This is How Narcissists Learn to Control Others | Narcissism | NPD
Narcissists often develop their manipulative behaviors from the toxic environments they were exposed to during their upbringing. This process typically starts within the family, where the individual might have witnessed or been subjected to harmful interactions and relationships. For example, if a child grows up in a family where one or more members use the silent treatment as a form of punishment, display emotional coldness, lie frequently, or manipulate others to get their way, the child is likely to learn and internalize these behaviors as normal or effective ways to interact with others.
In such a family setting, a narcissist may observe that manipulation is a tool for control and dominance. They might see a parent or sibling successfully using deceit or emotional withdrawal to get what they want or to maintain power over others. Over time, these behaviors become ingrained as they learn to mimic them to achieve similar outcomes. The child learns that lying can help avoid punishment, that emotional coldness can be a way to protect oneself or hurt others, and that manipulating situations and people can provide a sense of control and superiority.
The toxic influence doesn't end with family. Narcissists can also learn manipulative behaviors from their wider social environment, including friends and peers. If a person frequently associates with individuals who engage in deceitful, manipulative, or unethical behavior, they are likely to adopt similar tactics. For instance, if their friends regularly use flattery to get what they want, employ deceit to gain advantages, or manipulate situations to their benefit, a narcissist will see these actions as effective strategies and incorporate them into their own behavior repertoire.
The proverb "birds of a feather flock together" aptly describes how narcissists often surround themselves with like-minded individuals who reinforce their manipulative tendencies. Being in a social circle that normalizes and rewards manipulative behavior can further entrench these tactics as acceptable and even desirable. The mutual validation within these groups can make it difficult for a narcissist to recognize the harm their behaviors cause or to seek change.
Understanding where a narcissist learns their manipulation tactics requires a close look at their background and the influences they were exposed to during their formative years. The family dynamics, interactions with peers, and overall environment play crucial roles in shaping their approach to relationships and interactions. By analyzing these factors, one can gain deeper insights into the development of their manipulative behaviors and the reinforcement of these tactics over time. This context helps to explain why they resort to such strategies and why they might find it challenging to change their behavior, as it has become an integral part of their identity and way of relating to the world.
