Birds of Prey movie commentary
Birds of Prey was heavily criticised when it was released but we had a great time making this movie commentary for it. It's a fun movie, well acted with great action and plenty of aesthetic choices. We honestly can't wait for another Harley Quinn movie, whether it's with the Birds of Prey or not!

I don't know why people hate this movie, mostly KZfaqrs like Mr. H, who despised the film with it's strong overtones of female empowerment and it was released during the Pandemic, which is the reason why it got all the hate. I give this movie 7.5/10.

I’m a feminist and I didn’t like the movie at all. It’s not the empowerment part. I can’t really put my finger on what’s wrong with this movie, but it’s almost like it was filmed in a hurry and lot of its aspects feel...sloppy? It doesn’t have a soul, it reads as a movie which creators didn’t really care for and just wanted to check a bunch of boxes that they had in mind before filming it? Again I don’t really know how to explain it, but it gives off the same vibe that euphoria season two has😂 It’s like when you know that you didn’t like what you just watched but you can’t really explain WHY you didn’t like it
@Whatbookie
@Whatbookie 2 жыл бұрын
@@heyysophie9928 the reason it feels “sloppy” is because it’s fast pace to match Harley that why the tone was slightly different with each character. Harley was the main one and the one telling this story meaning it’s going to bounce around and be out of order because that’s her character! Another example would be the Deadpool movies

I think the movie is solid. I did have an ex who dragged me to opening night of suicide squad. But he for some reason kept refusing to go see Birds of Prey even when it was in the discount theatre. And if we ever came across a male friend of his who had seen it they'd share this kind of look and calling 'one of those kinds of movies' and pretend like I'm not standing right next to them. One of the first movies I saw when I became single and it really did empower me more than if I saw it with him and also made me realize how many red flags were ignored. I'm not saying it's the perfect movie but it's pretty solid and I enjoy Harley here more than in SS

Also my favorite part of Harley being basically an unreliable narrator is in my therapy sessions I'll tell a story and then be like 'okay wait I need to give you Context' and the. Speaking of The Batman, I caught myself thinking how realistic some of the fight scenes were and how that made me bored. I'm probably in the minority here, but I really am not looking for much realism (fighting wise) when I watch a comic book movie, or a kids action movie, or even a dramedy.

It's sad this movie got a lot of hate, it's just a fun movie honestly. there's also details that's a bit hard to miss sometimes, like how each birds of prey member (and harley) had different fighting techniques: harley was more into weapons and gymnast-y movements, renee montoya was more into punching, black canary was more of a kick-type/kicking movements, and huntress (aside from the crossbow) had a takedown sort of technique. i'm glad you guys did this reaction, this movie deserved a lot of love and it's one of my favorites and the soundtrack is just awesome.

Referring to 15:30 with the bean bags and confetti guns. If you think of it, it could potentially be a blending of reality with Harleys reality. Kinda like what is seen in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad in her big killing scene where in the beginning it is bloody and such but then it becomes flowers and glitter. So if you take that idea and apply it here while its shown as glitter/smoke/beanbags/etc. it could actually be very bloody but we are seeing it through Harleys POV.

Yesss I was hoping you'd react to this someday! Birds of Prey was way better than people give it credit for, not perfect but it's also a superhero movie and sometimes I just wanna have fun and watch women be awesome for 2 hours. I really hope the overwhelming negative reception won't hinder studios greenlighting more movies like this for the future, and when handling female characters I hope they get more female directors and costume designers so stuff like this won't be one in a million. Also regarding the costumes, seeing DC fanboys complain the women weren't "hot" in this movie because they actually had clothes on and in Margot Robbie's case, feeling comfortable in what she's wearing this time around, was so funny and unfortunately really telling as a woman into superhero movies. Those kind of men sure are... something

Birds of Prey (2020) REALLY got disrespected when it was released. 'Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey' should've been the name of the film. This would've been a great springboard for a 'Birds of Prey' film without Ms. Quinn and 'The Suicide Squad' (2021).

I feel like there was a lot more to its underperformance than its confusing title (and ironically, Warner Bros. desperately switched the title after opening weekend because of the low opening weekend, hoping to earn better results, but it didn’t). The marketing was half-assed, the R rating, bad word of mouth from the first Suicide Squad, and its review embargo was lifted the day before its debut, even though reviews weren't all that bad.

