Can I remind folks to be civil in the comments section, please? Obviously the title is a bit clickbaity, but unfortunately it's necceserry for the dreaded algorithm. Also, this video isn't a critique or proclamation that one sequence of the scene's shots is superior to the other. It's simply an observation of how the original filming order can be evidenced in the final-cut. Obviously things change in the edit - that's common place in film!

On VHS there are actually 4 different versions which that scene plays differently in all of them. Its actually really really weird. You have the original movie that is just called Star Wars on the cover, the one that is called A New Hope, they one in the gold case, and the one in the silver case. There are scenes in all of them that are different between the other movies. The variation is insane but one scene that is in all of them but in the gold and silver is shortened to where its almost not easily seen is where Vader locks on to Luke and fires and in the just Star Wars version you see the lasers traveling for a few yards but you don't see them hit or what happens and in the other variations the actions are shrunk down and in the DVD release the scene is straight up taken out of the video. In the scene where Han fires and hills Greedo the originals have Han firing first but in the gold and silver Han fires second and the angle of where Greedo fires is changed depending on version. One of the variations has Han firing under the table blowing Greedo's dick off. Yea Han is evil for that one. Its either the gold or silver that Porkins had a different call sign of a Red number call sign instead of his extremely insulting name. Yes George literally named the only fat guy Porkins. One line that is so god awful that was never taken is in all versions. The line is "Obi Wan taught you well." A proper response would be "Obi Wan has not taught me anything sense you killed him like 2 months ago." Oh wait another change is in the original versions it was 2 months from the first movie to the second then it changed to several years. Either way months or years Vader should not have forgotten the fact he killed his master. Another thing so bad that proves George Lucas should have watched his own movies to not make such a fucked up failure its not a mistake its a pure failure is in episode 4 a New Hope and all 3 original trilogy movies Luke is 2 years younger than Leah but in Revenge of the Sith they are changed to twins. Another thing that is so wrong is the ages of the characters. So Luke was 17 at the start of A New Hope and Obi Wan was 67. In episode 1 Obi Wan is 17. By the start of Episode 2 10 years have past making Obi Want 27. The end of the clone wars and the end of episode 3 took 14 years making Obi Wan 41. Luke was born when Obi Wan was 41. 17 years after Luke was born Obi Wan should have been 58 but the originals stated he was 67. Hell some things made by George Lucas claim the Clone Wars only lasted 6 years not 14 which would make Obi Wan 50 years making the fuck up of ages even worse. George Lucas should have watched his own movies to not make such massive failures. Hell originally Leah was suppose to be 25 while Luke was 17 granting the ability for Leah to have known their mother as a legit child. Seriously watch your own shit so failures don't happen like these.

Here is a really weird fact the first release of the movie on VHS does not call itself A New Hope and in fact the company that made it on VHS thought it was a single movie in the 1990s and did not realize there were multiple other movies in the series. Lucas Films did not do the hard copy release of any of them but they edited the films and sent them to a company that made them into hard copies. Causing the first movie to not be named episode at all and on the box calls itself a single movie. I have 2 full sets of the gold case, 2 copies of silver case, 1 full set of the set, and the original version that does not call itself part of a franchise but calls itself a single movie. There was for a time a large confusion on weather or not Star Wars had an expanded movie base or not because the movie that was released called itself a single movie and the later releases called it a multi movie franchise and the original release was believed to be a fake movie but no it was real. The entire thing was a giant failure. It was also extremely awkward to where I have to admit I don't like the originals very much at all with so many flaws and down right bland story. Seriously the story is pretty lazy. Blond knight goes to evil fortress rescues princess and big baddie is defeated and evil fortress is destroyed. Also George Lucas is a liar. Go watch Star Blazers and Thundarr the Barbarian. Thundarr The Barbarian was released in 1963. Star Blazers got an English dubbing in the late 1980s but was subbed in the 1960s but was first released in 1954. Both Star Blazers and Thundarr The Barbarian is where all stuff from the original trilogies is blatantly ripped from. Hell the sword in Thundarr is literally called The Saber Of Light and A New Hope. I am not going to state what is stollen from Star Blazers because I serious urge you to watch it and be horrified at how much is blatantly stollen to the point where you would straight up call George the biggest lying sack of shit to ever exist. Old Samurai movie the fuck kind of blatant lie is that. Straight up I actually wonder how George never got sued to hell over it. Also watch the 1987 He Man and the War between Clones and Droid Army movie. That is the rough title. Its a pretty bad movie but The prequels did a better job making that movie. Watch that movie and wonder again how did Star Wars not get sued to hell?!

