I bought my G85 a couple of years ago specifically for its strengths in video and it has never disappointed me. I paid around $650 for mine and it was worth every penny. Pair the IBIS with a stabilized Panasonic lens and they work together to give you the best stabilization you'll find without using a tripod.

After 6 years I am still very satisfied with my Panasonic G80. For events and concerts under dark lighting conditions, I use the full-frame Sony AIII. Shooting in the dark of non-moving objects is no problem for the G80. Especially with the great IBIS of the G80 in combination with slower shutter speeds, excellent results can be achieved handheld. And I must confess that I often get sharper results with my 100-400 Leica lens on the G80 than with my Tamron 150-500 on the Sony AIII full frame.

I have had my G85 for several years now. Started with a G7, however, the video handheld was a bit shakey. The G85 IBIS is amazing! I mostly used it as a travel camera and for hiking, it has been beaten up a bit and still works fine. I recently added a 16mm f1.4 lens which has made night photos and videos OUTSTANDING! Also, the latest firmware update has improved video focus with eye tracking significantly. Hope to get a G9 soon to add to my bag so I don't have to switch lens on the go.

Totally agree. I bought the G85 in 2017 as I needed a camera that could shoot 4k for an upcoming job. The GH5 was about to be released (I think it came out 3 months later so let’s say 4 months by the time you could actually get one) and it was so tempting but it was too expensive and I needed something sooner than that anyway. The G85 has been a great little camera and it still is going strong, in fact despite only shooting 16mp images I use it for real estate photography and it works great. I am considering upgrading to a GH52 for the 10 bit 422 capabilities and the 20.3mp photos but I keep thinking that the G85 is still doing a great job so maybe I don’t need to.

I have the GH4 / GH5 / GH5II and a GX8, but always tempted to get a G80/85 or the G90/95. However, since video is my main focus, the GH5II is my current tool of choice. If I were more photo oriented I might have chosen the G9. What keeps me in the µ4/3 ecosystem are the lenses, mainly the M.Zuiko Pro series primes and f2.8 zooms, and more recently the Leica Summilux f1.7 zooms. Two more acquisitions are the M.Zuiko 75mm/ 1.8 and the Leica 15mm/ 1.7. Both are incredibly small, light, and sharp. Other things that keep in the ecosystem is the IBIS is second to none, and the video specific features of the Lumix series which you will not find in any other brand period. Example, no Sony shoots DCI 4K, 4:3 Open Gate, uses Shutter Angle, or has Anamorphic options, and the list goes on… The GH5 films 6K back in 2017… Lumix G series cameras are just capable tools that are simply affordable… 🤔

I got my G85 last October 2021 and I have already used it for 4 weddings to daet (January 2022). G85 is such an underrated camera! Nolan--saw you question the other day about ideas for S5 content, I would love some talk about how you match color and stuff of the S5 with your G85. I struggle with matching my G85 to my G9...and I have an S5 on the way so thinking ahead about matching the S5 with the G9 (VLOG and VLOG L with those cameras is the obvious choice maybe but I try to stay lean and avoid too much color grading). Love your content--it's hard to find good Lumix videos, especially M43.

I am a classical cellist, and I am looking for an alternative to my (really old) camcorder. The advantage of what I'm mostly gonna be doing is that the camera will generally be on a tripod. Is the G85 the best option even compared to the GH4 and G95? Thank you so much for your channel!

