You always have the best advice, I used it when I got my puppy 2 years ago.. I'm happy to say that my dog is wonderful and a real joy to live with. We were at the feed store today and there was a young dog making a ruckus and my girl was like "whatever". I love how she's neutral with strangers (the only issue is when someone wants to say 'hi' I see the joy drain from their eyes when she doesn't care to see them Lol!) Thanks again for all your great advice!

@@jennjackson4386 I really love it, and as she gets older it just gets better. My dog is the first one I've ever raised, it was a lot of hard work and we didn't have the opportunity to use another dog as a distraction. You'll have a great advantage having another dog in the household to practice with. I wish you luck on a new future puppy!

amen. When I see another dog my first thought is "how can I find room to give the other dog space without pulling the leash straight back." My second thought it checking my breathing, my stance, etc. It does make a difference ( GSD owner )

hi larry, i am 15 years old and 6 months ago i got my first dog. i am obsessed with dog training and dog behavior. and love learning about it. in the next year or 2 i am doing the two certificates that you need to complete in my country to become a fully qualified dog trainer. i have a rhodesian ridgback and you have helped me so much in learning about dogs i have made a few errors so far but i knew i will and i have learned from them. she was very reactive toward dogs and now is amazing with dogs but freaks out a bit when they approach her or are very hyper or intense but are still working through it. i cant begin to explain how much you have helped me. i know she obviously wont be the best behaved or trained dog but when i brought her home i promised her and myself that i would do everything i can to bring out the best in her and do the best i can do to train her she is currently 9 months old and i am very proud of where she is. i dream of becoming as good as you one day

I have made changes and I totally get you because you make sense as a good dog trainer should. I really enjoyed the talk about e collers the other day too Training comes first and understanding the basics is so important . What Larry says here is so important. I have a 5 no old Rat Terrier who is a neutral blank slate when people come to the house be it UPS etc.. However the other day FedEx in a van had backed into our horseshoe driveway and right into our yard and was stuck. As I watched him continue to spin his tires relentlessly digging in I went onto my porch and began yelling at him to get his attention. My little Rat Terrier who has been neutral and loves people hit the storm door glass growling and barking like a full grown Pit. I came in and immediately put him in his kennel located 5 ft from my door and went back onto my porch as the man came to the door with a package. I had calmed down and to my surprise as I came back in the house so had my Rat. My pup had never barked at a person or vehicle ever. My attitude affected his. Thankfully it hasn’t affected him with delivery drivers since. Our attitude is everything and our dogs depend on us.

Glad you made this video. Recently passed someone walking two dogs. They all started to bark at each other, my 4m.o. GSD as well LOL. The difference was we just kept on moving. I might have said "enough" once in a calm manner. But other wise kept walking. While that person screamed at their dogs calling them a**holes and more, physically pushing her dogs along, Isla and I kept moving. Isla quickly stopped barking, kept an eye on them but essentially kept moving along. Once she focused back on me we had a great 2 minute play session!

Hi Larry, UK calling you for help! Thanks for all the videos. I've learned loads!!! I have a reactive 16 month old rescue male entire GSD. He was locked in a garage for 8 to 12 hours a day and walked at 3am in the morning, so never experienced life as a dog or with other dogs/people. I've had several german shepherds before but never one that has been reactive to dogs and people. I've just purchased the ecollar you use and will start using in the garden as he knows all the basic commands. He is hugely reactive on a walk, lungeing and barking at people and dogs. My problem is that I live on a busy main road. Traffic is not the problem he is not phased by it, trucks, trailers, buses, nothing at all. I don't want to cross the road every time I see somebody or a dog, besides which it is so busy I wouldn't be able to cross in time anyway. The issue is that we have a narrow pavement and two bus stops between me and green lanes. So to get to a safe space where I can work with him outside I have to run the gauntlet of people and dogs. What would you suggest as a way forward please? All help and comments appreciated!!!

Totally agree, dogs read us and all our emotions. This is why we must stand tall and be confident when round dogs. My girl knows I am her protector and shield. I protect her from the mass of non trained dogs, she goes to "gap/between" when dogs charge and I deal with it. A Bitches milk can cover the dog up to 21 weeks ,shots or not. I get pups out asap. Oh wow I have had to work Zed through loud traffic noises. I give her a touch command or left about turn or spread em etc.Whilst doing something else the dog loses interest in loud noises. It is so important to keep the same energy. Now she isn't bothered about traffic or bangs etc. Great video Larry, thank you : )

Well said Larry! I have a nervous aggressive Saluki lurcher 7 years old . As a pup she showed very nervous reactions to dogs at a distance she would do a sort of high pitched scream so I believe genetics may play a part as I socialised her well. Then she got attacked by the same dog on several occasions plus dogs not reading her well when she had enough of playing . Then one day she had enough of it all and started to have a go back ! I could go on and on about all the different stressful situations I've been in with her . I've used positive treat training and the clicker which did work but just manages the problem. I do lots of research and believe it boils down to her feeling unprotected by me at the time she was attacked . Due to the situations I've been in I am very anxious myself when faced with an off lead dog while we are out walking as some owners just don't get that not every dog is happy about being approached I try 100% to not put my dog into situations she's unhappy with to keep her under threshold she has come along way and I am trying my best to be more of a leader . I've just read a book called understanding and handling dog aggression which has been the most insightful. Well on top of her dog reactivity she absoulutely loathes cats with a passion it's like a military operation getting her out the door as there are cats everywhere where I live . I miss the days when I had my Springer spaniel he was a joy to walk everything I put into him I was rewarded by having a well adjusted dog now I have a nervous one and she has an anxious owner . What a partnership we make eh !

