That 20-60mm is such a great little lens! It's light and compact and so versatile. I wouldn't swap it for a 24-70 even at f2.8 because it's such a great range. The 20mm at the wide end means you can get shots that you could not get with 24mm, and if you need 70mm you can just crop in a teeny bit in post.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn Жыл бұрын
100% agree - the 24-70 wouldn't be worth it to me because of how huge it is along with the lack of an ultra-wide end. I absolutely adore 20mm.

I have similar camera journey like You Nolan. Started with G85, then added speedbooster with sigma 18-35, then tried gh5,then Canon 90D and now have Panasonic S5 with 24-105 f4 ;) and its hard to go back ... :)) Panasonic G85 is a great and super compact tool, but S5 gives you so much more and image that comes out of this camera is beautiful. Your channel is great and cant wait to see your next video !! Best From Canada.

Picked up my S5 yesterday and am going on my first shoot with it tomorrow. Coming from a GH5 which has been an absolute beast of a camera for my workflow, I'm really excited to get stuck in with the S5 and finally have that glorious full-frame sensor. Thank you for this quick summary; it helped me to decide to purchase the S5 rather than the A7S iv.

congratulations on the video and the camera my brother,The lumix s5 was my first full frame camera, I've had it for a year and this camera is really good, easy to use, good photos, great video quality, great stabilization compared to competitors, but… the auto focus is a problem for those who are not a professional filmmaker lol, so I didn't invest much in lenses, I only have the kit lens and a lumix 50mm 1.8, but because of the auto focus I ended up getting the Sony a7iv 4 months ago. In short, Panasonic can dominate the market if they improve their auto focus in the next cameras, because they have everything good, except what most people need which is an auto focus for their videos.

Thank you so much for the video!! I've been hunting for the right camera, torn between the GH6, S5, or A7C, but I really want that 4k60 and Log. I'm not a huge fan of sticking to m4/3 for the long run though so GH6 may be out. One thing I'm ify about compromising on is autofocus though but might be worth it for the open gate (since it's becoming more important on different social media platforms). Anyways the video helped a lot! I related to all the struggles when shopping in this price range haha.

I bought mine when it just came out, based on image quality and what it offered on paper for the price in comparison to other brands. I had previously only used Canon and Sony and as time goes I cant be happier I bought the S5. So far from a few months with my S5 I think the AF is usable especially for most low stakes KZfaq stuff as long as you aren’t doing camera oriented videos most people are pixel peeping and won’t notice. Also if you ever truly want full frame 4k 60 the Ninja V is a great option out there plus no records limits so worth it for anyone who truly needs those

I’ve had the S5 for about a month an a half I came from using the EOS R. I honestly thought I was going to regret it because of the AF but I’ve been pleasantly surprised I’ve shot mainly in autofocus since I’ve gotten it and for the most part it’s worked for what I need it to do. IMO there’s no hybrid full frame camera in its price point that can beat it. Great review sir!

I ordered the s5 to go along with my gh5s. They seem to overlap in the right areas. The s5 provides stabilization and that full framed look while my gh5s will provide more codecs and a full sized hdmi port. I'm curious how color grading will go matching shots for two camwra shoots.

@@NolanGunn I think it is the way people see it to,5 or more years ago the autofocus of the S5 would have been called perfect and the camera would have been selling like hot cakes but being released in 2021 the S5 has alot of competition and almost all the videos people on KZfaq put up about it name and shame the Contrast based system for being "outdated" and they say there are better options out there like the R5/6 and sony A7SIII for auto focus. I believe though in a world of new technology coming out every day people expect things to get better, to improve on and over the predecessors when a company chooses to not do something like the competition not to upgrade not to advance they create something worth remembering which in the S5's case is showing people that manual focus is ok and they should not rely on autofocus for everything. Autofocus has it's place but should not become a must for every situation.

Dude, I am not a photographer nor a cinematographer, but since I started shooting with VLOG, I will never go back. Additionally, using the G95, thanks to your G85 review, I now opened up new ways of color grading in dancing, I can easily get the look (mood) I want. I still struggle with focus tho given I am a 1 person crew if I am too far from the camera it's hard to get it fix in post. I also recently stumbled on the the Nicest LUT, it's great if you want natural color just like you did here. But for now I am not using any LUT, jut playing with Davinci until I lock in a certain look of my own. 3 days ago I check out the GH5 which might be my next upgrade but before I do, I really have to exhaust the potential of the G95. Still my favorite so far.

