Or just an opponent who didn't get white pieces, or even just anyone of the 80% of players who start E4. It's hard to not get at least a couple more book moves out of king's pawn.

If the opponent played E4 instead of E3 the defense with the knights and pawns would've been book moves right? The only reason that they became non-Book moves was that E3.?

With a somewhat decent opening, this actually would be a nice challenge. But of course there's only so much you can do when your opponent opens with 1. e3.
@NYKevin1004 ай бұрын
Why do 100s open with e3 anyway? Surely they are not actually trying to play the Van Kruijs opening, and it's not to play Qh5 Bc4 etc. because you can do that after e4. Is it just because they're afraid of blundering the pawn on e4?
@chesscomsupport86894 ай бұрын
@@NYKevin100 Maybe they aren't trying to play a particular opening. They just pick out an available move in the position (which in the case happens to be the starting position) that they feel like playing at that moment.
@NotBamOrBing4 ай бұрын
@@NYKevin100they're stupid
@Muffinmurdurer4 ай бұрын
@@chesscomsupport8689if you want the thought process behind that move: 1. they wanted to get the queen out 2. they dont want anyone to play any confusing openings like the caro kann or the scandi, so e4 is off the table 3. they're scared that if their pawn goes too far they'll forget about it and it'll be captured, so keeping it close prevents the opponent from actually attacking it 4. the concept of tempo is entirely foreign to them so if they ever need to move it to e4 they absolutely can and will never consider that they should've just done that from the start 5. they have seen it work maybe twice before, and are sure that the opening is fine and doesn't need to change
@LeoKinhg4 ай бұрын
@@NYKevin100I'm almost 100% sure that they play it because they think it's a safe move. You are not opening your position and your pieces are all underdeveloped, so the opponent can't do much. Most rookies play like that when they are learning. My mother used to play this same opening when I was teaching her. She would play 1.e3 or 1.d3 every time she got white.

You get a sense for when Simp's video is about to end. And if you want an idea for how to feel it... when fhey start to needlessly explain why "The opponent shouldn't" or they say "I've got an idea..." 2~ minutes in, you know its coming. Obviously without looking at the timeline.
