Before Turning Red came out, many fans were skeptical about the 22 and Mei Lee connection even being a possibility, especially since Turning Red took place in Canada, and was about a giant red panda, rather than our New York setting seen in Soul’s movie. However, after Turning Red’s most recent release, and taking a look at the finer details of BOTH movies, it might not be such a farfetched theory after all!

A lot of people are talking about how this doesn't line up timeline wise, but what people seem to forget is that the in Great Beyond and Great Before, time is irrelevant. Souls jumping down to earth may be going in at different points in the timeline and not in a linear order or fashion.

yea Joe ending up in the great beyond did not necessarily mean they were still in the same timeline as when Joe “died”. They only ended up in the same timeline because the pirate dude (don’t know his name) specifically showed Joe his life, which was in that specific timeline. lots to go over lol

I honestly would've liked to see if the ending of Soul turned out very different. There was a storyboard indeed that was scrapped by the director saying it "didn't have the emotional impact" as he thought before settling with Joe returning back to Earth and enjoying life. The scene would've then cut back to him on Earth perhaps at his home or classroom getting a knock on his door from a mother with a young girl complaining she "doesn't like piano." Joe recognizes that voice from somewhere and opens the door to reveal this girl who is none other than 22! That reunion would've been something to me.

But it wouldn't make sense as it'd take years for 22 to grow up seeing as how they were just born when the movie ended (Basically) And 22 chose the voice because in the great before you can choose who you wanna be the voice wouldn't be the same in their human body as a baby wouldn't be born with an adults voice

I am pretty sure she‘s not 22 because in 2002 when Turning Red takes place people didn‘t have smartphones but in Soul they did so Mei would be already an adult during that time and 22 was born after that

I think when she says "for generations" means that Meis parents could simply move from China after she was born to Canada because that's where her family lived through generations it doesn't necessarily implies that's Meis parents live there for generations just that part of her family did through out the years.

i don't think the eye color should be taken into consideration when determining who 22 becomes because in the movie Soul, those new born souls (the toddler-like souls) they all have purple eyes same as 22. So maybe the reason why 22's eyes are purple is because she's a pure soul whose never passed down on earth before. Joe's eyes are brown because he's passed down on earth and transitioned into the great beyond. same with that old man with the stick , he kept his exact eye color from the body he was in on earth and that is the color blue. It doesn't mean that 22's eyes will remain purple the moment she reaches Earth so the Turning Red theory still sticks. So those theories about 22 being that lady from Ratatouille , that little girl from Inside Out, or Boo from MI, Dory or Violet are immediately debunked. However i think 22 became Ming or she's prolly Sun Yee dk or maybe even mei's future daughter

Is time linear in the Pixar universe? Because Joe was alive and nearly died when cell phones were in use - a smartphone in fact, so his death and encounter with 22 was around 2010 or later. Mei was born in what, late 1980s? I can’t remember how time works in the Great Before, but it would be strange for 22s Soul to visit earth when Mei was alive - Mei would be a young adult at the time of Joe’s death. Personality wise they mesh, but timeline not so much.

I dont think that the before is linear though. In the movie they said how it wasnt on the timeline. Souls are born and deceased at all stages in the earths history. I thought that souls could be born at any stage in the earths time

The thing they forget though is that turning red took place in 2002, while Soul takes place later, The Iphone wasnt invented till 2007. and even though smart phones were invented in the 90's The Iphone popularized them, before I phones everyone used Flipphones, the phone used in Soul is clearly a Touchscreen phone which wasn't widely used till 2007. When we see the full phone we see the screen which shows 0 buttons on the screen, which was a trait that apple brought forward in 2010. also if you look at the At the Port on the phone, its using either a USB C port which wasn't invented till 2014 or if its an Iphone clone then it uses the small charger which wasn't a thing before 2012.

