So true! Some students flat out refuse to use the standard multiplication algorithm. They've been told they can only use the box method. It now takes 2 mins to get the wrong answer when it used to take only 30 secs.

@@Tjalve70you break 2 numbers into place value, draw a big box with enough squares for each, then multiply each place value. It's a royal pain in the caboose. It works for a few visual learners but only if they can remember the steps.

I made my daughter memorize multiplication tables up to 12 in 2nd grade. She's in 5th now and we're fighting to deprogram all these methods - box, turtle, lines. Just use long multiplication and division. Why confuse them. They can learn the others as party tricks if they want later. Saving that much time should give them back their recess.

The really sad thing is you can't fathom how many people young and old that still can't make change. Nine times out of ten they'll give you back more. For ie., you tell the cashier you'll be paying cash. The purchase is $12.15. So you pull out a twenty and in anticipation that's what the cashier plus in to get the change total. However, you have just way too many ones so you decided to add $2.15 to it. Almost instantly they start to panic as a very powerful dose of confusement goes right to their core. They start to give you back all different kinds of change. Even including the twenty. All you are looking for is a ten dollar bill. Then they get help from a manager usually and the manager doesn't know either. I'm now 57. If i wasn't so honest I could've made at least over ten thousand bucks from sheer stupidity.

And has anyone else noticed how these kids don't know how to deal with cash at the registers? If you give them $21 so you can get a $5 bill back, or even extra change, many of them are clueless and have to ask for help or they give you a look as if YOU are the dumb one??

I've worked in both retail and restaurants. Every time we get a new employee who's still in school the first thing we have to do is teach them how to count back change. I have done this for over 50 high school seniors. I could count back change in elementary school. The young people graduating high school are at least 2 years behind what they need to know to get into freshman college class. I'm not sure what they're being taught but it's definitely not how to survive in this world. The company my husband works for. You can spend 8 hours on your phone ignoring customers, and you won't get fired. If you even try to write them up, they have a complete and total breakdown, a temper tantrum or they quit. @@Ninjanimegamer so sad to hear that. My kiddo was an intermittent honor student starting from kindergarten. In 8th grade I also told her I would take her to Disneyland if she got honor roll for the whole year. She did it and I panicked. I didn't think she would and I didn't have the money for tickets.
