So true! Some students flat out refuse to use the standard multiplication algorithm. They've been told they can only use the box method. It now takes 2 mins to get the wrong answer when it used to take only 30 secs.

@@Tjalve70you break 2 numbers into place value, draw a big box with enough squares for each, then multiply each place value. It's a royal pain in the caboose. It works for a few visual learners but only if they can remember the steps.

I made my daughter memorize multiplication tables up to 12 in 2nd grade. She's in 5th now and we're fighting to deprogram all these methods - box, turtle, lines. Just use long multiplication and division. Why confuse them. They can learn the others as party tricks if they want later. Saving that much time should give them back their recess.

We taught my nephew at 12 the way we do math. He was annoyed with the school system for wasting his time & taught his buddies how to do math. Then they all started doing math that way at school & told the teachers to pound sand, 2 years later they are still doing it our way.

The really sad thing is you can't fathom how many people young and old that still can't make change. Nine times out of ten they'll give you back more. For ie., you tell the cashier you'll be paying cash. The purchase is $12.15. So you pull out a twenty and in anticipation that's what the cashier plus in to get the change total. However, you have just way too many ones so you decided to add $2.15 to it. Almost instantly they start to panic as a very powerful dose of confusement goes right to their core. They start to give you back all different kinds of change. Even including the twenty. All you are looking for is a ten dollar bill. Then they get help from a manager usually and the manager doesn't know either. I'm now 57. If i wasn't so honest I could've made at least over ten thousand bucks from sheer stupidity.

And they even changed how to do math problems as far as the order of what you add/subtract/multiply even with the parentheses. It's insane!! And has anyone else noticed how these kids don't know how to deal with cash at the registers? If you give them $21 so you can get a $5 bill back, or even extra change, many of them are clueless and have to ask for help or they give you a look as if YOU are the dumb one??

Maybe I'm expecting too much, especially when people don't know which too, to or two is the correct word to use.

I've worked in both retail and restaurants. Every time we get a new employee who's still in school the first thing we have to do is teach them how to count back change. I have done this for over 50 high school seniors. I could count back change in elementary school. The young people graduating high school are at least 2 years behind what they need to know to get into freshman college class. I'm not sure what they're being taught but it's definitely not how to survive in this world. The company my husband works for. You can spend 8 hours on your phone ignoring customers, and you won't get fired. If you even try to write them up, they have a complete and total breakdown, a temper tantrum or they quit. I think they're running under the delusion of any warm body will do theory of business.

Now at this school they teach kids how to fucking do math the old way. When my kids graduated most of the class went on to college or had already begun college courses and those that didn't went to a vocational school to learn a skill. That is teaching Ladies and gentlemen. Most of those young men and women now have really good jobs because they received and education that actually taught them something.

if we used the new math that is being pushed around nowadays back in the 1960s, we would have a lot more dead astronauts.

Look at it this way, by the time we reach the year 3000. Gen Z will either be very, very old or the majority of them will have died out.

In HS in the early 80's we took classes like Algebra, Trig, Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and so on. We weren't allowed to use calculators except in certain cases where the teacher said it was ok, so everyone could get out their huge Texas Instruments calculators and if you had the rechargeable battery, well, you were a pimpin'.

Her parents did not do their job. My kid laughed at her coworkers who couldn't figure out how to make change without the cash register telling them what to give back.

This is on the educational system parents force us to pay for. The very least it can do is actually educate the kids.

@@user-zu5do6ri6r if I my child's education up to the public school system she wouldn't have graduated with honors from both high school and university. I sent her to kindergarten reading and writing in two languages. I taught her to do simple basic math in her head. Calculators were for stupid kids. If you start them with a good foundation, then the school system has a fighting chance and you get them out of the regular classes that tend to teach to the least intelligent kid in the class. Also expand their vocabulary by not baby talking to them. Talk to them like you are talking to an adult, an intelligent adult.

@@kathleenmcfarlane2555 it was a similar situation with us too. However, by the time our child entered middle school, she was taking college courses in programming, she decided she was too smart for school and stopped doing any work. She followed her peers into a spiral of nonsense. Whatever we provided for her, or restricted she always did the exact opposite.

@@Ninjanimegamer so sad to hear that. My kiddo was an intermittent honor student starting from kindergarten. She didn't seem to understand that you need to be an honor student every quarter or semester to be an honor student for the whole year. Then the rebellion started and she would tank her grades to get back at me. I had a few come to Jesus talks with her where I let her know she wasn't hurting me by getting bad grades. I told her frankly that I have my education and degree. No matter what she does to me she can't take that away. I'm only trying to help her get hers. Education is the one thing a person can't take away from you. I then illustrated my point by taking her phone. Her best friend. It took a few time for that message to sink in. In 8th grade I also told her I would take her to Disneyland if she got honor roll for the whole year. She did it and I panicked. I didn't think she would and I didn't have the money for tickets. I scraped together the money for one ticket, then a family friend of a friend worked at Disneyland and got me in for free. She was constantly honor roll from then on.

So if you educate your kid, before sending them to get an education, your kid will actually get an education? So why then are you forcing us to pay for an education that your child did not need?

It's funniest crap but sad at the same time. I truly feel bad for these kids nowadays because I've watched with Friends of mine's children raising their children and it's like half these kids can't read by the time they get the 10th grade. Math is completely an outer space. I truly feel bad for this generation it breaks my heart
