I’m glad to see people finding ways to live and thrive without spending every cent they make on rent or mortgage...save as much as they can living this way and THEN buy a house...don’t be burdened your whole life with a huge house payment. This is so smart. And having solar power too. Keep it up kids!

Absolutely. Don't be beholden by The Man. Or some stupid overpriced house. Save up every dime you can, wait until the market is near bottom, then buy several. Rent them. Buy more. Rent them. Let others work for you. Then you become The Man. Life goes full circle.

I ended up going with IKEA metal bed supports ($20 Each x4) As they extend And slot into place Bed mattress folds back And you can pull up the supports ether way Front/Rear Or all for moving items. With brackets I think i spent $150 And its a double size bed 400Lbs no problem ...But it was your channel that got me thinking so thanks !

Hi fella, a little tip from someone who lives in UK where rain and damp weather loves rotting vehicles, just squirt some old used engine oil (new oil if you prefer) in the wells of the body panels then it won't matter if there is debris in them as you won't ever have to worry about rust ever again. But if you live in a dry state then ignore this comment. Keep up the good work...

I made the same thing from wood, but used a double bed base. It's lasted 4+ years so far. I use two 6'x2' mattresses and just put one on top of the other when stored collapsed.

I ran out of 4040 like 5 times even though I thought I added up everything before hand. You also spend about as much on fasteners and slidy, bendy parts as you do on aluminum extrusion. It's a great system, already have more bars in my cart.

This is looking great! If i had more money allocated to my van build, the extruded aluminum would have been my choice to build with. Perhaps if I do a remodel later, this is what I could do. I too have thought about a hidden shower setup, near the bed area somewhere. I am still in the planning stages myself but the build has commenced. I will be following your build. Thanks!

Since you have built this in a vehicle which will be subject to the usual bouncing and vibration, I would go back to every single fastener and put a drop of blue Loctite on the theads. I use a lot of 8020 on small machines and without a bit of thread locker, something will come loose. Guaranteed. And, take your allen wrenches with you and whatever small hand tools you assembled this with. At least on your first few outings. One other thing to look out for - sometimes when you tighten a bolt, it will feel like it is tight. In fact, unless it is the right length, it may have bottomed out in the channel before getting truly tight. It's easy to do and the difference between the correct length bolt and one that's too long it usually only 1/8". YMMV.

80/20 is flat out the most amazing product... you can build anything with it ... really only limited by your imagination ... and checkbook... @lorcro2000

The plusnuts have a pullout strength of 500 lbs each or so I believe, and that's straight pulling outwards, probably even stronger for this application where most of the force is vertical. Four of them could withstand 2000 lbs. They are indeed the only way to mount stuff to a van wall. For many things you can even use the pre-drilled holes that already are in the van ribs so you need to do minimal work on holes and the like. Great to see some 8020 linear bearings in use in a van, too, t-slot is such an incredible material to construct van guts out of. Strong, rust free, moisture impervious and 100% squared off and true if you just measure your cuts right. I like what you're doing here. Also great to see how very little that first beam bends with your full body weight on it, my plan is also to build a bed out of this stuff but I wasn't sure off hand what kind of weights it could support. Clearly a framework of this will easily support even two big people if need be.

This would definitely be possible to design into the system! With my van, however, there are some constraints that prevent this design. The biggest one being the upper cabinets. More details coming in the follow up video!

Seven O'Savage You could cut the 2 prices of mattresses at a 45deg overlap so that the section sliding in slides underneath the section in the back. C class motorhomes have that system for the above cab bunk. Because your van is narrower at the top, flipping the mattress may cause the corners to catch the sides. Did you say you had cabinets above?
@martinblumrich8296
@martinblumrich8296 4 жыл бұрын
Or... make a three piece bed that has two "folds" in it. The last one stays were it is, the middle one becomes the back rest (complete with shoulder seat belts on each side of the van) and the front part lowers to the bottom of the back rest to become two more seats with seatbelts. That's my design hope, and I came here because of an "extrusion van bed" search. Cheers!

Just an opinion from a seasoned mechanic... you will need cross bracing at the lateral supports on the slide out and this, in my opinion, is a waste of space. Just use traditional rear seat from conversion van that folds into a bed. But hey, good on you for thinking it out and building it. Hope you get allot of great use. God Bless you and keep truckin'. people used to crawl out of the hills of the southern states and camp for 2 years at the campgrounds to save a downpayment for a house, then they shortened the stay at campgrounds to 2 weeks in the 80's then they increased all the prices, and ruined camping.....Living in a vehicle was a great idea I thought until I found out men, even cops think it's prostitutes doing it and hope to get some...they got the right to wake you up from a sleep so it takes a lot of thought and planning....For this bed frame, it's like having a partial roll cage...keep building more of the roll cage...I see these van's crashed all the time and they could use reinforcements.....Love it....
