You’re absolutely right, the current format is honestly disgraceful to the anime community; the fact that so many shows have been robbed due to the popularity of Jujutsu Kaisen and demon slayer. There was a point in time where they used to have a group of judges that had usually great decisions for the winners, but ever since probably 2019 everything changed for the worse; it just seemed like all the judges were biased towards Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen even though there were so many shows that actually fit the categories they won way better than them. Like for example: this year best drama shouldn’t have went to Jjk, it should’ve been Vinland Saga because it really was one of the best dramas you could watch in the last decade. Another example we could give is jujutsu Kaisen winning cinematography although I don’t specialize in it, even I can tell that the first half of jujutsu Kaisen season 2 does not deserve it and that it should’ve went to Attack on Titan or even One Piece (which in my opinion, due to its popularity should at least been nominated for anime of the year) . Anyways, I’m glad you decided to cover this topic; it’s a good way to explain to non-addicts how the scoring system works for the crunchyroll anime awards.

voting systems are always tricky. I like the option where a jury preselect and masses can vote like the crunchy awards. I mean, you do produce anime/films/eg for the masses, not for an elite circle. BUT. it is really frustrating when awesome achievements like the song Idol lost against jjk or heavenly delusion didn`t win one single award or vinland Saga was just completely ignored. I mean, c`mon everyone who saw this, even if you are a huge fan of jjk, that is just epic tale saga. welp.

Just make a "Best Shonen" category so it could only win that and probably anime of the year. Jobless been done dirty twice now.

They can increase categories and exclude shonen from some where it does not belong. But voting system is fine ig, Bcz at the end of the day you want people to decide what they like.

In my opinion a big problem which I believe to have played a big role this year was the miscommunication of which seasons were eligible for voting, that being Fall 2022, Winter 2023, Spring 2023 and Summer 2023. JJK fans most likely voted for JJK in alot of categories thinking about the Shibuya Arc even though that was released in Fall 2023 and because of that not eligible for any awards. The Hidden Inventory arc won anime of the year ... next year the Shibuya arc will be eligible and can win again ... and the worst part of this is that Crunchyroll did this intentionally as they categorized Gojo as a side character, Gojo then won in the category "Best Supporting Character" even though he was the main character of the arc. 2023 was dominated by JJK (Hidden Inventory), Demon Slayer (Sword Smith Arc), Chain Saw Man and Attack on Titan (Final Season The Final Chapters Part 1) and in 2024 we will have JJK (Shibuya Arc), Demon Slayer (Hashira Training Arc), Chain Saw Man (Reze Movie) and Attack on Titan (Final Season The Final Chapters Part 2) as eligible nominees. We will have the exact same winners as this years event with only small differences like Frieren maybe winning "Fanatsy" or "Animation".

I was flabbergasted when demon slayer won multiple awards it was a very mid season. I forgot about that season entirely the second I was done with it so I think that all the demon slayer wins prove popularity meaning more than good shows. Jujutsu Kaisen was definetly one of the best shows of the year at least while demon slayer probably wasnt in the top 30

