To clear up any confusion, the athlete who placed 6th in this race was running unattached and therefore did not score for any team. It's because of this that Newbury Park's placements (1,2,3,4,7(6)) > added to a total of 16 points. Here's the website with the overall results - www.rtspt.com/events/cif/xc2021/mp/#event1

This is just insane. When I ran my PR of 15:38 last week I just absolutely lost it and was filled with so much emotion and happiness so I can't even begin to imagine the sheer amount of emotions and pride these boys feel running those times, and getting 1 point shy of a perfect score. Just came back to report that the Newbury Park boys went 1,2,3 (Colin, Leo, Lex - I hope I got the Young bros order right) at the Garmin RunningLane XC National meet. Oh, and Colin set a new National XC 5k record time with 14:04, beating Dathan Ritzenheim's record of 14:10 from 2001. The Young's also broke the previous record, right behind Colin. Mind-blowing stuff 🤯. I'm hoping for a Total Running Productions video on this race 😇.

Wild to think about how their track season is going to go… Though they had a small gap between No. 3 and 4, gotta emphasize that their No. 4 guy (Aaron Sahlman) was their No. 2 (13:42) at the Woodbridge Invite earlier this season (and has the least experience with the CA state meet course). So his fitness is probably closer to No.1-3 right now than the state meet results would suggest. Also, Colin and Lex already went 8:43 for 3200 at the Arcadia track meet last season-meaning they could legit have FOUR under 8:40. AND a couple more guys under 8:50 (Their sometimes No.5/sometimes No.6 guy Daniel Appleford also already went 8:56 at Arcadia). It’s wild to just consider that… A team’s sometimes-No. 6 guy is going INTO his track season already with an 8:56 from the previous year. He would’ve won most state meets as a JUNIOR. And without a miracle, he couldn’t even podium at his local league meet…

I am massively impressed by this astounding accomplishment. Well done, guys! 👏🏻👍🏻 A thousand years ago when I was in high school I was a pretty decent sprinter but not good at long distances. Our bonehead coach made us all run 3-6 miles loops with the little cross country runners though and it those runs nearly killed us. I remember my first day in track, the coach made me run a 6 mile loop and I made it 4 miles until I turned blue from exhaustion. The guys I was running with laughed at me and told me they were the top distance runners on the team. Cruel joke by our coach. He was always doing stuff like that. We did have some very elite sprinters on that team though who set some national records in the early 1970’s.

They obviously have a special coach. Having one or two superstars can be attributed to talent, but when you have seven runners from one high school that are the very best in the state, the coach is doing something unique. A lot of people are asking about their training, but their training isn't much different from all the other high schools they are competing against. Its all about their natural talent and Newbury Parks recruiting. Newbury took the youngs and sahlmans from Camarillo SD and the others from other surrounding districts. They aren't the most legit team, but Great Oak and other GOATs recently have been doing that as well, even though the supreme court ruled against it. Its pretty unfair to those following the rules, but CIF cares more about people wearing spikes than a literal supreme court ruling.

The reason why Newbury Park has been this good is because the coach Sean Bronsan recruited those student athletes from nearby cities. My former high school coach told me about this. The Youngs came from Western Camarillo, the Sahlmans came from Eastern Camarillo, and Aaron Cantu actually came from Santa Clarita. These guys ran well in the 8th grade all ran sub 4:50 in the mile. This is rather unusual for high school because recruiting is actually against Supreme Court ruling and increases the emphasis on high school athletics being like collegiate or even professional sports leagues when in reality it should not be that way.
@dobattlers
@dobattlers 2 жыл бұрын
When you get to the elite level like this you’re guna have recruiting and things like this happening, it’s just how it goes. Lots of kids from camarillo go to newbury park naturally instead of camarillo hs. Furthermore the coaching and program at newbury is seemingly extremely good so why wouldn’t you want to go there. even if the youngs and sahlmans went to camarillo they would still be on the same team so its not a completely unnatural occurrence that was constructed through recruitment, rather they are just at one school over the other.
@RunwayIsAwesome
@RunwayIsAwesome 2 жыл бұрын
@@dobattlers Actually the Youngs would’ve attend Rio Mesa and the Sahlman’s Camarillo High. Look if recruiting is okay with you then how come its ruled against by the Supreme Court and other states like Michigan. The problem is that CIF does not enforce against recruiting unlike most other state associations.
@RunwayIsAwesome

