You guys need to see the video for this on KZfaq. David is so over the top! He’s definitely a “showman”. Steve Vai is the lead guitarist on this album. No one can take the place of Eddie, but he’s damn close!

Steve Vai is an AMAZING guitarist, but the way he meshes with Billy Sheehan on bass and Greg Bissonette on drums is what really makes this special. I love every song on this album, but “Going Crazy” and “Shyboy” are my two favorites. His cover of Sinatra’s “That’s Life” is great too. This band stayed together for the Skyscraper album before they went their separate ways. “Two Fools a Minute” is my favorite they did, but “Hina” melts me.

LOL. I'm not sure. I remember the day that album came out (I was highly anticipating it) and DLR did an interview where he said it was a tribute to the Statue of Liberty & I remember thinking, that's just Dave saying silly Dave things. Nope. Turns out that's what it is. His brain is just a little left of center on most days. lol.@@mangerinegirl

I'd say anyone could be forgiven for not knowing this song was about The Statue of Liberty. It's hard to imagine any sane person writing "the original good time girl" and "when she walks" (?), and "pick up the phone, no time to waste" when talking about her. Even if speaking metaphorically, I can't see how those lyrics make sense! 🙂

DLR assembled an all star band: Steve Vai-guitar, Billy Sheehan-Bass and Gregg Bissonette-drums. Some of the very best players. I have to give Gregg some appreciation...he's like a chameleon or jack of all trades on the drums...he can play every style: rock, jazz, funk, big band, african, country etc. He's the most versatile of the guys. This was David's vision of rock, and he hit it out of the ballpark. It has a much cleaner sound than the the Van Halen recordings. He never intended to leave Van Halen, but, Eddie wanted to record, and David was having fun being a rock star. Besides, Eddie wanted to stretch out and become an "artiste", and Diamond Dave wasn't having it anymore.

nah, you obviuosly dont know much about Van Halen history,.. 1984, 5150 OU812 F.UC.K. , Balance are all much cleaner than anything Roth ever did solo . and Roth went solo in 1985 with "crazy from the heat" , and THEN they kicked him out. that is why Van Halen Had 4 NUMBER ONE ALBUMS IN A ROW after Roth leftt....LOOLLOLOLOL Roth didnt have any platinum albums afteer 1988, meanwhile , Van Halen Dominated the charts with FOUR NUMBER ONE ALBUMS 5150 (6x platinum) OU812 (4X Platinum) F.U.C.K ( 3X platinum) and Balance (3X platinum) Van Halen filled Stadiums in the 90's , while Dave played small theaters to support his albums which sold about 50k in the 90s lolol Van Halen won THE GRAMMY for best album in 1992 F.U.C.K. , While Roth struggled to fill seats . LOLOL His 1991 tour turned into a financial failure, with low attendance and one-third of the shows cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Setlists were shortened and songs from the current album dropped as the US tour went on... LOLOL I think we are done teaching your lesson today kiddo LOLOL CHEERS FROM SUNNY CABO

I'm not sure how wealthy Dave was growing up, but his father was a doctor. After David Lee Roth stopped music, he became a real NYC paramedic. Roth made sure that his debut solo album was absolutely over the top and that he wasnt missing a thing when moving on. He didnt have the voice of Mercury or Plant but the man was all about putting everything into the shows back in those days...

Freaking Awesome Album! If I remember correctly, the song is about the Statue of Liberty. If you want to delve into another Van Halen related new artist, I recommend Eddie Van Halen (and Valerie Bertinelli)'s son Wolfgang Van Halen! Wolfgang played as a bassist in later Van Halen concerts and their last album. His solo albums are under the name Mammoth WVH. (the name is in honor of his Dad.) Sounds like a band, but he plays EVERYTHING on both albums. And there is not a bad song on either album! I recommend starting off with "Don't back down, Another Celebration at the end of the World, or Horribly Right.") In a great video and song that is NOT typical of his sound, he does a very touching tribute to his father called "Distance." You have to do the official video for that one. He mixes in home footage of him with his parents.

Uh, the video doesn't do anything to explain the song. The song is about the Statue of Liberty.

People thought Dave would falter after he left Van Halen but what'd he go do, he puts a band together that included Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and Greg Bissonette. Amazing! Live they were phenomenal. Please please please react to the actual video!

Best solo break away from an iconic historical band... This whole album kicks ass! Steve Vai, Gregg Bissonete, and Billy Sheehan. And now if you're ready DLR raps in the song "Big Trouble" 😊

I remember as a 13 year old when this came out. It was Roth's first solo album, and it went platinum. The video for this song is fun, too. Cheers from a Gen X'er in northeast Ohio. :)

This song is about the Statue of Liberty. And how she is the symbol known round the world and what she stands for. Great tune. The guitar player is Steve Vai, and the bass player none other than the great Billy Sheehan.

1986 was the centennial celebration of the Statue of Liberty. The statue went through a refurbishment for the centennial. This song was David Lee Roth's tribute.

I saw David Lee Roth in 1987 with Poison opening for him and it was one of the loudest concerts I’ve been to. Steve Vai on the guitar was incredible, he had to double neck guitar shaped like a heart, and David Lee Roth came to the stage Flying through the air on cables, landing in a boxing ring and then going onto the stage. I was 10th row center at the right front corner of the boxing ring. Incredible show.

The tune is great, but the video is what makes it all worth while. It's hilarious and a great show! Steve Vai is on lead guitar. Please do another with the video. I'd love to see your reactions.

Who all remembers this concert...beside me I mean? BTW, in case you didn't look it up that guitar is Stevie Vai!! Saw this Eat 'Em and Smile tour (September 25, 1986), and Van Halen's 5150 tour, (May 13, 1986... Eddie Live), in Pittsburgh at the old Civic Arena!! Dave even had them open the roof! This and Dave's next Skyscraper tour, (July 17, 1988), where he Surfed above the crowd on a giant surf board! Dave was a showman!!

Only sad that I didn't get the "Gimme a bottle of anything. And a glazed doughnut. To go....". Please watch "Crossroads" on you movie channel to see more of the guitarist, Steve Vai. Also, I still have this on a Madonna cassette. I worked at a music store when this came out and a woman came in completely IRATE! She wanted to return a Madonna cassette. It was completely marked and packaged as Madonna, but it was "Eat "Em and Smile" on the tape. And it was an obvious manufacturing error because the tape had the tones, CBS I think, used to put at the beginning of the recording. She was pissed when I laughed but I bought it from her.

Steve Vai is Dave's guitarist. He had a 3-necked, heart-shaped guitar, that you see in Dave's video for "Just Like Paradise", off the "Skyscraper" album. Steve has a solo song called "The Audience is Listening", that will absolutely melt your face and blow your hair off.
