Coney recounts a tale where he entered a Blockbuster; for most of you zoomers, a Blockbuster is essentially a Netflix store but bad. Coney talks about his adventure of seeing Super Mario 64 for the first time, the dangers of losing a game manual, and the quest of hunting a rare game.

Man Coney's mom is a real one. Single mom, working weekends, drove around for three fucking hours to seven different Blockbusters just so her kid could rent the specific game he wanted.

I was 9 years old in 2015 when the Mewtwo Amiibo came out. My dad worked a corporate job, worked his way from filing cabinets to the top accountant in the building. So he was a very busy guy. If you remember anything about early Amiibo from I would say 2013-2015, you remember that there were some Amiibo's that were very hard to find at launch. As a kid without the Smash 4 DLC, I thought by putting the Mewtwo Amiibo into the game, it would unlock Mewtwo for me to play as. I remember asking my dad to go to drive me to Walmart to find it. The thing is, the Mewtwo Amiibo was considered hard to find at launch. Hard enough that when there was none at our closest Walmart I asked him to go try again at the second closest place. My dad, on basically his only day off for the next 2-3 weeks (I Forget if it was 2 or 3) drove me to 6 Walmart's until we found one with 2 in stock. I was so happy. Ofc it unfortunately did not give me Mewtwo to play as. But I had Mewtwo. My dad died the next year in all things at a pretty young age, I was 10. I now have over 70 Amiibo. I will not only appreciate him for finding that love for collecting, but more importantly appreciate him for taking his one day off to help me and my little quest to find a 13 dollar toy. Fun little fact: this quest was the first time I said a curse word. Out of frustration after 3 Walmart's did not have a Mewtwo Amiibo. I said "Damn It" to which my dad promptly scolded me. Edit. TLDR: My dad took me to 6 Walmart's to find the rare Mewtwo Amiibo and it's one of my fondest memories I have with him.

I had this on my speakers while my mom was eating lunch nearby, and she thought the story pacing was very cohesive/engaging plus she remembers enduring the "checking all nearby blockbusters within miles for a certain game" with us back in the day. She was highly entertained and laughing during this. This was a wonderful piece of content, content man

Back when cartridges held your saved data, the old school Blockbuster strategy if you wanted to make sure you could continue to rent the same copy, was to mark the generic Blockbuster cases with a marker. This was the only way I was able to get 120 stars in Mario 64 the summer of 97, cause I didn't own the game. PS1 Blockbuster era was crazy cause you could finally keep your saved data for everything you played.

This gathering of stories is pulling my brain back all the way back to my childhood (I’m only a year older than Coney). I forgot how mindblowingly exciting seeing Earthworm Jim 2 for the first time as a kid, and I definitely remember being in SHOCK with seeing Mario 64 demo booths at stores. The one I remember most was seeing a demo for PilotWings 64 at a Barnes & Noble. It was so BEAUTIFUL and COLORFUL, even in comparison to Mario 64.

Blockbuster had this summer movie program where you paid like $10 a month and you could just always have one movie checked out. On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday nights my dad and I would go swap the last movie we watched for a new one and then go to the local CVS and buy movie snacks since neither of us knew how to cook well. Good times.

This video gave me a new appreciation for parents driving us around on wonderful journeys to get the games we wanted. My dad drove me to an EBGames (canadian gamestop before they rebranded after the whole WSB thing) 20km away to get me a copy of Mario and Luigi Dream Team after we found that the one near us didn't have the game. He forced my sister to come with us too, who whined about it the whole time while I was happy as a clam. He's such a real one

I miss game displays like that n64 one, I don't go to game stores very often anymore so they're of no use to me. But kids these days won't get the joy of walking into a blockbuster, or a gamestop, and seeing a new console or game just available to play. The ultimate ones were the ones in Walmarts, got to play for like an hour while my parents wandered the store, the only time I've ever actually been excited to get groceries. I feel like I haven't seen em at all since the Wii U era and even then they weren't very common

I loved BlockBuster. Yeah it was flawed, but it holds a special place in my heart. I remember when I was 6 years old*, my family went to BlockBuster. While we were there I wandered into the games aisle by accident, and I saw Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for Nintendo Wii on the shelf. As a kid, I loved Star Wars, so I asked my mom if we could rent it. That was the first game I ever felt compelled to play through to the end. I was so sad when we had to return the game that I actually asked my mom if we could rent it again. It wasn’t my first video game or anything, nor is it my favorite game, but that moment is something I’ll never forget as long as I live. R.I.P. BlockBuster :(

I experienced the same thing with the joystick, but on a different console. I thought the joystick on the PSP was a speaker. So I was playing Midnight club 3: dub edition on the PSP, but I could not turn. Only by fiddling around with it was I able to turn, but I can't imagine doing that as a kid at the store while your Mom is begging you to leave. I still have the Psp and that game. Cool video man. Made me more thankful for my mom because she too also goes above and beyond for me. The ending got me when you said he returned the 1080 snowboard game.

My Blockbuster story is when I was a kid, I was maybe 4, I was wearing a hat my sister had bought at Claires or something that had a little piece of magnetic tape in it. Like the weird sticky security sticker that you find in clamshell electronics. It beep beep beep'd the sensors; and the manager lady demanded that she take me into the back room to strip search me. My Dad wasn't having any of it, and the lady was adamant I had to take my clothes off for her. So she called the cops. My Dad knew the cops, and the cop basically told the lady she was crazy, my Dad took my hat off and made me walk through the sensor, and it didn't beep beep beep. She didn't apologize, and we started going to Hollywood Video instead.