This is an awesome! I can tell it's a real-world review from a videographer that actually shoots with the S5. I'm coming from the A7 III and I love the lens selection but do get drawn to the S5 for it's 10bit and colour. I previously had a G7 with the 12-35 but had OIS jitter issues with the lens. How have the full frame lenses been for OIS and Autofocus? Keep up the great content! 🎥

Thanks so much Zack! The A73 is great, my brother in law has one and it's killer 👌 To answer your question: The stabilization is "good enough" - much better then the A73 but not as good as the G85 and GH5. I'm happy to do light handheld moving shots with it, but never walking or technical hand held shots. Autofocus has surprised me! With native lenses (this video's shot of me is the 20-60 @35mm using autofocus and it never lost me) I've had really good luck. It's not perfect, but for low-pressure talking head stuff it's been great.

I’ve been using the S5 and the S1 since April before that the XT4 and XH1 with all the pro zooms and primes. Same sentiments, I missed the full frame from way back in the 5D2 days (now that’s a camera with horrible AF lol). People complain too much about the Panasonic AF, but it’s really not that bad. We were using LUMIX AF back in 2012/13 for for KZfaq education it wasn’t bad. I think the S5 and S1 are fantastic. Especially that you can get 6k. I was kinda waiting for the XH2s but look at the price!!! It’s wild. I got the S1 with 24-105 for sub 2k on ebay and it came with the VLOG upgrade. Can’t beat that! Now I’m using the 24-105 , 70-200 f4, 16-35, 35 1.8, 50 1.8 and 20-60. When it comes to photography…. It hits more in focus shots than the XT4 does and that’s shooting sports. @@tobyr8555 the 20-60 is ok, but it’s a kit zoom. It’s not BAD but it has its place like vlogging and small video work. Other lenses are much better but purposeful. 20-60 isn’t going to give great portraits or macros but it’s a good lens. Weight wise it’s fantastic with the S5. The S1 is a tank and I only use it when shooting professional work. The S5 I use for video stuff a lot and personal use especially when traveling. I still use it professionally too. It’s good to remember it’s a 35mm sensor so everything weighs more. I now have the 16-35, 24-105, 70-200 4, 50 1.8, 35 1.8

Absolutely! I would recommend picking up Panasonic’s utility LUTs. Start with “like709” at 90% and then if you want a more contrast tone you can use the “nicest709” for a different look. They are on Panasonics website if you Google it. Just shoot a lot of footage in different scenarios - practice overexposing, underexposing, etc and then see how they act in your editer so you can see what the footage does what it does. Usually for log you’re looking at exposing to the right - AKA +1 or +2 on your meter.

Ive only owned m43 and apsc (Fuji), but looking at a ton of S5 footage, there really does seem to be consistently a "full frame look" thats hard to quantify, that I have a hard time achieving with my X-S10 that ive been shooting on for two years. Im thinking its the sum of several superior parts: DOF/IQ/IBIS - very tempting for me to make the switch as well given the price of S5s in my area. Portability is huge for me, so thats the only thing holding me back at this point.

@@NolanGunn To be clear it's the same depth of field (DOF) at the same distance - exactly the same as taking a 1.5x crop from the full frame. The DOF difference is only relevant when you want the same framing as the full frame. If you stand the same distance from the subject you will be shooting 20mm at full frame and 30mm at crop (tighter on the subject) but with the same DOF. Altrnatively you would need to shoot at 1.5 times the distance (approx) from the subject to have the same amount in the frame with the crop mode but you end up with a deeper depth of field.

The reason full frame will always have that special look is because the larger sensor size simultaneously creates a larger area that can be in focus while the background can still be just as blurry. Hard to drescribe that in depth but basically it almost gives the impression that the subjects and world is actually smaller. My explanation there probably makes no sense, but basically there is a defferent style of focus that cant be recreated just by having a faster lens or an adapter

Don't forget the S1H gets the Netflix seal of approval for the color depth and the 400 mbs data rate, which , if you shoot into the Ninja, RAW gives you that standard, plus 2 more full "bits" of color, 12 bit color! The Ninja V would be the next purchase I would advise any one who got this rig with the kit lens. You've got to have a decent monitor, anyway. Good luck with the Chanel.