I kinda thought that maybe 22 is actually Riley. They both love pizza and it seems that they enjoy life so much. But once their life, in this case Rileys life, is gone and left back in Minnesota, she felt that everything is over for them. She felt soulless. 22 loves life so much, so if everything she loves about living is gone, she would feel like her pouropus or spark is missing. Now I one time thought that 22 may have landed on India, China, or Russia. She may have missed landing on China and landed in Russia. There was also a theory that she is adopted because she doesn't look like her parents. So maybe she was born as a baby ment to be given away to new parents once she's born. 22 is an old soul. So when she landed on earth, it probably was an accidental baby as it's unexpected. Also do to the fact that 22 wants to enjoy life like, it could make sense as to why Joy is obsessed with being happy all the time. Riley would try to enjoy life but can't and eventually feels soulless.

2 things they didn’t explain here I just wanna say to clear up. In one scene from Turning Red they say the family has lived there for generations. So what they said in the video now, they lived there. It can’t be true. I think that maybe they went to visit family or friends near Shanghai when Ming unexpectedly gave birth to Mei there. Another thing, Soul takes place in 2020. Turning Red is in 2002. So, how is this possible? Well in one scene from Soul we hear 22 tell Joe “Time really isn’t a thing here in the Great Before.” Proving that it is possible for her to end up in 1989, when Mei was born. So just 2 things I wanted to tell you all and clear up, this is very possible and though Pixar probably never will, I do hope that they some day announce 22 is Mei.

no. Every single Disney animated movie (including Pixar) to date is not set in the exact same year the movie itself was released. Eg. Frozen was released in 2013 but it takes place in the 1840's. Encanto was released in 2021 but it takes place in the 1950's. same with Turning Red, it was released this year but is set in 2002... just because Soul was released in 2020 doesn't mean it was set in 2020. Disney has never done that with any of their animated movies. Soul is probably set in the late 2010's because of the type of smartphone Joe was using.......

Mei was NOT born in China. Ming says their temple is one of the oldest in Toronto and her mom also live’s in Florida so they’ve likely been living in Canada for quite some time

Is it true that time affects Great Beyound?, I don't think so because in the part of the film when Joe changes souls with a cat, the cat is still alive. I think 22 is Mei Lee but born at a different time but in the same location. it could be that ming and jin are actually from china after that they went to turonto to serve as a new home.

I believe that Mei's mother said that the panda forms were considered a gift until the family immigrated to America, after which it became necessary to bind up the pandas when the girls reached puberty. This would mean that her family had left China at least two generations before she was born.

Great video and fun theory, but I had another idea. What if 22 became Mei's ancestor Sun Yie (probably misspelled her name sorry)? There's less info on her to make this argument but this also means that there isn't enough info to refute this theory either.

The issue with this theory though is that the dude from Soul the guy who guided 22 to her destination, died in the 2000's not the 90's and i think the story of Mei begins in the 90's until it does reach the 2000's.

Also if anyone has studied numerology, the number 22 is said to be a master number and is said to be the "master builder or master architect" You could say that the 22 is a more materialized version of the master number 11. And from what i have read about it the number 22 is a practical, perfectionist, and bold is their main personalty. Perhaps 22 is actually the soul's life path or personality number and that became Mei's soul therefore her life path and personality. of course that would mean her birthday if added together would equal the number 22.

In the movie over the moon if you look at the girl's 22 and fei fei they look similar if not the same and there personalities are very similar if not the same two both have red and or pink cheeks that are pretty prominent and both live in China or Japan and both movie's were made in 2020 over the moon coming out before soul and I believe some of the same people worked on both movie's so it's possible

Hey,I say we roll with whatever floats your boat...Because another thing I should let you know is that near the end of Turning Red when Meilin Lee meets Sun Yee one more time and they both turn into giant red pandas and fly up to the moon,we all see that Sun Yee's giant red panda form still has the crown on her head that her human form wears...And if you haven't been watching many previous Disney and Pixar movies you'd realize that unless she's a commoner playing dress-up,only royalty wear accessories like crowns,dresses,or royal robes...So that would also possibly mean that if Meilin Lee is a princess then that means Soul 22 was born of royalty when she finally headed to earth...

I think her dad is 22. He had a Chinese accent, and her mom didn't. So I got the impression that he was from China, but her mom was at least raised in Canada.
