As a coach I have been extremely impressed with the vast majority of your videos and the simplicity and directness of your approach. I also agree with a good deal of what you are saying here, but it is less clear than your usual standards. What you are correctly objecting to is dropping the trail shoulder. I agree and for the reasons you identify. However, it would be helpful to distinguish between 'dropping' the trail (right side for right handed golfers) 'tilting' and 'side bending' These are all different. Dropping is just lowering; tilting is bending from the hip joint basically; in contrast side bending is a rib cage movement. We want right side bend; we don't want tilting and we don't want dropping. Be clearer from the outset is my only recommendation. and explain the difference among the three. I too prefer right side bend to occur as we approach impact, but there is nothing in side bend correctly understood that will prevent rotation; and so there really is nothing dramatically wrong -- even if it is not ideal -- with right side bend earlier in transition... I agree that we can think of side bend as a consequence of extension of the other side of the body -- both in the backswing and the downswing, but most of us are inclined to teach rotation in the backswing as involving left side bend and not as a consequence of right side extension; the former is the origin of movement, not the consequence. The reason we prefer right side bend late and as a result of left side extension is that were we to start with right side bend in transition or early in the downswing we can't guarantee that we will be left side extension as a consequence of it and we want that to complete a full rotation in balance, and also because we want to keep the left shoulder down early in the transition in conjunction with putting pressure into the ground on the left side. So in short, we want side bend, not tilting or dropping. While we may want it early in the backswing as an initiating movement, we don't want it early in the downswing -- though it is not a tragic mistake (as dropping or tilting are) -- because we (1) want to make sure we keep the front shoulder and hip both down and no closer nor farther apart from one another to start the downswing as part of controlling low point and ball then divot contact and (2) we want to make sure we extend the left side for purposes of completing rotation and creating a bracing move ( which will give us right side bend as a consequence), whereas if we start the downswing with right side bend there is no guarantee that we would get bracing, extension or rotation for free. At least that's how I would explain it.

Wow. Unbelievably enlightening light bulb moment for me (the notion of rotating without trying by using bends). Never heard it till you demonstrated it. So grateful for you. Thank you thank you!

I got an iron fitting recently on track man. when it was over we were going over the numbers. I saw that my path was 15 degrees to the right. when I asked the fitter about it he said it was because I have excessive right side bend at the start of the downswing. I do suffer from lower back pain

You’re exactly spot on correct. They don’t show the angles that exposes this flaw. Rotation against a firm left side. As my left pocket (side) clears my arms drop (no over the top) and “chase” my perpetual left pocket. My finish is facing the fairway and around my body. My sole swing thought is “chase the rabbit.”

I should send this video to my current coach. He has been forcing me to side bend first and lower that right shoulder. My swing has turned into a hot mess over last month and I have repeatedly said to him that I feel like I can’t rotate. He told me to not worry about that. This makes complete sense. I so much time wasted on the wrong process

Please answer me one question. When you shift to the left your whole body goes with the shift thus getting ahead of the ball ( lunge). Sooooooo many youtube videos do the same. Yet, when watching pro's their head and mass stay relatively centred. Even with an iron. You can't find a video on KZfaq about "how to shift left without taking the whole body with you

I like what you are teaching here. But I would also love to see golf instructors who teach your method (body rotational swing) and golf instructors like Mike Bender who basically, from what I can see, primarily teaches exactly what you demonstrated in the beginning of the video with the head behind the ball with forward shaft lean being done by the hands, duke it out in a debate and argue why their method works best. I understand there are many ways to do it.

I just realised I was doing this because I was trying to improve my chipping (I am terrible at chipping) which was often thin. Would be good to show a chipping video which highlights this could be a big reason why you sux at chipping. Also some drills on this and how to fix the mental scars from years of poor chipping due to this. Yes I still sux at chipping but slowly on the mend.

Definitely don’t be side bending when you’re chipping!
@rollorescue1582
@rollorescue1582 2 жыл бұрын
For what it's worth, chipping should involve far less movement and is much more about tempo, arms, and hands. Also, my mantra is always be accelerating through the ball. Soft backswing and faster (not fast) follow through. Also, no shaft lean, it should be very very slightly forward (like a fingers width) so that the the blade of the wedge won't dig in and the bounce of the sole is able to do it's work.

I am impressed how full swing flaws bleed into short game skills, as it is same swing flaw! Quick, out of top full swing? Likely quick, poor tempo chips & pitches.

It's hard for me to keep the chest passive while the lower body rotates. Do you have any thoughts that might help with this? Whenever I try to rotate the lower body with the weight shift, everything seems to come with it and I get steep / over the top. Thanks!

Forward bend makes the head move down so much - perhaps too much head movement?

It moves down a lot during the drill because it’s a drill. Also watch the best ball strikers, they all move down with their head in transition due to forward bending.

All of this could be taken care of if you just said you need a negative attack angle to which you hit the ball first doing that will give you the shaft lean that you're looking for with your irons.
@jchowngolf
@jchowngolf 2 жыл бұрын
More to hit than just trying to hit down. All about how the body moves, which will create a negative angle attack. You can also hit down without shaft lead, hitting down doesn’t produce it.
