You can calculate the print runs based on the pack odds of serial numbered cards. From a simple standpoint, if there is a 20 card set inserted at 1:10 packs and numbered out of 100, the number of packs produced are 20x100x10 = 20,000. You can then use that number to figure out how many base sets there are. People used this and started noticing drastically increasing print runs around 2016. For a quick estimate, look how different the insertion ratios of Topps Gold cards are between 2014 and now. They're basically numbered to the same #, but much harder to pull now. The manufacturers responded a few ways: Topps started producing lots of different types of products. So you could have blaster boxes, hanger packs, different hobby products all from the same set and it makes the calculations more complicated (you can still do it, and the numbers from the last five years have been skyrocketing). Panini stopped printing odds altogether, which used to be required by law, but I guess they found some way around it. Serial #'d cards don't really get around this. Another trick the manufacturers used was creating more and more parallel sets (compare Topps chrome colors in the early 2010s to now). That allowed them to insert parallels at similar pack odds, but print way more base cards. So yes an orange shimmer is numbered to 25, but it might be one of thousands of serial #'d versions of that card. Bottom line the manufacturers are going to capitalize on increased demand by overprinting, they're just finding smarter ways to do it now than in the junk wax era. For long term, stick with very rare cards and autos (players will only sign so many).

These are some of the reasons why I like being a collector. I don't have to try and time things as far as trends or someone just scored 40 in a playoff game, gotta dump him. The new product is overprinted and overpriced. I'm only focused now on getting Kobe insert cards. I have tons of rookies and sealed boxes I can trade to get his stuff. There is also the issue of wildly inaccurate pop reports of rare cards. For example 30 PSA graded versions of a card which was serial numbered to 25. Maybe scanning technologies will solve this....
@commandosolo193
@commandosolo193 3 жыл бұрын
for topps if it says 04/250 that means there are 250 of that card produced and that is the fourth card. the other real issue for baseball is that PSA is estimated between 4-10 million (i know big range) of cards in their backlogs. That doesn't include the higher tiers. They estimated that it's about a year or two to get those through the system. So really there isn't a way of estimating how many baseball cards are out there still waiting. Plus Topps loves to keep on pushing out boxes. It's a zero sum game now. Get what you can for the flip and do the best you can.

The problem with most people who want to flip is they want 3x profits, not 25%. It's much easier to flip cards if you have a more realistic profit target. This is why you see a lot of the best flippers focus on high end cards. 25% profit on a $10K card is nice. With a little time and hustle, you'd find that you can buy collections/large lots at 60-70% of comps and sell them at market individually close to 90-100%.
@TheComebackCardInvestor
@TheComebackCardInvestor 3 жыл бұрын
Great point, Garrett. The 2-3x margins may be a thing of the past. At the same time, spending 8k on a piece of cardboard that can drop to $3k scares the hell out of me lol
@scotpederson5932
@scotpederson5932 3 жыл бұрын
I hope to get to that level 1 day of high end cards. A lot more room to buy at a lower % because when you get in the hundreds or thousands of $ many people are thinking less about % and more about how much Total $ they can get now because they are behind on bills. The sub $100 market is much tougher to get the higher % returns because whether they sell a card or lot for 60.00 vs 90.00 either way is not going to pay off a bunch of bills.
@puntpassclick
@puntpassclick 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheComebackCardInvestor Yes, but then you must also feel the same about investing 10's of thousands of dollars into companies that you do not control ;) Any secondary or grey market success will always be about what you bought at and the best way to ensure you protect your downside; hence my advice to look to buy collections, vs one at a times. People understand volume discounting and it just works as a strategy on the buy side if you have a bit of patience to develop a little lead flow for deals. In general though, we can't call this card investing in one breathe and then in the next be fearful of blue chips due to their per share cost if one is looking to make money in the short (or even long term).