I saw this film in 77 when I was 5 years old, I had the young reader novelisation the same year, then the proper novelisation in several forms over the decades...I'm ashamed to say that I never noticed this difference between the two (Although I suppose not many of us read the novel 5 minutes before or after watching the movie while both scenes were fresh in our minds). Its a nice catch either way...especially for somebody like myself who lived and breathed this series for decades. Just proves that no matter how deep our interest/love for a franchise is, we can always learn something new. :)

Originally, Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader were two completely separate people. So when Obi-wan says, "he betrayed and murdered your father" he literally MEANS he (person #1) "betrayed and murdered your father" (person #2). Obi-wan isn't being metaphorical, here. Lucas didn't decide to make Darth Vader Luke's father until he started working on the "Empire Strikes Back" script. The problem is, this introduced a huge continuity problem with the first movie (A New Hope), which Lucas finally explained with that awful "certain points of view" line in "Return of the Jedi." Lies aren't "certain points of view." They're just lies. What Obi-wan SHOULD have said was, "You're right, Luke. I was wrong to conceal that from you. I wanted you to remember your father the way he was . . . not for what he later became." It's not a great explanation but it's a lot better than we got. It also makes Obi-wan look like a huge jerk for not warning Luke about this huge psychological blow that Vader was sure to spring on him during their confrontation at Cloud City.

This is 100% fair, though I will say one could justify Obi-Wan's lie out of concern for Luke's ability to control his impetuousness in a way that his father could not...assuming, of course, that Vader had been destined to be revealed as his father all along, rather than a Ep5 retcon.

Yeah, and Luke's mother was on Alderaan when it was destroyed, having nothing to do with Naboo or Padme. The truth was, as the prequels showed, 'from a certain point of view' Emperor Palpatine betrayed and murdered Anakin Skywalker, but mostly he did it himself and Obi-Wan finished the job. From the original trilogy, it's possible that Obi-Wan viewed Vader as the machine, and there was an entire theme about how cybernetics and machinery corrupts and murders the living.

To be fair on Obi Wan's behalf. If Obi Wan had told Luke that his father was the enforcer for The Empire, Luke would've never became a jedi. Sure Lucas made Vader Luke's father, however it works still. It turns what Obi Wan said as a metaphor, and it looks like he suffers from PTSD. In lore Obi Wan does suffer from PTSD and views machinery as corruption. Hence "He's more machine than man now, evil and corrupted." He finds Anakin to be gone and can't be saved, due to PTSD. Anyway, had he told the Luke the truth from the start. Luke would've never became a jedi and possibly believed Owen. That Obi Wan Kenobi was a hermit and insane, possibly laughing at Obi Wan too! However Luke listened to Obi Wan and when he says "You'll find that out truths are true from a certain point of view!" He wants Luke to discover the answers on his own, bread crumbs if you will. He wants Luke to discover the answers on his own, instead of telling him. You don't learn if told the answers do you on a test, do you? No. He wanted Luke to know the man that was his father, not what his father became. Obi Wan loved Anakin, not Vader. Obi Wan also was older and wiser, had the patience to deal with Luke. Unlike he did with Anakin, he was harder, impatient, strict on Anakin. He didn't want a repeat of that. Luke didn't have Anakin's anger, instead Leia did. So Obi Wan knew as well that he didn't have to push Luke around unlike he did with Anakin. That's why Obi Wan feels like he failed Anakin, cause he Obi Wan was high on his high horse. He was blind to see that he was failing Anakin, when Anakin needed him most. Obi Wan wasn't around much to answer Anakin's questions, or shut him down. So that lead Anakin to acting out or hiding things from Obi Wan. Obi Wan recognizes these failures and promises not to do the same with Luke. While he does lie to Luke, it's only to protect Luke from what his father became. He knew if he had told the truth to Luke, he would've never left the farm. And possibly killed by Imperials like Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen. In the end Obi Wan lied to protect Luke from the dark reality, that his father became a mass genocidal psychopath. He wanted Luke to know that his father was a loving son, caring friend, the best star pilot in the galaxy, and Obi Wan was amazed with how strong he was in the force. You don't tell someone who never met their parent, the dark parts. Until they are ready for it. Like I said he wanted to remember Anakin in a positive light, so he separated Vader as a different person. Cause Obi Wan saw Anakin at his best and worse, to him. Anakin was flawed, but a good person. Vader was a genocidal psychopath, serial killer, sociopath who was twisted and evil, beyond saving. When Luke found out the truth, Obi Wan tells Luke in his view that Anakin is beyond saving. Despite Luke feels like he can save his father, and proves Yoda and Obi Wan wrong in the end. They didn't encourage Luke to kill his father, rather to destroy Vader, they separated the two, however they found Anakin irredeemable. Cause ultimately to them and previous attempts, ended up having fallen friend's die. In the act of trying to save them, or the person was purely evil. Another reason why the jedi failed was their blind judgment and didn't try to help fallen individuals, just look at Obi Wan's case how he handled Anakin's fall. He had no idea how to get through to Anakin, cause they didn't teach it. They only taught them to destroy the Sith, as in kill.