Thanks so much! That means a lot. I’ve considered learning cello actually, but have no idea how to start haha! MY THREE REASONS: 1. SMALL: I recall first unboxing it and being shocked how small it was. But add a battery grip and lens and it feels "normal" sized. Strip those items off, put on a small 20 or 17mm pancake lens and you have a great walk-about. Or a very incognito video shooter. Almost fits in a pocket. 2. SEMI-PRO: While it omits a few pro features I wish it had, like a headphone jack, it can still be rigged up and shoot very pro projects. It's been a decent (if not perfect) B-cam for my GH6 since getting that. 3. IMAGE QUALITY: It's IQ is very good for video, about on par with similar 8bit cams like the Sony's 6000 cams or similar. No, it isn't as good as 10-bit sensors. But you can get very similar results by being careful with your exposures. And unlike most cinema cams, including the GH6, the G85 "feels" like a stills camera, making it a real hybrid. In truth, its stills IQ isn't as good as its video IQ. But it is nice to use, feels amazing in-hand with the batt grip on, and I hardly reach for my Canons for any casual photos any more. I'd hesitate to use it to shoot any pro still image work, though some do. Other MFT cams take better stills, like the G9 and 95, or maybe GH5. I can tell you the GH6's 25MP sensor delivers IQ on par with my Canons. And it's 100MP high res mode is amazing. And I've compared it to a Phase One's 150MP and you can hardly tell them apart. But, I digress... ;-)

Hello friend, one question, do you recommend the Sony a6000 for long streams, I have a little doubt and fear since I do live streams on twitch and they are long maybe 4 or maybe 6 hours and obviously the camera will be connected to a fake battery connected to the electricity all the time, that's why the reason for my fear when streaming I don't know if the camera overheats they told me that the Lumix G85 doesn't overheat in video and I don't know which one to choose I would appreciate it if you gave me your opinion, I hope see your answers, thanks.

I would not recommend it for autofocus. The stabilization is great if you are shooting handheld (no tripod) but I imagine you’ll be shooting mostly tripod shots. I would still recommend the G85 since you can continuously record for long periods of time. Just use manual focus since you have a pretty easy focus point to set.

When doing a video, how do i make the background blurry, but focused on my face? do I have to be in manual mode?
@alexjclelland
@alexjclelland 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the effect you are describing is called 'bokeh' (focus on subject, blurry background). This effect is achieved through setting your aperture as low as you can without overexposing the image. The lower the aperture, the more background blur you can achieve. Lenses have their own minimum aperture, and you want a lense with a low minimum aperture in order to get the best bokeh (1.7 is really good for cheaper lenses). If you are shooting videos outside during the day, it is much harder to achieve bokeh because setting your aperture low allows more light into the lense and overexposes your shot. In situations like that, getting an 'ND filter' (basically like sunglasses for your camera lense) helps, allowing you to lower the aperture without letting so much light in. If any of this is confusing, let me know and I'll try to explain differently. Hope this info helps!

@mr.s4849
@mr.s4849 2 жыл бұрын
I have a G85 and eventually picked up a G9. It’s also great, gets you 4K60, double card slots, and larger battery for longer performance. It is surprisingly a little hard to match the footage-in a way I like the G85 footage better, but I also love the G9. The G9 with the same lens and same settings as the G85 is a little flatter of an image, they are different sensors and I guess that’s why. The dual card slots on the G9 is key for me-I’ve (for whatever reason I can’t reproduce it) had issues when recording long (20 min +) 4K videos on the G85. 1 out of 10 longer 20 min videos have errors on the SD card. I’ve switched cards, formatted, you name it, can’t figure it out. Waiting after recording a large file seems to help but it still happens. Never had a problem with the G9 due to the double slots (every once in awhile a file is corrupted on one card but the other one is fine). Bad news though-the G9 has a 29 min recording limit per file while the G85 has none:) Basically I’d say if you’re ok with 4K30 and the one slot, the G85 is great.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
That’s strange about the sd issues - I haven’t seen anything like that with any of my cameras even on 1hr+ recordings on the G85. But to answer the original question - 1 - The G9 is an amazing deal and a good image quality upgrade 2 - you won’t get unlimited record limits like the G85 So if you don’t need infinite recording and dual SD, go with the G9.

@@cristianrojas1408 It’s hard to describe. I regularly shoot in 4K30 on both cameras mostly, it’s 100 mbs on both cameras. I usually use identical Panasonic 25 mm prime lenses on both cameras. I’m in standard picture profile or Cine D. The image from the G85 just, simply, looks nicer. It’s less flat (I even mess with the profiles to turn the saturation down on the G85 to match them but I can’t quite get it). The G85 has less/larger pixels I guess and that is better for video (more light into each pixel or something 🤷🏽).
