Rob Holmes is a private investigator. He works with major luxury-watch brands to track down fakes and stop them from getting to market.
Holmes speaks with Business Insider about how counterfeits are made in factories overseas. He gives details about how fake luxury goods are trafficked into the United States and distributed to consumers, tells us how the counterfeit industry has evolved with the rise of a new generation of "superfakes," and gives advice about how to spot a counterfeit. He also examines a genuine Rolex, and gives tips on how to spot a genuine watch.
Holmes began investigating counterfeits during his childhood: his father, Robert Sr., was a renowned counterfeit investigator in New York in the 1980s. Holmes describes his dad's encounters with Chinatown gangs and tells Business Insider how he and his brother are carrying on their father's legacy through their investigations business, MI:33.

As we were preparing to publish this video, a representative from Customs and Border Protection wrote in an email: "Trade in counterfeit and pirated goods threatens America's innovation economy, the competitiveness of our businesses, the livelihoods of U.S. workers, and, in some cases, national security and the health and safety of consumers. CBP targets and seizes imports of counterfeit and pirated goods, and enforces exclusion orders on patent-infringing and other IPR violative goods. CBP's interdiction efforts begin well before a conveyance or shipment arrives at a port. Advance electronic shipping information, actionable intelligence, and information sharing partnerships are critical components that enable us to quickly identify, target, and deter the entry of counterfeit and dangerous goods, including illicit drugs, in all operational environments. Advance information is a critical and effective component of CBP's targeting and interdiction efforts."

I went to NYC last month and you can walk up and down time squares and see several guys with large suitcases full of fake purses, hand bags and sunglasses all with the big brands logos. They lay it all on a blanket and try to sell them as the real stuff. Lots of times it will be 3-4 ppl next to each other selling. Cops just a few feet away not doing anything.

They're called "Super Clones" not "Epic Fakes" And the grey market isn't watches that fell off of a truck. It's mostly pre-owned watches sold by non-authorized dealers. Some even in brand new condition because someone bought directly from Rolex and went to sell it to a grey market dealer for a profit. What kind of "expert" is this?

To give him the benefit of the doubt, he did say terminology constantly changes to avoid detection. And that his undercover need to look like fools to actually get a fake. If he seemed like he knew too much a dealer might be hesitant to sell to him. He might be using old terminology on purpose or is using the terminology most prevalent 10-20 years ago. "Epic Fakes" definitely sounds like slang people in the early 2000s would use. The word epic was literally used everywhere. Slang also is different in each state

This is just embarrassing. He works for the watch brands so of course he's going to lie and misrepresent facts for them. The issue of forced or child labor is a China issue, has nothing to do with counterfeit watches, even Apple and Nike has the issue. Guy is citing a story from 30 years ago about swapping gold for gold plated then claims it's common today so only use authorized dealers - this is no different is Ford claimed only they can fix your car and anyone else will cause your wheels to fall off. The assessment if the watch is real is out of date, good counterfeits today are impossible to tell from real unless you remove the case back.
@sterlingross919
@sterlingross919 24 күн бұрын
Just because that happened twenty-plus years ago doesn’t mean jewelers don’t still do it. It’s pretty common. The other issue with taking a watch to a non-authorized repair location is the second it’s opened by someone unauthorized the entire value of the watch gets wiped out. If you buy a $60k Patek Philippe brand new and take it to a jeweler to get it iced out in $40k worth of diamonds, that watch is only going to be worth $40k.
@TheRealCartman1
@TheRealCartman1 24 күн бұрын
@@sterlingross919 you claim "it's pretty common" like this "expert" but cite no recent examples. Having a watch serviced by someone who isn't authorized doesn't wipe out the entire value as long as they know what they are doing.
@ctdieselnut

@@sterlingross919 the second the back is removed by someone unauthorized, it's worthless, seems like some pretentious nonsense on par with john deer/right to repair (oh, if farmers fix their own tractors like they have been doing for a 100 yrs, they'll be unsafe and everyone will die. Just like the ford example above). Gate keeping, profit protecting garbage. Can some idiot screw up a watch, sure. But it's a watch, no ones life depends on it working (and the supposedly highest quality watches are sometimes notoriously inaccurate and unreliable anyway). Just my opinion, I'm not an expert.

