I love how Paul always says he should've grabbed a different glove, then proceeds to use the same glove, cracks me up every time

On my first ship, I was a young man, changing heads on a diesel, I got everything snugged up, and I asked my LPO (Leading Petty Officer) what the torque spec was….he laughed at me and told me to pull till I see stars……so I did, busted off a head bolt below the deck of the block. I will hand it to him he took 100% of the blame but called me a SOB for a good week.

So far the FJ is my favorite build of any of the channels.

If you want your third member builds to outlast engines, transmissions, transfer cases then you have to dump your crush washers for fixed spacers. Once you have set your crush measurement for the strongest depth between pinion and ring. Measure the crush measurement, remove the crush washer, remeasure in the event you distorted or made a change to said crush measurement. Get on the overly large (according to you) lathe, make a static spacer of the exact length with as close as possible interior measurement so it just taps into place. Material should be hardened then polished back to specs before installation. If you are using low horsepower engines and compound gearing such as yours, then you can use AmeraBronze materials for most applications in order to keep the pinion bearings from being pushed apart and sideways. We built rearends for many Nitro Fuel cars with no problems with pinions, rings, etc. Our nemesis was always axle twist. Before retiring the Little Red Wagon I did some maintenance on the rear end. Pulled the axles. Right axle had 21 full turns with less than half inch left in the side gears. Left side had 19 full turns. In the axle's defense it had been a full season of campaigns before the rear axle was gone through. Built a Sled Pulling Little Red Wagon that still has original third member and axles and it still exists in full operational mode in Arkansas at a private collector. Everything works as it did during competitions. If you can get him to pull the rear end you can find my method of pinion spacing. I sent this to you a couple of times before, this time it is a bit more detailed. Next rear end, hope you adopt this method to slow your yearly breakage numbers. Good luck y'all.

Just a little tip from a 46 year machinist. Put the shaft you're putting a bearing on in a freezer for 20-30 minutes and heat your bearings up in some cooking oil before dropping on shafts. Far better on the bearing than using a torch plus you get a bit of lubrication putting it on.

Paul as I worked in industrial mechanical maintenance for 30+ yearsI have been to a few schools bearings being one of them I would like to make a suggestion that you investigate a Induction bearing heater much better than heating with a torch..... I watch every show and enjoy them totally keep up the great work

Paul? I've been out of the transmission business for many years now, and I don't profess to be "Mr Know-it-all" but a noisy automatic was never a good thing. Either air bubbles passing through the pump(fluid starvation/internal leak), bad pump gears or defective converter were the cause of that kind of noise in my experience. Again, I gave up grease and moved on to making sawdust after 25 years of working with Automatics. All of the manufacturers started injecting garbage transmissions into their offerings with the early 4 speed automatics. Hope I'm wrong! Really enjoy your channel!

It’s crazy I have this exact same rear axle setup in my xj shaved 14 bolt arb and zero problems, it’s super rare to see so much carnage must have shock loaded when the axle shaft broke and destroyed some parts.

Maybe you could keep a list of the part numbers for your bearings and stuff so next time it goes you can get the new parts correct the 1st time

Hunter/Landon I know when you are young you are invincible but protect your backs. Once you bugger up your back there is no coming back from it. I hurt mine when I was 17 or 18 loading a riding mower in the back of a truck at my job, I am 51 now and finally had back surgery a few years ago to try to fix it. I still have back pain here and there but not like I dealt with for the 30 years before I had surgery to fuse a few vertebrae.

I worked for a pharmaceutical company at one point and we had some items delivered in dry ice. Most people have seen the fog clouds they put across a floor, but I bet many of you don’t know that if you put some in a Soda bottle, add hot water, cap it and give it a quick toss, it’ll bang like a canon. You need to toss it quickly, as it will take your fingers off. We did this enough times that the neighbouring wear-houses complained.

One nice thing about living "soo far" from everything is not having to put up with unwanted drop ins, those folks you wouldn't go out of your way to see. 😊

Hey Paul, back when I used to build diffs I used to put my carriers in the freezer for a bit for easy ring gear and bearing installation etc. Less burnt fingers LOL

That metal on metal sound it makes when you checked the wear pattern tells me there's failure on the way. Paul, you know that no new bearings should be squealing in a diff after install! The last time i had a th400 whine like that? it was the front pump,, sounded like the converter to me also, but the sound traveled from the pump to the converter, changed the converter, same noise,, tore the pump out of it , put in a NEW pump and yup thats where the noise was coming from. JUST SAYIN......✌ your mileage may vary, lol I know Weston and Roy @ south central,, Good guys, They said the same about you.. I remember the derby daze,, but never got a chance to meet ya.

