Matrimelee is awesome! If you attempt a throw near the referee he’ll roll forward into the fighting plain and you can use him as a projectile. There’s an input combo on the player select screen to unlock 5 hidden guest characters from Rage of the dragons too. The last boss is an input reading nightmare. Once she gets that first hit on you, the round is basically over but she can be beat. Just wait for her to rush you with her foot saw kicking move then roll behind her and crouch kick her in the back. She’ll continue to spam that move if you’re successful. Repeat until shes out of health or time her out. Cheap tactics for a cheap boss

I am LOLing at the angels in the background - they cheer if you're in the life lead and they're fizzing out when you're almost KO'ed. This + the mini game + THAT DID MAD DAMAGE - Justin you gotta give me a break to breath while laughing

The moment I saw the boss at 5:50, my brain went, "oh, that's just straight up Ingrid, isn't it?" Then, right as I finished processing that thought, my boy Justin just yells, "is that Ingrid!?" The timing of that was so perfect it was almost scary.

Final boss is a pain! I find double jumping behind her after she sets up traps is the easiest way to open her up. There's also a PS2 port of Matrimelee with an alternate boss.

I know EXACTLY what you're dealing with, Justin. My friend and I once spent five hours on this boss. We finally gave up at 3 a.m. I'm a lot better at these games now, than I was then. Aww people should have told Justin to play the Japanese version of the game. The game has amazing vocal songs that play in the stages that the global versions removed.

I think any time you design a fighting game boss, you should ask yourself, "would one of the greatest players in the world struggle to beat this?" If the answer is 'yes', you probably overdid it.

I remember beating this one back in the day. Like somebody else said, double jumping, specially the genie, and attacking from behind, is key.

There's other upgraded versions you should try to hunt down. But uh, don't forget, you can power-up some of your specials and a few normals by running (they'll act like EX moves). You can call the referee into the fight with B+C (IIRC, game tells you this during the info screen upon credit start). You can use the bum as a human shield or throw him at the opponent. Weirdly, you could also do a clashing minigame if both characters taunted each other (match the buttons that appear on the screen and whoever screes up first is at disadvantage to be hit). That said, the later games after this got rid of the referee and "Bloodline Battle" mechanic.

There's so much more into this game, There's an old lady who throws her dentures at you as a fireball, Annie's stage is the one where a lady plays the song "the little things that make me happy" which is about a woman who is obsessed with food in the most ridiculous way, when you fight hikaru her stage is the concert and they play a silly alien song and ufos fly around which is why the aliens are dancing around in the concert stage. Elias is a priest who looks like ozzy osbourne and who's fighting pose makes him look like he's playing the guitar. Kintaro kokuin isn't featured in this game but he's a little boy who appears in other power instinct games, he wears very little clothing and when he's knocked on the floor his genit@ls are exposed

Groove On Fight is the fourth game (the third was a 2 vs 2 pseudo-update/sequel of Power Instinct 2) and it is like the Garou: Mark of the Wolves of the Power Instinct series; it takes place in the future, it's more serious, and the roster is almost completely different along with the art direction. It also makes direct references and connections to the Shin Megami Tensei series - no joke. Matrimelee, the fifth game, goes back chronologically to taking place right after #2, making it a direct sequel to that game. It was also made by a different studio; the same people that made the Double Dragon fighting game, Rage of the Dragons. They made one (or two, depending on whom you ask) more Power Instinct game, which was a sequel to Matrimelee and was released only in Japan.

Sissy has an exploit. If you keep rolling and doing a hard punch, she’ll take the bait. She’ll break the exploit, once she gets the combo breaker with a special. So you have to bait her in again. Other than that, she’s extremely hard to beat.

So. I bought a neo geo arcade cabinet years ago and it came with matrimelee. The problem is that it's on default 8 difficulty (the hardest) and I'm too proud to turn down the difficulty against cheesy imput reading quarter gobbling bosses so watching manage to get an ending is truly satisfying. Also you should treat yourself and checkout kizuna encounter.

Only one more Power Instinct game left to prove. I hope, next time, you get to play with the japanese soundtrack enabled :)