TIL that Louis Vuitton is a big watch brand, and that Super Clones are called Epic Fakes all within the first 90 seconds of the video. Where did you find this guy? Grey Market watches are refused to service? lol, like you can't just say "I bought that on a trip to ". A watch is a watch and they can be serviced by any decent watchmaker/jeweler. "You need a magnifying glass to tell if it's a clone" and then confidently announces a watch as genuine using his naked eye.
@ccoder4953
@ccoder4953 25 күн бұрын
And from what I've seen of the super clones, even if you have a magnifier you really can't tell. Maybe if you are extremely experienced or have a genuine one to compare directly to, but not even 100% sure then. But otherwise, the quality of a good super clone can be so impeccable, the average person won't be able to tell, even with magnification.
@ionlawrence4401
@ionlawrence4401 25 күн бұрын
Most clones needs to be opened to see if they are real. There are legit brands making Rolex designs with their own branding(Steelfish, San Martin, etc) that matches the Rolex build quality and specs on everything but the movement. The difference is that these brands charge $2-400. A good "fake" has all the properties of a Rolex, but it´s just not made by them. Just like the cost of an LV bag is $20. LV really is making good watches, but they are not a watch brand, and isn´t gonna be counted as such.

She said, this battery regardless of brand costs $10 and the BS about it only being opened by that brand is to make money. Fast forward 25yrs , Patek, Tiffany, Baumé&Mercier, A.Piguet all go to a local guy who works on my pieces in front of me in a shitty strip mall. He charges 1/10 the price. I’ve gone to him so long that he doesn’t even charge me for battery replacement anymore.

That was my thought exactly. How can a civilian just break into someone else's store and "confiscate" (i.e. steal) their stuff? Even cops need a warrant in most cases. Then again, I'm not American, maybe there you can just call your gang "Investigators" and go play cops and nobody minds. This guy is faker than those $5 watches. The "$200.000 price on my dad's head" sounds like a complete BS, and he obviously has no clue about watches. I would be surprised if anything that he talks about is true.

The quality control of real watch makers creates massive rejected parts which significantly increases the cost. The precision of all the parts is so high that there is a considerable number of parts (a mechanical watch contains hundreds or thousands of invidivual parts) that are rejected due to minor manufacturing flaws. Counterfeit products can crank out cheap goods because they don't have this level of QC. The accuracy of and Omega (+/- 1 second a week) verses a Sieko (+/- 8 seconds a day) is why the former cost 10x the latter. A cheap knockoff is not only inaccurate, but it will probably die after a few months, and is almost guaranteed to not be as waterproof as an orignal.

what is this guy saying. First of all, the high quality copies are Super Clones, not Epic Fakes, that is a term no one in the industry uses. Also they dont use the same machines, they use similar types, but not the same, as Rolex, Patek, and others have their own custom equipment. Also what he said it not the "Grey Market, that in the Black Market. Grey Market are legit second hand watch dealers, may times Jewelers, selling real watches second hand because they are not authorized retailers. They are actually regulated in the US and most countries (under trade laws they are regulated, they all are insured, bonded, etc), to ensure the watches aren't stolen, and they would not be able to do "mixing", those are underground black market dealers, not Grey Market. And a lot of those things he describes of the black market, hasnt existed in 20+years It is also false that the brands do not like the secondhand Grey Market, Rolex actually encourages it. In fact the largest Grey Market seller in the world is owned by Richmont, a major watch company that owns brands like IWC, Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, and others. Most repair shops are honest, it is very rare to find ones like he describes anymore, not for years. It is a small industry, and everyone knows each other. Also what called "Franken Watches" is not what Franken Watches are. Franken Watches are watches made from mismatched parts by a trained horologist to recycle parts from older broken watches. They are very obviously such watches, and never met a dealer who tried to pass off one as real. For an alleged expert, he knows so little about the industry he is talking about

I worked at Intel until 2007. Expensive labor drove our manufacturing to Puerto Rico, then Malaysia, then China. Chinese factories made our product legitimately during the day, then made knockoffs at night by paying the police to stay away. On more than one occasion, we received phone calls from US Customs in Memphis who suspected a shipment to be counterfeit. Pre-production integrated circuits was a dead giveaway. We also added features in the production printed circuit board that looked innocuous to the untrained eye. Every case was a "deal" made by a wholesaler in the gray market. Chinese steal because the rest of the world stole paper, gunpowder, and other technology without compensating them. Bribery is expected.

The gold Rolex Datejust he’s examining at around 15 minutes into the film he claims is maybe 20 years old! But It clearly has an acrylic crystal which has a moulded cyclops and no anti reflective coating, and a Tritium dial which were no longer used after 1997 - so that watch is at least 30 -40 years old and possibly more. He assumes it’s genuine on the basis of the quality of the Rolex coronet yet could just as easily be a franken (although perhaps unlikely), and a franken watch is one that is made of a mix of parts both genuine and counterfeit, or one that is solely made from genuine parts but was never a complete watch to begin with.
