Congratulations in facing a common fear: criticism. We all have it. You made yourself vulnerable and that take a ton of courage. Easier to ignore the comments. I congratulations for your bravery. I enjoyed watching your process at trying to correct or improve a project. I don't have a lot of $$$ to spend on projects, and appreciated seeing how you stayed with it. It appears from your video that the tops of the legs are fully rounded. By moving the legs slightly inward you can get away with rounding only the inward corner thus having the table rest on a flat surface ( half the width of the leg ) rather than a single point. Much sturdier.

That was enjoyable to watch. Rather than just say, 'there was an issue, this is how I fixed it'. You actually showed the various things you tried (and failed) which many KZfaq channels would edit out. Very clear and concise video, good editing, no annoying background music and everything you spoke about and showed was easy to understand. You have a new subscriber! Wish you well with future videos and projects.

Hey Thomas--I've been wanting to comment on your plans for a while now, and this seems like the best time. I've purchased 4 of the 5 workshop bundle plans you offer on your Etsy site (I guess I should've just purchased your bundle option instead of buying them one at a time--who knew I would like your plans so well!) and every one of them have been winners, as far as I'm concerned. Your plans are well-produced by whatever app you use for your measured drawings, and your comprehensive step-by-step narratives make them superior to those of most other competitors I've ever purchased and tried to use. The Folding Workbench is the first of your projects that I've built and to be honest, I have no idea what wobble the naysayers are referring to, as I've experienced nothing but sturdy, solid performance from mine. Granted, I made mine slightly longer and wider and decided to use different casters on the legs, but your general design was preserved, and I think it is a tank and will serve me well for years to come! Keep your chin up, grow from any constructive criticism your receive and just disregard the rude trolls out there who never seem to have the nerve, motivation or ability to put themselves out there and produce anything themselves. Oh yeah, and get busy and create some more projects for me to build!

Good on ya for taking the constructive criticism on the chin and solving the problem. Also, showing your failures along the way helps the rest of us mere mortals that not everything on KZfaq is perfect and easy. I have videos on my channel where I fit parts to my motorbike and I show all the problems along the way as well, and I get comments thanking me for my honesty. When I watch other more popular motorbike channels doing the same job, I can see the sneaky edits where they cut out all the knuckle scraping and swearing. There's nothing more demoralizing for people than when they try to do something they've seen on KZfaq and it doesn't go as smoothly as the guy in the video does it. It's a thumbs up and a subscribe from me. 👍

(I can see that you've uploaded quite a few videos, and I WILL get round to viewing them.) One thing that particularly impressed me, sir, is that once you'd received a 1 star review on a purchased plan for the workbench, you didn't immediately jump to a defensive stance but took time to think about how you could improve matters. To me, that says more about you as a person. 👍 I agree with you, sir, that constructive criticism SHOULD be favoured [favored, for you, my brother, as you're American] over simply people not even considering what you've gone through to develop a product/build, and simply 'throwing out' negative comments. Triangles do work, discovered this back in the 1970’s when making legs for my Model Railway portable layout using folding triangles to keep the 2 legs upright. Ok I was not using them for a workbench but the boards were pretty stable. Glad you discovered the solution for your bench. Challenge now is to make it so that you do not need to unscrew the bolts to take the triangle off the legs! Bit of a clue, 2 off length triangles that couple to the centre if the bench.

Great video. It is helpful to see the creative process. The first half of this video is a study of how parallelograms work. It doesn’t matter how many beams you add, the parallelogram will still act like a parallelogram. As you found out, one cross brace can fix a lot. Two, making an X, will do even more.

That’s how we all learn. Most people just don’t post about their mistakes, that’s why your video is important! 2 things I may suggest: Take away the middle beam and see if the table stays sturdy enough. Only thing I see could happen is that the legs without the diagonal between them could flex. That only happens when you put force at the ends of the legs which normally won’t happen during working on the top of the bench. Second thing is: in my opinion the bolts of the diagonal beam should be always fixed on the legs, also when the diagonal beam is dismounted. That way you don’t need hold the beam in place exactly where the holes line up while putting the bolt through the hole. You just stick the beam onto the bolts and after that apply the nuts. Wing nuts are perfect there because in that spot it’s less about torque but more about the bolt not falling out.
@sambafamba
@sambafamba 8 ай бұрын
A third thing as a bonus: put two diagonals to the legs on the shorter sides of the table. I’m saying this because the same reason why the table is unstable on thy longer side should apply to the shorter sides…
@sambafamba

Funny thing is: the reason I clicked on your channel is a short by you were you claimed you table was sturdy because of the middle beam. I was like no way and was happy to discover this video 😂

My only beef with your solution is it makes the setup and teardown much less convenient. Something that can fold up like the legs would be better. How about something that hinged off the center table stretcher that could pivot down and connect to the lower leg stretcher? I have a table like this and will give it a try
@ThomasCustomWoodworks
@ThomasCustomWoodworks 6 ай бұрын
Great idea. I went with this solution because since it is tightly bolted to the legs there is no more wobble. Something that is easier to tear down would not give it as much stability. I see your point though.

