Join Adam, one of our expert audiologists at Alto Hearing, as we delve into the controversial topic of ear candles and their increasing popularity despite a glaring lack of scientific evidence. In this comprehensive episode from our Lutterworth clinic, we not only debunk myths surrounding ear candles but also showcase real earwax removal procedures, including a challenging case exacerbated by the use of Ear Candles (sometimes referred incorrectly to as Hopi Ear Candles).
*What’s Inside*:
The Ear Candle Controversy: Adam discusses why ear candles are not only ineffective but potentially dangerous, breaking down the misconceptions with a no-holds-barred approach.
Real Cases, Real Solutions: Witness the complexity of removing earwax compounded by ear candle residue, and the professional techniques used to resolve these issues.
A Return Visit: Catch up with a previous patient dealing with psoriasis in the ear, and see the progress made since their last session.
Expert Advice: Understand why evidence-based healthcare should be the cornerstone of any treatment and why alternative therapies need a critical examination.
Why Watch? This episode is a must-watch for anyone considering ear candles as a solution for earwax or sinus pressure. Gain insights from the front lines of audiology and make informed decisions about your ear health.

@@SezArrow I feared you might have lost your hearing. I guess the vertigo is because of some middle ear sensitivity. Sorry to hear about that, but I'm glad you've mostly recovered. I have a chronic history of ear problems. Many seem to related to pressure imbalance. "Popping" my ears almost never helps and often causes more discomfort. I was told about ear candles and eventually tried them. To my surprise they seemed to provide relief but I was not happy about hot wax and flame being that close to my head. When I burned one while not in an ear, I saw that a small stream of smoke poured down the tube. This smoke was warm. I thought about how a hot shower will help sometimes (always avoiding water in my ears of course). So I tried putting a heating pad over my ears and face (reasoning that my chronic sinus issues are related to my ear problems) and that actually helped enough that nasal irrigation and decongested actually helped. So, long story short, I think if ear candles have any benefit, it is because of the heating of the ear canal.

As someone who suffered from ear problems all my life, it was my dad who first tried the ear candle on me. I can honestly tell you the thought of the idea scared me, but I was also a child at the time when it occurred. The warmness is what helped relieved my pain, also has the same effect as the heating pad does. I did not let the ear candle become a way of treating my pain, I used the heating pad a lot, that and my ENT doctor put 5 sets of tubes in each ear and cut and scraped the bone of my left ear. Thank you for the video, I always wondered if they truly made the ear worse and what the inside looked like after it was done burning.

The Hopi Tribe have publicly denied the creation and use of ear candling in their tribe. They also have publicly said they are unsafe to use and quite dangerous. So they don't recommend people use them. For myself, I had never even heard them being called a "Hopi ear candle" until I started watching wax removal videos from the UK. Before UK joined the KZfaq content creation the only wax removals you could find on KZfaq came mostly from Asian creators, and is done in a very different way. Which I still enjoy watching. As well as Indian barbers who do a very similar wax removal as the Asians do in India. I still watch those as well. So I did my own research and found that ear candling dates back to being much older than the Hopi Tribe. I found possible creation in China, Greece, Egypt, and Japan. But couldn't find who actually created the ear candle first. Would love to see someone put in the work and find out who really created the ear candle if possible. However, I also want to mention that in America it's just called an ear candle... and although it's up to an individual to call it what they want. ~ I call it trash. Lol ~ But I certainly would not call it "Hopi". My own heritage is a mix of Shawnee and Osage from my dad, and German (Jew) from my mom. So I do feel a comradery with the other Native Nations. Whether they did or did not create it, we should still refrain from calling them "Hopi" candles. Since a Hopi candle is something different (an actual candle). I think anyone could agree that it's not necessary to attach a name to something until knowing it belongs to that culture 100% or not.

You can buy cameras off amazon to look inside your ears - these are actually really good for observing, but I would advise actually trying to remove wax with any picks they might come with as you may risk doing some damage (something we see regularly!)...

I suspect the oils infused in the candle is why it made my ears feel better and because the oils aren't "wet", but gaseous form, it was nicer in my ear. Whenever I had an ear ache would use ear candles. After a certain incident with an ear candle with a large flame, I stopped having ear problems and my ears stopped being a wax factory. My theory is that I was a chronic dry ear sufferer and the oils in the candle moisturised my ears.

I was confused when you called them Hopi Ear Candles since the Hopi tribe does not and has never used these. A quick bit of research pulled up its been addressed before. From NOW magazine "coning '"is not and has never been a practice conducted by the Hopi tribe or the Hopi people,"' according to public relations officer Vanessa Charles. End of story." The Tribe has requested the manufacturer to stop using their name for these candles. As is typical, they were ignored. I read now in the description you included some information. This just brings more context for those who want to know. I just hate it when a Native American tribe is used to add validity to a fake medicine.

