Be honest, can you hear a tone difference? I have no affiliation with Celestion just had to try this speaker and was not disappointed. Plus, it looks cool as could be?

Love the sound as well as your playing as always. Since I'm "old" I will share an "old school" tip for better tone at lower volume. A bellari mp110 tube mic preamp is made for microphones, but has both xlr and 1/4 " umputs and works magic used after your pedals but just before the amp. It has gain, volume 20 db pad, phase reverse, and phantom pwr, which you won't need, but makes a sweet, controllable overdrive that will even make a solid state amp sound good. It's a cheap accessory that I will never go without since learning about it. I bought mine to use for solo gigs, so I could put a vocal mic into my amp and play alone without too much gear. Just tried it for the guitar once and blew my mind.

After I stumbled on hard-wire DPDT effects bypass switching in 1972, I haven't had to think much about input impedance. Now I have a variax and I'm digital from the guitar output jack all the way through my DAW to the output of my USB desktop codec. The rule is {ohm x ohm} divided by (ohm + ohm). In this case you mentioned two 8 ohm speakers so: 8x8 divided by 8+8 64*16= 4 ohms- so the rule is the ohms of the power amp side (2 ohms) must be equal to or smaller than the speaker load, in this case 4 ohms (two 8 ohm speakers equals 4 ohms). How I remember this is a river emptying into a lake. The power(2 ohms) is the river and the speakers ( 4 ohms) the lake. The lake must be equal to or larger than the river or the water (current- water current/electric current) starts to back up as it cannot empty fast enough into the lake. Let's say for example you had a 4 ohm power amp but the speakers, the lake, was only 2 ohms. The lake is smaller than the river and the power will back up the river to the head and burn up the amp. A 2 ohm river (head) flowing to a 4 ohm lake (speakers) is just fine! By the way, genius is the ability to make complex things simple! Thank you. Papa J

I think I might have chimed in already on your Instgram feed about my experience with installing a Celestion Alnico Blue 12" speaker in my 1966 Deluxe Reverb when those speakers came out. I was simply blown away with the character of that speaker. It had an incredible bottom end , almost piano like, with a throaty midrange and a sweet top end after it got broken in. It sounded amazing at low volumes and fantastic when pushed. I had tried numerous different style 12" speakers and none had the character of the Celestion Alnico Blue.
@matthewf1979
@matthewf1979 4 жыл бұрын
The Deluxe Reverb is an impedance mismatch from the factory, they all still work if not abused and maintained. They were designed like that to run either single or dual speakers at a 25% mismatch either way. A 50% mismatch going up in impedance is safe-ish, going down is asking for trouble, especially at 1ohm.

Celestion Golds whether 10’s or 12’s are my favorite speakers. I have them in a Vibrolux, my Bad Cat, my Princeton Reverb, my VOX AC15 (that has the Cream Alnico) and now after this Virus thing is over and I can get to gigging, I’m going to try two Golds and two Cream ceramics in my Super Reverb. I have two friends that have been running 2 x 12’s in a their Super Reverb. It’s funny youve brought this video out when I getting ready to put the Golds in my Super. I talked with my amp tech before about it. He said that running at 4 ohms shouldn’t be a problem. If you were running four JBL’s in a Super that would be extremely heavy. Those JBL’s are close to 10 lbs each. The Gold 10’s are about 6 lbs. the Cream are about 3 1/2 pounds.

Alnico sounds perfect in a princeton too. Perfect low volume sound for recording and proper rehearsals. They sound even better after a few months of use. If you want to save a bit of dough the Newer Jensen Alnicos are vvv close indeed to this, they also need a "running in" period , I used my Fender proreverb with a Jensen P12Q as my "Jukebox" to speed up the running in. 2 to 3 weeks playing 1 hr a day , 20hrs maybe 30.

According to Greg Gagliano in Vintage Guitar Magazine, Fender sometimes issued mismatches from the factory during transitional phases like using up the transformers from the Bassman 6G6 in the Bassman 6G6A in 1961 into 1962 and also in the 3X10 Bandmasters that shipped with 8 ohm transformers.

A Celestion type speaker will DEFINITELY help out a fender circuit. It adds more midrange and has less flub. Weber makes a GREAT 10” Alnico that is a cross between a P10R and a Alnico Gold,basically. It’s the 125P. I put one in an AA764 Champ build I did recently and it really made the overdrive more “solid” for lack of a better term but the cleans are still pretty much the same. It’s much less expensive speaker than an actual Celestion too. Cool video btw! I always enjoy your playing.

Fender amps are somewhat forgiving. Generally you can half or double the speaker impedance. After all, they give you an extension speaker jack. Do not use it now. By cutting the speaker impedance in half you reduced the reflective impedance in the primary increasing current in the output tubes. This will lessen tube life a bit, lower power and decrease bandwidth. BTW, the output jack actually shorts out the transformer when the speakers are unplugged. This is to protect the transformer. Also speaker impedance varies. You can’t measure it with an ohm meter. That will give you coil resistance. I believe speaker impedance is determined at 400 hz. Research reflective impedance if you care to learn more. I learned this over 50yrs ago in trade school so I can’t get too technical. I’m surprised I remember anything at all. Sounds good. Like your demo.

