I do the same with my native language. I guess the youtube algorithm supposes english is all our first language and that we’re interested in learning about our native language ))

In fact there was an old verb ять which meant 'to take'. It has fallen out of use but its derivatives still exist. They are formed with an inserted н between the prefix and the stem. These verbs have a strange conjugation owing to the fact that the vowel now written я was formerly a nasalised vowel, a bit like French "an".

@@frenchimp didnt know about that, interesting, although i did know that a lot of these relatively newer verbs the н in нять comes from an н that would be inserted with the с prefix meaning away. But over time it got reanalyzed as с + нять instead of с + ять & hence came all the the prefixed нять verbs

There is no such verb as нять in Russian. Nothing to do with to take or any other english verb. All verbs with -нять are different ones absolutely.

I don't understand your explanation. The stem ять is an old verb which meant 'to take'. That explains the meaning of its derivatives, to the extent that prefixes have a more or less well defined meaning or rather spectrum of meaning...

Взял напрокат = "rented" sounds more right to the ear of the native speaker. But you can use "снял" = "rented", you will be understood by context. It just a verb of two meanings. Снял = "took off" is the regular verb for any cloth (or accessories). Also Снял = "rented" is always used for rent apartments. And one more - снял = "take a photo" = сфотографировал, but the second one is used more often.

Снял is used with living places only. Я арендовал костюм - I rented a suit Я снял костюм - I took a suit off

That's a coincidence. The word with the actual prefix would be внять (it's a kinda outdated) and there is a noun внимание (means attention and it isn't outdated)

That's fucking BS. There is no suffix "ять", there is such infinitive ending. But in words which are like prefix + ня + ending (+ postfix); prefix + ня is a counted as a root (because there is no ня without a prefix) and ять is not an ending. Come on, you can just look it up in Wiktionary; for example, снять: Из с- + -нять, далее от праслав. *jьmǫ : jęti от кот. в числе прочего произошли: др.-русск., ст.-слав. имѣти, имамь, а также възѩти, възьмѫ. or отнять: Происходит от рус. XI-XVII вв. отънѧти, отъѩти, из праслав. *otjęti, приставочного производного от праслав. *jьmǫ : jęti, от кот. в числе прочего произошли: др.-русск., ст.-слав. имѣти, имамь, а также възѩти, възьмѫ. @@olegpetrovskiy1583 the thing is, tion - is an affix, a modificator, but -ня(ть) is an actual root which *is modified* , *not* modifies, it just can't be used without modificator (prefix), that's why that prefix is counted as a part of a root.