I like this idea. I want to make one the width of the inside of my minivan. I can use it as a shelf for lighter, long tools that I need easy access to. I can put a channel rail on both sides of the van above my heavy power tools. I can then have extended bolts on the table slide through the rails. This will give me easily removable shelf storage for my van and a worktable for my jobsite. Maybe I can build a ripfence for it, add a few dog holes and dovetail tracks for flush clamps, make a notch plate to undermount a circular saw, jigsaw, and router... Crap. This won't be light enough to carry over my shoulder. Maybe I should just make a worktop and screw it down onto folding sawhorses or something.

Ensure that the legs have no loose play when they are erected. Snug them right into the corners, and add drilled blocks to align the pivot bolts on both sides of the legs. Then, make your notched bar a little longer to put tension on the legs. That should solve the problem.

Looked at this because I need to make a similar size existing super solid rollable workbench foldable for van & I detest wobble (weight rating of wheels 1200kg 4x4 legs). Constructive? Thoughts: Single pin for leg attachment seems iffy for super heavy I want the leg to support to the top (I intend to use a hardwood spacer with pearling screws into the frame, so it is also supporting the frame firmly), I sincerely hope I can get away with large hinges routed in so they sit flush. Cross bracing (I will need to do this like it or not (not currently cross braced, its "solid") but wonder for speed could you use a sliding pin / bolt at one end and a jig at the other (probable Jig at both ends with pin lock). I've have adjustable (dont know the proper name) clamps (screw on loop & hook) which lock, I'd been thinking of using those to lock the legs out against the frame (90% a fail due to flex in hinge etc..) but even so they're great for tightening things down and quick release. My big issue is weight.. it's a heavy table especially with super heavy castors etc.. Worth noting I have a wood vice (2nd in line coming soon) at one end & my top is sacrificial so the frame must be stand alone. All in all, loved the vid & comments looks like a nice workbench (but I think the single pin leg is a definite weakness which could be strengthened by either my experimental hinge system or fixing at both ends). I can rip a full sheet of board on my worktop (TS55, love it). Large metalwork vice clamps solidly via 3 hole & board system to other end.

Great tip! I made the center brace wide enough so it would hold it at 90 degrees and it did apply outward pressure when it was first built. The legs loosened a little over time which created the gap, so the center brace isn’t applying outward pressure anymore unfortunately.

I would have made a rotating peg kinda thing instead, and a indentation for it to slide into, or a 3D printed or wooden attachment for it to slide into and block movement. Is that not enough? I feel like the extra piece you made here solved your issue but also makes it more of a hassle to work with the table, sadly. But if you don't have to put it up often, it's ok.

So I have a question. Does this design work if you need to make it larger? Specifically 6' x 4'???
@ThomasCustomWoodworks
@ThomasCustomWoodworks 2 ай бұрын
Yes, you can make this table larger with this design.

Just an idea not sure if it would work, maybe a gas spring shock, like what they have on car hoods and suv trunks.

The real problem with these foldable-bench-up-on-wall benches is that they take up a ton of usable wall space. Might as well fold it and leave it on the floor against the wall.
@ThomasCustomWoodworks
@ThomasCustomWoodworks 7 ай бұрын
Yes, they do take up space on the wall but for me, I hadn’t needed this wall space for 3 years so I didn’t mind this being here. It will depend on the person but I understand your point.

Why not cut your radiation on just the inter side of leg tops to where when opened they would be solid braced against the outside table frame making it tight when the removable lower brace was put in place. ???

I have one suggestion for you. Try to shorten this video as much as possible and see what you can accomplish. Apply the results to one of your next videos. Say the bare minimum without skimping on clarity of explanation. Keep up the good work. I like that you wanted to do this cheaply. Helps other DIYers for sure!

I don't understand the point of the shade being thrown at Drew Wit (whoever he is) randomly in the middle of the video. It wasn't even topical, just seemed petty. Anyway, it's commendable that you actually took the criticism and did something constructive with it. There are a lot of people out there who simply don't have that capability.

Nice fix. And thanks for telling us how cheaply made your videos are. I do find it a guilty pleasure to watch you guys though, because I was berated throughout my apprenticeship until I became proficient. So, if you think you don't like comments on KZfaq, be glad you didn't grow up under the tutelage of WWII vets on a jobsite.

Honestly, the constant complaining about other KZfaqrs is tacky. Maybe that's why you're not getting the views you want. Woodworkers especially don't care about how much money you spend. We just like watching good building.

I see your channel is relatively new, so here's one piece of advice: you have to grow a thicker skin. I don't mean it as an insult, you'll encounter nasty trolls through your online career, and if you let them get to you, they'll just double down.