Watching Paul with the Mapp gas and a bottle, reminds me when I worked in a body shop. We would take the Oxy-Acetylene torch and turn both on and without lighting it stick it in a bucket of car wash water and soap. Let it blow up a bunch of bubbles and then remove the torch and toss a match into the bubbles. WARNING, DO NOT DO THIS BELOW AN OVERHEAD FLORESANT LIGHT! Hearing protection is recommended.

Bet I’m not the only one that laughs when Paul mentions “transmission”

Paul if your going to heat bearings up try holding the torch in the center with the bearing laying on a steel plate for about 15secs maybe more you’ll get even expansion and you don’t need it so hot. And old machinist taught me that years ago.

That is a lot of work tearing down that drive train hopefully at least 6 months but good weather coming I predict 1 month. 🤣

I believe the correct torque spec for the pinion is RFT. stands for Red Faced Torque. When I was apprenticing I asked my Boss the torque spec for something. His response was "Tighten it up till it strips, then back it off half a turn". I loved that old guy he taught me enough that I made a living wrenching for 50 years. Love your content. Good to see you allowing your boys to build stuff. Graden always amazes me what he accomplishes on his own. Not always perfect but the lesson is lost if you don't get to try first. Quality parenting going on here. Love to all.

One of the things that I really enjoy is you just do whatever is before you you don’t try to synchronize your content and it really seems more like life than staging stuff

Just so cool all that in the shop at once working together. Great job as usual

Maybe try some ether (starting fluid) in a two quart soda bottle. A friend of mine told of adapting a cap for a one gallon milk jug and hooking up an airline from the shop to it. They'd put it out in the yard and throw some bread pieces around it. The seagulls would come down to get the bread and the air was going into the jug. When it finally exploded, there'd be seagulls laying all around it. After a minute or two, they all came around and flew off.

Really enjoying your channel. Have a suggestion for high torque differential torture like your crawling rocks would demand... Possibly look into building your pinion set up with a spacer instead of a crush sleeve ? Takes time to set up, but no movement from that point on... Sometimes a crush sleeve will crush a bit more under high torque, and create a sloppy pinion = gear and bearing damage.. Just a thought. You guys are really great to watch, I look forward to every episode you launch !!! James

Hi Paul, In my young and foolish days we would take a garbage bag filled with Oxy-Acetelyne Put it into an oil drum that had the top cut off. Turned upside down. A small a piece of the bag would be sticking out from under the edge. Then we would shoot a roman candle at that piece. When she went off the drum went hundreds (4 or 5 ?) of feet into the air. The boom was so loud we were afraid we would blow out the shop windows LOL. If you do this give yourself some distance from any windows it is loud! "Remember, Shop safety is no accident!"😳 Thanks for another interesting and entertaining video.

I learned to drive on an FJ at 9yrs of age. My Dad would tell me to lock it low, 4wd lever was under the dash, and follow him through the jungle blazing a trail to our ranch😂. Lots of fun!

What I remember from my track coach…”run faster damnit” …. He didn’t seem to understand I have two speeds slow and slower, my contention was if I needed to go faster I had a horse and a car depending on terrain 😂😂😂

Find a socket the same size as the inner race. Heat the socket to near red hot and place it on your bearings inner race. This will expand the inner race without burning the grease out of your bearing.

Dude, use an old kitchen countertop toaster oven to heat gears, races, bearings and such. It heats more slowly and evenly and you don't risk de-tempering your parts which causes them to fail later.

Go for it Jayce. When I was in high school 50 years ago, I was 5'10" and 145lbs. Classified as a 'B'. I was a high jumper. My best was the bar @ 6'3" but my saggy school T shirt caught the bar even though my chest had plenty of clearance (western saddle roll style -Fosbury Flop had just been invented). Then we ran out of time after 1 attempt. Had to call it a day. No 2nd chance. My jump may have been 6'5" or 6". I'll never know. The next day of practice something popped in my launch knee and if I flexed my leg it would make a loud noise and the leg wouldn't support me. Doctors never found it. Oh well. Good luck.

35 years as a mechanic I personally don't like to hear tapered roller bearing because the races are hardened, I press them an feel I get a better life out of them ,just my opinion.