None of us understood why Obewan would hand animated kid like Luke a highly dangerous lightsaber Luke had no experience with that burns right through anything it touches when you switch it on. When you see Luke switch it on for the first time he's holding it sideways pointed at Obewan and immediately starts swinging it around, and I'm like holy phwckdood. At the time in 1977 nobody blinked about it because we had never seen one and had no idea what it would do or was capable of, but viewed in restrospect viewing this scene it's very cringe worthy. What if Luke had been holding the light saber backwards when he switched it on and proceeded to slice right through himself... lol I can sort of write it off as he was probably familiar to some degree how to hold them and how they worked just like how even little kids are familiar with how guns work by watching popular media of the time. I'm sure he was no stranger to what a light saber was and how it worked, but probably had never held an actual one before for sure.

It's not out of order that is just how to was filmed, it's edited this way because of Luke's importance to the story and what he's about to embark upon.

They had a chance to “fix” that scene for the 25th anniversary remaster and chose not to, even though they did a lot of other changes.

Going by the actual screenplay, the way it was finally presented was how it was scripted. Most likely the original editor thought it would be better in the wrong order, and Marcia returned it to how it was intended.

Marcia, or Richard, or Paul, or George. Could’ve been any of them. And it definitely wasn’t in that order originally because it’s that way in the novelization, the shooting script, and everything else. Also, C-3PO is awake in this scene when he should be asleep. John Jympsan, the first editor, was fired before he could finish a rough cut. The rough cut and all subsequent cuts were edited by our final editors, Marcia Lucas, Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew, and also George himself

Agree. Listening to Alec Guinness as Ben reminiscing about Anakin is far more emotional for me than the terrible CGI-fest of the prequels. Same with the novelisation of Return of the Jedi, reading about Ben's account of their battle, and then later on, Anakin's thoughts after Luke saved him, and just before he died.

Only partially true, the original editor John Jympson was fired by Lucas for cutting too slow and dull. The "How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit" video is full of misinformation and poorly justified opinions, here's a very thorough response: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdKhiaqrm9Ozhnk.html

What you've just discovered is the actual sequence in the original movie. Star Wars was originally exactly as you describe it, with them watching the recording of Leah first. I know. I saw Star Wars in theater 34 times.

Very interesting. I was hoping you were going to put the clips into the right order and let me watch the entire scene, but you were talking over the clips. Perhaps you would consider a follow up, where you tell people what you are doing, tell them to watch this video, for more information and then stop talking and run all the clips in the order they should go in.

I get why they changed it, but honestly this flows way better than the final cut. I'm surprised this was never reverted in any of the special editions. That awkward silence after they hear Leia's message always gets me lol.

What utter nonsense!! Both versions of the scene work just as well, this is just a different take thats all. Most movies are filmed out of sequence and the novel for Star Wars simply follows the script which also has the same sequence. Nothing to see here!
@Connor17199
@Connor17199 28 күн бұрын
I don't think you understood what he was saying at all. The shots were rearranged in a different order from the screenplay. The novelisation came out well before the movie, and follows the original intended version. They then changed it before release. The order in which they physically filmed the movie has nothing to do with it
@filmdecrypter
@filmdecrypter 27 күн бұрын
Indeed. The point of the video is to demonstrate how the order of shots can change in post-production, as opposed to how they were filmed, and to highlight their original order as evidenced by the novel. It's certainly not a critique or proclamation that one way is better than the other.