@@NolanGunn You will find the Ninja V for $399 on Amazon. Then you will need a couple of good batteries, a mount, a good HDMI cable and a flash drive. $150 would cover that. (WD Blue SSD's are currently around the $100 mark and work great) Don't forget, though, RAW video files are massive and take up a tonne of hard drive space. When I put my 1TB flash drive on the Ninja it tells me I only have about 56 minutes recording time! You get 4 hours when you switch to Prores HQ instead of RAW. Which goes back to 10 bit color. Which is still great, but just to say, it's great having RAW, but only use it on really important shoots, clients, or your own short films. The Prores files are still amazing and in general I will mix between Prores and Prores RAW on a shoot, only using the RAW where I am worried I will need more latitude in post. The sensor in the S5 is the same sensor as the S1H as you know and it shares the color science on the Arris. The Prores HQ images that come out of that camera are top of the line, brother. It is hands down the single best deal in town by far. Happy shooting.

I have the GH5 and S5 and love both of them, although for pro work my A-car hands down the s5 every time. You touched on the “full frame” look and said you put your finger on it. There’s a few things in play when it comes to sensor size that’s creating a more pleasing image. Things like yes, a larger sensor wields a wider FoV which means you use tighter lenses creating more lens compression that helps with more bokeh and less distortion when taking portraits. However I think the thing you can’t put your finger one is simply the better image quality. The larger sensor with 24mp compared to the 20mp means the pixels are larger on the S5, giving them the ability to capture better quality light. It helps with colour and dynamic range. The roll of from the highlights to shadows tends to be a touch smoother and more pleasing. And of course an overall cleaner image especially when pushing that ISO! The GH5 is still a beast to this day but damn the larger sensor just greats better image quality!

I’ve been using the S5 (>90% stills, the rest is videos) for 1.5 years and, if the video performance of the camera is considered only, there was hardly any reason to “upgrade” to this camera from my old G9 (I refer to my both comparisons “S5 vs G9” on my channel). Even for photos, the S5’s Jpegs directly from the camera have hardly better DR, but very poor colors in comparison to the G9! The reasons why I switched to the S5 were better RAWs (even here the advantage is incremental) and definitely more details (probably due to 24 megapixel) depicted.

"do you think everyone should get an S5?" is what you asked (?). No. If you do lots of shots and vid in the mountains with two cameras a pile of lens and a drone and drone batteries... small format sensor cameras (marketed as 'full frame') start to quickly look like a less than steller performance in terms of physical work. But perhaps you are young and healthy whereas some (amateur/professional) photographers are either oldish or not as healthy. Different use cases, right 👍 Nolan you say that price is very important to you thus keeping you away from certain cameras. What about people who have less money than you? Better a less expensive APSC or MFT camera with some lenses, eh? Also, if YOU went "full frame" why stop there? If I wanted to get a bigger sensor .. then small format is just a cropped sensor compared with digital medium format, right? So, price aside, what was stopping you getting say a Fujifilm GFX 50s...a medium format camera in a small format body? 🤔 (You asked for comments.) You should also realize that I have considered an S5 but instead went for an additional MFT camera body this year to make more efficient use of my existing lenses...there is an argument there too. I enjoy following your channel and I wish you great success with your gear, whatever system you have and use.

@@NolanGunn hi again. I am a university professor in env studies who during the pandemic pre-recorded some lectures using my G80 (your G85) and now with a G9 I have two cameras to use for maybe doing interviews as part of classes (recorded videos) or can record from two directions and then edit together in post if I want. Given what students were otherwise 2020-2022 seeing over Zoom most of my students loved the video quality (8 bit ungraded but at least it wasn't a webcam!) and the audio and... since I filmed sometimes at a location (not home, not in the office) that dovetailed into the lecture subject students found my productions incredibly engaging. For my needs, get everything more or less right while filming, I don't have time for color grading 10-bit color even if I had had it in the past, and incredibly satisfied students (and instructor). Plus since content was being seen seldom on a screen larger than 14inches and extremely seldom seen on screens with better resolution 1920*1080 what is the point of "an upgrade"...and I don't want massive video files causing lag on possible poor internet connections with the students... then "inferior" MFT 8-bit is more than good enough (?). In a few years I will be 60. The internet has plenty of testimonials from oldish people who lugged full Canon and Nikon kits for decades and switched to Olympus/OM, Panasonic Lumix or even Fujifilm .. JOY returned to their photography and the videos they make. You may experience this some day too 😉 btw yes I would have to augment my MFT kit if I took up filming night time orienteering competitions in the woods in the rain... (I exaggerated to prove a point) but 95/100 times or more my MFT gear works great for my use case. The best camera is the one your have with you, you know how to use, and you (and others) are happy with the results. So have you ditched the G85? But perhaps I am mistaken but didn't you ask like half a year ago or less if YT watchers on your channel would like to see tutorials about the G85 or maybe I mixed this up with another channel. Now with your move to S5 I guess this won't be happening? I get it and we all have our rationale and use cases.