@elisabethivey5615 I'm trying to understand how being a US American is relevant here. They are frequently referred to as "Hopi" ear candles in the US as well. Perhaps you hoping to bring to everyone's attention that for more than a decade the Hopi tribe has repeatedly requested that people stop using the name of the tribe in association with the candles. Interestingly, there are several websites that say that ear candleing was likely developed by the Greeks, but explain the "Hopi" in the name by saying that while the practice originated in Greece, the Hopi tribe introduced the practice to Western cultures. Which is interesting given that ancient Greece provided the foundation of Western culture. But sure -- the Hopi traveled to Greece, brought it back to the Americas, then reintroduced the practice to European settlers... that makes sense???

People who use ear candles seem to be so extreme that they take great offense to anyone who talks them down. You can light it and leave it on the table and once you open it up its going to be filled with wax.

I 100% agree with you. My husband on the other hand, thinks the stuff he finds in the candle is his ear wax. It definitely looks like it could be, but in order to pull that out, the pressure would be unbearable. I had a little in mine when I tried. I knew what was going to happen. What is the stuff found in the candle

Unfortunately not, people have been hurt far more by these things but they're never banned. Unless a huge number of people are badly injured, nothing will change. That's why things like homeopathy still exists; there's a load of money to be made from people who mistrust science & medicine, who can be persuaded to buy things that are "natural" despite this term being completely meaningless. Natural = better because it feels like it should be, when in reality it just means something is unproven or has something to do with plants. Like Dara O'Briain once said, we took the plants that worked and turned them into medicine - whatever is left over is a nice bowl of soup and some pot pourii.

I have never even heard of ear candles but I guess that's because if we have a problem with our ears we can just go to a nose, ear and throat specialist and don't have to worry about the cost because we don't pay for medical help and that is the sad thing, that people wouldn't have to try things that are dangerous if they had such options. I'm pretty sure though that if I only had the option to use a candle I would save up for real help like yours. After watching this I almost wish I did have ear wax just to try this, it must be a great relief to get that out!!

My mom believes in these ear candling candles, no matter how many times I tell her they don't actually work. I can see the reasoning behind them, with the warm smoke going down the candle and into the ear, melting the ear wax, however, most people with ear wax problems have more than just ear wax that is causing the problems, it's ear wax and dead skin, which wouldn't come out with these candles. Maybe if your only problem is actual ear wax... but even then, the dangers of using them outweigh any possible benefit.
@altohear
@altohear 6 ай бұрын
Earwax isn’t wax in the traditional sense. It’s a mixture of dead skin and secretions from the ear. It can’t be melted - most of the time the body manages to get rid of it perfectly fine by itself.

I use them but not when I'm having a hearing issue. My ears over produce wax and where the fluid is supposed to drain is squared off. It should be rounded. I do have drainage issues and when the fluid hits that squared off spot, it goes back in. It's not a cure but it does help occasionally with the taking the itchy feeling away when the allergies are higher. I haven't used them in a while. It's really once in a great while use.

I thought 'candling' was done with a cone shaped funnel and a regular candle, you basically funneled heat into your affected ear so the heat would soften the wax, or ease an infection. 🤔

I came back from a surfing weekend and felt off, unbalanced and with muffled hearing. I saw a GP at a clinic who used an ear candle to remove a ton of ear wax that had clogged my ear from the salt water waves. I can say with 100% confidence that it worked wonderfully for me. I immediately felt much better. This is my evidence.

As someone who has had lifelong ear challenges, I prefer when the clinician irrigates my ear gently but effectively. Also, I trust their judgement. If they’re comfortable with that, that’s what they do. If they prefer the Zoellner tube, then that’s what I want them to use. Hasn’t steered me wrong yet.

My family has used ear candling whenever we were sick with ear infection. We didn't use store bought ear candles, we used newspaper and made a cone to stick it in the ear. We never did use it on hard earwax, but when we had infection and our ears were dripping or had a lot of soft wax (still not when fully blocked bc obviously it's gonna push it back). I *do* believe it works, when we open up the newspaper we can see earwax on it, and some pressure in our ear *feels* less. Albeit I never tested and checked the newspaper without putting it in the ear, but I do believe it still works if u have more soft wax or to remove all that pus from ear infections

I remember the first time I needed to get my ears syringed, i had what the nurse described as wax plugs in both ears, she chucked them down the sink as soon as they were out so i never got a look at them, they must've been huge though cause as soon as they were cleared I realised that I had been shouting very loudly at people for months, it was no wonder I was getting the side eye from everyone I met, I was shocked at how much it had affected my hearing and I didn't even know, i sorta got used to it. Mad

We use olive oil occasionally, more often sodium bicarbonate. We use irrigation when considered safe to do so. Olive oil in this case wouldn’t have done anything to help.

My mother was very much into ear candling. I let her try one on me once and was skeptical about the amount of wax within afterwards. I keep my ears pretty clean but not excessively so. So I told her we should just burn one on it's own. Unsurprisingly, it was the same amount of wax. She had no explanation or argument yet continued to use them likely due to placebo effects. Aside from the damage you could potentially do to the inner ear, these things are a scam.

i’ve seen tons of videos where they candle an ear & just light one by itself… every time the same amount of gunk is in them at the end & the ear is the same … or worse. they DO NOT work, they are a waste!!! our ears are fragile & tiny, connected to our brains!! please see a medical professional, not high street. i’m in the states & even i’ve heard the damage that place has caused hundreds of, maybe thousands in the UK.