I agree with some stuff you said, but also disagree with other stuff. It would be definitely nice if we could rework it, but I don't think we can find the optimal solution. In the worst case it would become more complicated and people less likely vote. Firstly, it's about your only judge system. Even if you want your judge to watch majority of the shows, you cannot make sure that they actually did. And even if we go with 200 judges, I doubt that you would get a different result. The thing is shounen is popular because it was created as something that appeal to the majority, while a more - let's say - artistic show would only appeal to a smaller group, which makes it less likely to win. Secondly, I don't think we need many more categories. I mean it would be nice, but I doubt that we could use them meaningfully. Let's say we create a Sports or Horror category. "Sadly", there are significantly less horror and sports anime produced than shounen. And I don't think we should force ourselves to give out awards to every show. Like if the best horror anime is worse than the worst nominated fantasy, then it is okay to still give it an award? (On MAL there are 552 horror, 775 sports anime, while 5685 fantasy show. Judges physically won't be able to nominate enough shows.) All in all, it's not simply about celebrating anime, because you want to give the awards to shows that deserve it. And yes, technically possible that a show win multiple awards. The problem lies in when it wins it, but does not deserve it (e.g. JJK won AotY, best director, best character design; KnY won best fantasy etc). I mean I watch like 20-30 anime per season and I wouldn't change a lot of nominations. Or even if I change some stuff, I wouldn't use that many "new" - meaning not yet nominated - titles, but reuse some already nominated ones (e.g. Tengoku Daimakyou). So, what could be the solution? I think the problem is that the other "fanbases" usually get divided. Let's say you are a drama fan and wanted to vote for a drama show in AotY category. Half of them voted for Oshi no Ko and other half probably voted for Vinland Saga. Therefore, I think the best solution would be that the voter needs to rank the nominated shows. The first gets 5 points, second one gets 4 points ... the sixth gets 0 point. Someone who's more interested in deeper shows, would probably rank higher Oshi no Ko, Vinland Saga and Bocchi the Rock. In case of the drama community on average Vinland Saga and Oshi no Ko would get 4.5 points (=(5+4)/2). This is the best I think we could do. And this system would somewhat pressure the voters to at least read about the nominated shows, because he needs to create an order and if he did not see them, it would not be able to rank them.

I think you are wrong about the purpose of what the award show is. You want it to be X but its Y. It is working as Crunchyroll intended. They are going to highlight the profitable anime because they will make more money and give them more hype. Shows like Vinland saga and in my personal opinion skip and loafer not winning is sad, but its the reality. Crunchyroll is going to promote their profitable shows that they have streaming. They aren't going to give the award to something they don't offer as well. It will always be biased lol

A thing you didnt mention is the fact they end at fall 2023 AND IF A ANIME ENDS UP FINISHING AFTERWARDS THATS APPARENTLY NOT COUNTED??? Please please tell me how that makes sense, why tf is jjk in there with only 7 episodes meaning that it will be back with the rest next awards? Why is aot part 1 and 2 not there when PART 2 IS WHAT EVERYONE REMEMBERS FOR 2023?? how does jjk that is only 7 eps not even explained to the voters that chose the anime over full fledged seasons ( vinland… )? And its the fact they keep using the shibuya poster like wth… this part really pisses me off because yes recency bias can be annoying but that doesnt matter if the anime aired in 2023 you put the whole anime in, not 1/3? Its so flawed it makes me not even wanna vote

haha, i didnt know it was called shounen awards by other ppl too XD but hey at least finally a shoujo won!! i totally agree with you with most things. The problem is also btw, that there are not many "non-shounen" shows produced. the ration from shounen/shoujo is huuge, same for seinen/josei. For example last year, the categories of both romance and drama were won by a shounen (romance). even tho those are typically categories predominant in shoujo (same as action tends to be shounen) 5:07 tiny disagreement there. dont make them "watch the vast majoirity" but make all of them watch aloted anime regardless of their taste, so every anime has been watched an equal amount within the jury. 5:37 i think they should do some kind of point system, similar to things like figure skating or so. like a checklist of points that need to be present to get points within a category. and then there can be a subjective checkbox with an 1-10 custom points for overall enjoyment 8:00 I agree with too many categories that are essentially just "tags" or "subgenres" sticking to the main genres is fine. Especially because lots of times demographics (shounen, shoujo, etc) as well as settings (fantasy, historical, scifi,) or gimmicks (mecha, supernatural, etc) are counted as genre... But well generally I also find it kind of unfair for aaaaall the sequels always be there/compared to first seasons. for example: oh yea X anime does not rly have world building and no character developement, while there is only 12EP - comparing to OP imho but yea thats a dilemma I guess, there are not too many non sequel shows nowadays. and everything gets separated into a gazillion seasons
