print quality. Speed is good, too. I can start it without hassle or worry. Did you notice how much their Elegoo Cura looks like Ultimaker Cura? I don't get the print quality issues that you have. That can be a combination of belt tension, print temps, filament brand, filament moisture level, filament type, leveling, etc. I just printed a statue of David planter and it is perfect. No ringing at all. In fact, haven't got ringing (ghosting) on anything. I usually print at 250mm/s with a layer height of 0.18mm. Seems to be a magic layer height number. Print at 195°C with bed temp at 62°C. I've been able to print even at high-speed with those settings and not lose layer strength. I use Overture brand filament almost exclusively. PLA+ (professional) or Super PLA+ and PETG is what I typically print with. Super PLA+ is 5x stronger than PETG but prints crazy well and doesn't bone up the printer. I use Amolen for multicolor filaments and their silks. I would recommend for the price.

I own a Neptune 2s and wifi is something Elegoo has struggled with for some time. However the printer isn't the actual problem, their version of Cura is. I struggled for months to get the 2s to play nice over wireless after installing the MKS module. It would work, but it was temper mental and would randomly print out absolute garbage. Then I ordered a Bambu Labs printer and while waiting on it, I decided to get familiar with Bambu studio. While I had to jump through all kinds of silly hurdles with cura, bambu slicer simply recognized the printer, set it up and ran it better by default than cura ever did. So the problem was never the printer and never the wifi chip, it was the slicer and how it communicated. It blows my mind that their own branch of slicer works worse than another manufacturers entirely. I'm still actively printing on the 2s and it's running better than it ever has and I'm getting some solid upgrades printed for it now. Which is good because at this point if Bambu pisses me off anymore, I'm going to refuse delivery of the damned thing when it arrives and just get a refund.

Noise doesn't HAVE to be part of the cost of better cooling, printer manufacturers just need to start using quality fans like Noctua's. That said, a printer using quality fans likely isn't going to be hitting a $300 price point like this one. It would be great if they'd start designing things to allow fan upgrades with minimal effort, though.