Hey Greg great info...I just purchased a 1980 Fender 70watt Super Reverb. The current owner was under the impression that the 4 10's were all original. However, taking a closer look it appears there are two 8 ohm Oxfords (top) and two 16olm CTS alnico (bottom) . I'm just guessing that the CTS alnico may have come out of a Fender Bassman or something (who knows) . I'm no expert on Fender combo's but my ears love the sound, however, I'm concerned about impedance. IF you or anyone else has input let me know?

Jonathan Cowart SR uses 4 x 8 ohms in parallel. This yields a 2 ohm load. The output tranny is 2 ohms. With your set up if they are all in parallel you have 2.66 ohms which overall ok. Do you hear any speaker pair dominating?

My opinion, sounds great. Ive considered a gold but sticking with jensen for the time being. As far as your 2ohn nominal into a 4 ohm cab, your amp is safe. I wouldn't go the other way though ever. My understanding is that the fender external speaker and speaker outputs are run parallel so you can run a second 4ohm cab and your amp will then be running at nominal 2 ohm. Personally, I build my own cabs with pine and i always use 1/2 inch birch ply for the baffles.

Mind you I use pedals to boost up my volume for clean parts and get my gain sounds (I stack: Vemuram Jan Ray / Xotic BB preamp / JHS Morning Glory) and always mic the PRRI (one off-center sm57 pointed at middle of the cone) I've tried diming it a few times for fun but am not a fan of Fender Blackface distortion sound. The Alnico has a slightly better headroom and the stock Jensen and can take the punishment, but if you really need to turn your amp up that loud I'd look into something more powerful/high wattage.

Nice content as always, Matthew. Not the same model Celestion, but I selected a G10 Vintage for my Pre-CBS blackface Princeton Reverb. I was risking hurting the original Fender-branded Oxford so after a couple wrong turns with different replacements, I settled on the G10 Vintage after seeing Jim Campilongo praise it on a KZfaq video. He's a big Princeton enthusiast and his simple assessment is that the G10 "is affordable and sounds great instantly" (exact quote). I especially liked the latter part of that description. I did the same speaker combination in my Dr Z MAZ18Jr 2x10" amp. It was actually first done by Matchless amplifiers where they would put in alnico speaker in a ceramic magnet speaker in the same combo amp. The effects are stunning! Great video dude and great playing as well keep up the good work! Your friend Jim from Seattle!

Having a cab with two dissimilar drivers works well. I just got my new 2x12 Bill Fitzmaurice designed cab and I stuffed it with one new Greenback and one 12 inch Eminence out of an organ. They break up at different rates and it’s really nice.

Your tone sounded sweeter with that speaker, me thinks. I use the Celestion Gold G10 with my Vox amp and it sounds great. Great speaker.

That's Damn nice, Matthew. It's not going to explode. It sounds very much like a Princeton reverb but full.

Sounds great. Low volume is perfect. I run my Fender amps between 3 to 4. I have a "red knob twin, reissue custom vibrolux, and a Dr. Z. Don't need to blow your ear drums. That's a great tone you have.

Funny. I keep referencing your tone to calibrate my ears. Hours spent tweaking my gear and the next day I wonder what I was thinking... Guessing the gigs might be thin on the ground for a few months but keep the videos coming. Always enjoy them.

My 2x10 super is my go to. I have the original 4x10 and also run it in a 1x15 with a 2ohm Weber Chicago. The 2x10 just has a pair of eminence legends in it but they still sound great. Don’t worry about the mismatch, I’ve played countless hours on it and have thrown lots of fuzz and od at it and never once had an issue.

Good on ya, young man. what you experience now is changing from a high power, heavy mass (cone, suspension, voice coil ) speaker chassis to a light mass, faster responding chassis. Back in the day a Highwatt 4x12 speaker used four 20 watt FANE chassis and sounded killer even at low volumes and with a 50 watt head. The secret: low mass fast response. Try to get one of those 70s FANEs cheap on eBay and learn ...you’ll be amazed. You may use, however, any vintage, low wattage PA speaker chassis from the late sixties to mid 70s, be it Eminence, CBS, Evoice and the like for almost identical tonal qualities. Try and grow with it.

Yeah for me nothing can touch a celestion blue, and the gold is the same thing, just more output. The chime is heavenly

Fender amps are pretty forgiving with output impedance, especially so if you're keeping the volume/output below half. It should be OK although you might find you're running through tubes a little quicker.As with all things your mileage may vary. Great idea for a combo, way to go Matthew.

Love these speakers! I have a 12 inch gold in a Kingsley Bailey 30 (A hand wired el84 amplifier made up here in Canada) and it sounds amazing. Records very well too. Awesome idea Matthew! The only thing that has kept me away From super reverbs is the size and weight, but I love them when they are back lined.

Another great video. Remember that rated impedance is a nominal, average value that may vary rather dramatically with frequency. Don't be too concerned about its factory rating.

Alnico Celestion speakers are great. Really like their sound. Your performance in the video sounded rich with a good amount of bass...thought it sounded really clear, and rich. The other advantage of only running the amp at 3 or 4, is being able really get the most out of pedals. You have nothing but headroom. Try stacking your overdrive or fuzz in front now?

Hey ! As far as your Ohms go, 2x the load your amp wants to see, you're safe. The tone might differ slightly from the matching combination, (Dr Z did a video on that) but for the rest, you're OK. I have a mismatch on a VOX 8 Ohms through a Celestion CreamBack 16 Ohms and it works/sounds great. When I push it, the breakup comes a bit earlier and the tone is a tad more spongy. Sounds just great ! Keep safe & peace bro ;-)