I love Birds of Prey! It's so welcoming! I loved that they don't wear costumes, they wear fashion - it's so appealing! I'm a geek about narrative structures, and this film did everything I want a good story to do, while being super fun. The non-linear storytelling was used very effectively. And I stayed engaged during the action scenes which I usually zone out for. I loved that the physics of the fights looked real (not cg, and impacts hurt), how the camera stayed put without cutting a million times, and how Harley used props like Jackie Chan. I'm not usually into villain stories (good vs evil), but Roman Sionis was such a fun baddie, I loved every second of Ewan hamming it up, and I love a good 2IC like Victor Zsasz. I assumed most of the "critique" was bad faith misogyny and racism, with a dash of purism like the Cassandra Cain name being used for a different character (fair enough). I have no problem with the movie name, it's about an ensemble cast, and gets a zany extended title because it's Harley's unreliable narrator. Overall, a super refreshing and inviting film; loved the characters, the style and the comedy 💛🌙🌟✨

I know nothing of the comics but I think the reason black canary only used her voice that one time was because she was too traumatized to use her powers after her mother passed away and maybe she passed out afterwards because it’s just been so long since she used so much of her powers to that extent. Also the movie did pretty decent the budget was 80 million to 100 million and they got 200 million in the box office.

With no personal attachment to the original canons of the comic characters this was definitely something that was still both coherent and enjoyable but I can also understand why that mixing would feel frustrating too. Even so, a real fun time! Also, thanks for opening up with us about your names/name pronunciations. My last name has similar issues with people pronouncing it correctly and even beyond that I do have friends with similar issues that go by nicknames for the same reasons you two do so I totally get it. No clue if you're taking reccs right now BUT I would love to recommend 'Drop Dead Gorgeous' - it's got an all star cast (Amy Adams' first ever role, Kirsten Dunst, Alison Janney, Brittany Murphy, Kirstie Alley - and I think you might like the humor.

I loved that it was Helena, in that final fight scene, who told Cass she didn't "need to see this" and thought about her. Makes a lot of sense for her to be the one to think of that, with what she went through when she was maybe only a little younger. I love this take on Black Canary, it's similar enough, but I agree with your point on Cass. I wish they had gone with Harper instead - she'd fit wayyy better in this kind of story. The actress did a great job with the role that was given to her, though, and I am excited to see what comes of this group in the future! (If anything!)

I loved this movie when it came out (saw it several times before Covid closed the theaters, even with my dislike of how Cass Cain was handled), but I've hesitated to watch any commentaries due to how many misogynists were offended by sexual & gendered violence not being **sexualized**. The idea that there might be a women's power-fantasy movie where the threat is sexism, where the heroines are united by that common struggle despite their differences, was mocked as something ridiculous. Honestly, I can't tell if the issue was that BoP acknowledged sexual violence against women or that it celebrated women not just fighting back but winning. A similar issue came up with the most recent Predator movie, Prey. I don't know if you have watched that, but definitely female centered, and one that was review bombed by people angry both at the idea of a woman-led Predator film and at the idea that Indigenous people would be able to fight back with "primitive technology." I saw many reviews of people who said they wished it was the first Predator movie where the lead died -- which felt particularly... hateful given that us Native women are ten times more likely to be murdered than women of any other ethnicity in the US. Whatever. Sorry for rambling, though not sure anyone will read this haha. I'm glad I watched this commentary given how negative others have been. I appreciate it & will subscribe and watch other videos.

This might be the only DC universe film I like as of late (other than the new batman). I really enjoyed everything about it and it really redeemed Harley's character from the OG Suicide Squad (which was obviously horrendous). They also utilize the female gaze well in it and I appreciate that. The audience looks to Harley as a strong, leading woman rather than a sexual object (like in suicide squad). It's just better and I love it.

Honestly, this and Shazam for me were two very distinctly fun movies in the DCEU. The rest are just very grimdark and boring when comics are supposed to be enjoyable at least if not fun. The way they used fight scenes in this movie, plus using Margot's I Tonya training to make Harley super badass in aerobic fighting is amazing!

Honestly this was such a well made film. It was bonkers, like a Harley Quinn movies is suppose to be. I think just a lot of white dude DB super fans that wouldn’t mind the lack of 100 percent authenticity when it’s crap material like justice league, or bad acting, bad dialogue, and bad fight sequences like Aquaman, versus something crazy fun like this film with strong women directed by a female director. They were just looking for ways to s*** on this film which is honestly like three times better the most of the DC movies that came out the last ten years.
