You pay your taxes every year. Why shouldn’t the wealthy?
Well, Republicans are making it easier for the rich to cheat while making it harder for you to get your taxes done, and slower to get your refund. Let me explain.

I do lots of tax returns for 'rich' people...say, over $500,000 per year. Plenty of them pay between 30% to 40% of their income to the Feds every year. (And that's not counting what they pay to a real rip-off state like New York or California on top of that if they're foolish enough to live there).

The rich complain about having to pay sales tax on their big money items
@TheBaldr
@TheBaldr Ай бұрын
Actually have you heard of economic elasticity? When supply is more elastic than demand, buyers bear most of the tax burden. When demand is more elastic than supply, producers bear most of the cost of the tax. Luxury items the demand is more elastic than the supply. So it is the companies that produce the items are paying the taxes, not the rich. Often these are smaller companies that provide niche items to the market. A strong healthy economy has lots of niche items, is better than a smaller economy without them. When the taxes get to high it puts these companies out of business, and again because of economic elasticity it is not the rich paying the burden of the tax. Your being brainwashed by these propaganda videos saying the rich not paying their fair share.

Especially in America, the land of democracy. Benjamin Franklin made a very strong argument for democratizing wealth and property in 1783. "The Remissness of our People in Paying Taxes is highly blameable, the Unwillingness to pay them is still more so. I see in some Resolutions of Town-Meetings, a Remonstrance against giving Congress a Power to take as they call it, the People’s Money out of their Pockets tho’ only to pay the Interest and Principal of Debts duly contracted. They seem to mistake the Point. Money justly due from the People is their Creditors’ Money, and no longer the Money of the People, who, if they withold it, should be compell’d to pay by some Law." "All Property indeed, except the Savage’s temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents & all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity & the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man for the Conservation of the Individual & the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who by their Laws have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire & live among Savages.- He can have no right to the Benefits of Society who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it." -Benjamin Franklin

@@nicklang7670 that’s totally subjective based on your perspective and political ideologies what’s shown in the media heavily Skews popular opinions. I could show that welfare has done more harm than good. When the war on poverty began in the 1960s it didn’t do what they said it would do! It increased the % of the population that depends on government, it increased the # of fatherless households, which is the key to raising productive members of society. The more they spent it made no difference in lowering the % of the population that was dependent on government, you could argue that had the government done nothing people would have been better off. Number of people in poverty was already declining before the war on poverty started. Also you have to look at how poverty is measured, studies don’t include the amount of government services poor people receive, poor people in America consume three times the amount of stuff then poor people in other countries.

Just look how much of the history you have chosen not to include because almost all of it proves the argument you used is wrong. For instance in the 50’s when the statistic for the average salary during the time is used it will most likely not include women or people of colour, remember science and studies before not too long ago only represented white men.

The US tax code is absurdly complex, completely wrong about so many principles, working from assumptions that were obviously out of step with society nearly 50 years ago and then just to make sure the US govt is hobbled by lack of revenue the IRS is massively underfunded and understaffed. The net result is that the tax gap in %age terms (of total tax due) is roughly 3x the size of a semi-competent country with a mature economy. Consider this the UK tax authority, HMRC, employs 66,000 people to deal with the tax affairs of 68 m people and companies. The IRS which has to deal with 320+ m people and companies employs just over 90,000 people. Allowing for economies of scale, the IRS should be employing at least 250,000 people and if that resulted in the US tax gap being of a similar %age to the UKs, the IRS would be collecting in an additional $400b a year in taxes!

Secondly, it seems obvious to me that if everyone, including the wealthy that cheat, paid their share then this country could fund whatever remedies it is want of. Scapegoating the wealthy solves nothing. There will _always_ be a wealthiest 1% (and a 0.1%) someone will always be “the richest person” regardless of how progressive the tax system is, so the focus needs to be on making the tax system fair, and ensuring that _everyone_ plays by the rules, no scofflaws and minimal loopholes. There are plenty of people who grew up rich who are good people, who pay their fair share, who contribute to society in proportion to their means, they are running businesses that employ people, they are starting new businesses, innovating, and driving economic growth. Having said that, I agree that there are spoiled rich brats who are terrible people living off their trust funds, but vilifying them is no more productive than when Republicans vilify illegal immigrants. My suggestion is that we need a more aggressively progressive income tax code, probably running as high as 45%, to redistribute wealth so that the top 1% of wealthiest Americans control like 10% of the total wealth (instead of the 30% they currently own) and the 0.1% control like 2%, instead of the 14% they currently own. The problem isn’t that some people are rich, the problem is that too many people are poor, and the economic gains of the past 20 years have been very unequally distributed, accumulating almost entirely with the top 1% and no one else.

They're looking at net income taxes paid rather than total federal taxes. Your paycheck would have FICA, Medicare, SS and such taken out (your employer would owe a roughly equal amount that you paid for these taxes). You'd also have some taken out for income taxes. Frequently the income tax portion would be reduced by standard deductions. Depending on your total earnings, you may well have gotten all of those federal income taxes back in your tax return. However, at minimum wage, the SS Medicare and such might have been the majority of the federal taxes you paid, and you won't get those back... Well, you'll get social security, probably, someday and maybe unemployment. For higher income earners, they pay the SS, Medicare ect (up to a maximum, they have a maxed out SS check too), but federal income taxes are the majority of the taxes paid. They don't get all of it back either through standard deductions. Most of the time, even when they've planned carefully, they pay all that SS tax and likely more than that in federal income taxes. So, while everyone is paying SS/Medicare, about 40% of taxpayers either have sufficient standard deductions to not pay federal income tax or get it all back. If you were at minimum wage, you were likely in that group.

Can you make a video on corporate influence on our tax returns? We are supposed to have the ability to do taxes for free, but so.many of us wind up paying coroorations lime Intuit to prepare our taxes. They influenced the government to delegate free tax return software to these corporations and, in turn, they made the free tax return software harder to access.

I totally believe all the reported outcomes of this boost to IRS working capital. Surely, the same person who is given Intel billions of dollars in subsidies and put tariffs on Canadian wood during a lumber crisis has implemented a calculated and intelligent budget for the IRS. Imagine advocating for a massive increase to government welfare instead of seeking avenues to meaningfully simplify the tax code to prevent cheating in the first place. This is a bandaid solution that should be greeted with the utmost skepticism. Especially since the IRS already preferentially audits regular people over the uber rich, despite the alleged 12 dollar return per dollar spent.

You don't have a clue. Lower income and middle-class people were being audited at higher rates because the IRS just didn't have the resources to go after the wealthy and corporations that always have more complicated tax returns. With this increase in funding, ordinary taxpayers are having an easier time getting through on the phone while the IRS is forcing companies and the wealthy to pay up. Facts.

I’ve never been a fan of how RPGs typically handle accuracy. Often you’re just maximizing some stat to avoid the off chance you miss and do absolutely nothing with an action. Few games make accuracy a more compelling (or at least less sucky) strategic element. Though it’s mostly just a bandaid, this shock mechanic does sound interesting. 🤔

No individual making up to $30k a year should be taxed. Need to be able to collect taxes on cash sales/services. Need to automate collection of data for all sources of income…passive and employment related. The only data the IRS should need to collect is on the credit or expense side. Top tax rate on income below $1MM per household or business max at 20%. Over $1MM per household start at 25% and max out at 50% for highest 10% and up. No cap on social security.
