This vehicle had a bad droning when decelerating, which was diagnosed as the regenerative braking system.
This is all built into the reduction gear on the side of the traction motor. ( a bit like a combustion engine with the gear box on the side).
Little more detail regeneration braking is when a hybrid or electric vehicle is driven and when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator and coasts/rolls and brakes the reduction gear converts that into electric energy and deposits it back into the battery.

My 2020 Kona Electric Ultimate with 29000 miles is in the shop right now for this. I am renting a 2023 Kona Electric with 3500 miles. Same generation car. Only sound heard is faint tire noise and VESS. The difference is striking. The sound this problem is making actually occurs all the time it is just louder at certain times like in regen to a stop.

2019-2020 Kona EV and perhaps Kia Niro as well, premature motor and gear transfer bearing wear. Also reduction gear case premature wear due to oil contamination.

There is a TSB for this for both the Kona and the Niro. The gear reduction unit and the motor needs replacement.

so the tsb states to test both which we did, as i work for hyundai.. in this case only the traction motor was at fault, although newer models like the ioniq 5 and 6 the traction motor and reduction gear are all one unit and cant be separated which would require a whole unit

We remove the whole motor and reduction gear all at once. Separate them and test them individually

I’ve got these symptoms on an Ioniq. Dealer has bad hearing apparently.

I don't want to get involved, but you could have shown a test before the repair to see how noisy it was.

But the part in the video where I’m spinning the traction motor with the drill is the noise. Only way to show it

Gas cars have ENGINES, electric cars use MOTORS. Just sayin, first people would erroneously call engines motors and now motors engines...whatever.

Engine - a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion, motor or engine is the correct terminology

To date, this "shocking" problem has left nobody stranded anywhere at any time. It is for the most part just an annoying faint noise which is barely noticeable if you listen for it. It doesn't affect how the car drives, feels or accelerates or cruises, just a faint little noise at low speeds but IT IS annoying for a fairly new car. A little normal "engine" noise and exhaust drone like a gas car would surely drown it out of existence. HA!!

The fact your taking it way out of context is insane. I’ve worked on a few and this wasn’t a faint noise it was a constant drum. Worse than a wheel bearing. But hey your the technician right 👍🏻 please keep comments on one post please