@@dobattlers And also lets not forget that Aaron Cantu came from Santa Clarita and Hector Martinez came from Los Angeles. This is not pure coincidence.
@RunwayIsAwesome
@RunwayIsAwesome 2 жыл бұрын
@@dobattlers And also, what do you consider to be “elite level”? High school sports is not “elite level”. Collegiate and Professional sports is. High School is where kids go to prepare for college not sports institutions. If this is okay to you, then Jackie Robinson West Little League recruiting kids out of its area in Chicago is also okay as well. They are minors, not grown ass adults. Recruiting is definitely okay by college and professional standards but should not be under high school standards.
@dobattlers
@dobattlers 2 жыл бұрын
@@RunwayIsAwesome they are definitely elite at the high school level. They are the best in the nation individually, to me elite isn’t reserved for post high school. There’s plenty of other sports where the elite live a different life while teenagers. Gymnastics/Olympics, top prep basketball stars going to academies, club soccer and the academy/odp leagues, and I’m sure most other sports have elite leagues you are recruited to and play in if you are the best of the best as a teenager. Is this a problem because its happening at a school vs outside the school in a club league? There isn’t really a separate running league to play with and train with when you’re in high school like the other sports, so it has to happen at school. I couldn’t care less what the supreme court voted on, why would that impact my decision of what I think is ok. My personal opinion is that the best should be allowed to surround themselves with the best and train/compete with the best. That’s how we progress in anything in life, by putting the best with and against the best day in day out and that’s what they’ve done. Sure it ruffles some feathers, I’ve heard it too trust me, but hey that’s life. It’s hard to say that any coach/program in ventura county is better than newbury’s.

My average speed rating on Tully Runners was 173 my junior year and 176 my senior year. These guys are most likely all in the 190’s. I was around 20th in New York State

its crazy, but these kids have been running since elementary (there are a lot of good youth programs in southern california) and have gone through serious training as well as sacrifice and for sure are legit, their training makes perfect sense and their coach knows their bodies so well, they’re truly on track to perfect their craft, it would be a heart breaker to see them fail tests. I think most high schools in cali do random drug tests for all sports though, at least mine and the ones in my area do

German Fernandez was in a much weaker division though. Div. 4 I believe, it makes sense there were no runners even close to him. I was there to witness his race, I was coaching at the time, my runners and I ran around the course to watch him, it was amazing to watch!

Another scary thing about this performance is that their 6th runner placed 9th at this meet. Imagine being top 10 at one of toughest state meets in nation, and you don't even score for your team....

Y'all this is my area, I had to choose between Westlake, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, and Agoura for school. I ultimately chose Agoura, but cool to see Ventura County represented. You should look at Matthew Alpert who's a freshman at Agoura. He's insane for his level, and was brought up to varsity for this race. He will definitely be amazing.

@@jahhahn Yeah - I don't run for sports, I play water polo. The Westlake water polo program is good, and I love the coach, but the Agoura one is better. Also Agoura just has a lot more opportunities for stuff im interested in.

You didn't note that Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park are adjacent schools, 8 miles driving distance apart, in the same league and school district. TOHS also was the alma mater of (disgraced, disqualified) triple Olympic Champion Marion Jones, who holds the national record in the 100m and former high school girls Mile record holder Kim Mortensen. The next high school down the road, Westlake had national pole vault record holder Paige Sommers, the next school Agoura had Olympic marathon bronze medalist Deena Drossin Kastor and indoor long jump record holder Tara Davis. I rant about this just to ask: What's in the water there?

I've broke the 5min/mile a handful of times but only on a 1.5mile run. No matter how much training I put in I couldn't do it for 2 back to back miles. It is an I credible feat to be going well below that for 3 miles and still be in high school too.