Faith in handler drills. Your dog will become convinced you'll protect her because the drills _shows_ her that you can protect her. It's an exercise Jay Jack came up with and I use it a lot with nervous dogs who need convincing the handler is up to the job. It builds your confidence as much as your dog's. With cat chasing, that's going to be harder to sort out. I would employ a good balanced trainer and probably an ecollar. Ecollars are GREAT for nervous dogs. It builds confidence quickly.

Thank you for your reply I will look up The Faith In Handler . I always say to my children that I'm no good for her due to my anxieties over her reactivity . I'm working on my assertiveness and confidence hopefully that will make a big difference in her behaviour.

I now believe raising a dog is just like raising your own kid. You have to be a good role model and treat every opportunity as a good training session. To me socialization is to live with other dogs and humans in a natural setting. All dogs needs to grow up with other dogs, especially adults, so that they can learn from them what should and what should not be done. Say stealing food is bad. The adults will not allow them to steal their food. They learn this early on.

Thank you for all the great information you put out for average dog owners like myself. I am the type A personality you described in your video. I watch all your videos and do the very best to follow all your instructions with my two year old golden doodle. Over all he has been a great dog. However, recently I’ve experienced a problem when I take him to the the mall with me. He’s so darn adorable, people come up to him without my permission and start petting him and do the whole “baby talk” or high pitch voice talk which causes Bentley to seek attention. Fortunately, Bentley only walks up to them and makes himself available for them to pet him. 1) How do I stop people from petting him without my knowledge or permission, and 2) how do I keep Bentley from getting too excited?
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
Ask Bentley for calming behaviors when he's likely to get excited (sit-stay/down-stay) and tell people directly not to pet your dog. "Sorry, my dog's in training and MUST NOT BE TOUCHED OR APPROACHED". I turn my back on people and focus 100% on my dog. I put myself in between the approaching person and my dog and orientate to keep the person to my back whilst telling them to "back off" or "go away please" and walk away if needed. Sometimes I'll wear a hi-vis jacket with "dog in training" in big letters on it. I've also carried a riding crop to create space.

These are so helpful thank you! We did the exact example of what you talk about with our pup. The advice to keep away don’t go out around other dogs with your pup, in defense there was a dog sickness at the time in CA. But now as a 3 year old he is noise skittish still belly to ground if a bus goes by. I have been just moving on and walking and wondering if that was correct. It is hard not to react when you see him doing this out of the corner of my eye. 🐶

Great video! Thank you! My dog is very reactive on the leash when she sees other dogs. She is overly excited and wants to get to the other dog to say hello or play. Because of her over excitement, I could see this causing a problem. When she has played with other dogs it is the same thing, very over excited, jumping all over them, too much and she is not getting the signals from the other dogs when they are telling her it is too much. I get nervous on the walks and have not been sure what to do. I will try to just walk by with confident and not caring that the other dog is there. This was helpful, I need more help on how to teach her to play and meet politely.

Phoenix and I are a service animal couple in training. In many respects he is already of service. Our training goals are many. Having CPTSD I do not have the luxury of simply setting an intention to stay mindful of my tone of voice and reactivity. I need to train Phoenix to have an appropriate response under particular stimuli... May I please solicit some free advice as I do not have adequate finances to employ your training or any professional training. 🤞🏼Hopeful my new aid will assist with fundraising for future training. 1. Tween: dog length space between me and another person, particularly in a stressful or questionable circumstance. (Previously Phoenix would walk two or three steps forward, do an about face and make eye contact with me. With Phoenix being such a large dog some people found this unnerving, particularly on the occasions that he moves quickly) Recently (February 2020): I have already re-taught Phoenix to keep his head close to my thighs as he circles from my right leg to my left leg and then backs up, all the while maintaining eye contact. This puts his head towards me and his tail towards the other person. Goal: I don’t know how to achieve it but I would like him to move his hind end to maintain dog length of space between me and the other person. I have achieved rear end awareness so that he will remain facing me when I turn right or left or take a step forward or backward. However, I want HIM to maintain the space in the event the other person try to move around him and approach me. Goal: Greeting protocol with strangers: someone greets my dog in that cutesy voice reserved for pets and small children, someone tries to touch my dog, someone stopped me to talk... usually about my dog Under these and additional conditions I would like Phoenix to offer to the “tween” behavior without being commanded to do so.

I do all the things you recommend but I'm worried it may be too late and I need to do something important that's slightly different, because I don't have the strong bond yet with my dog he's never had owners or been in the house before just been with his siblings in a field/pen. I know I need to stop problems before they become problems but what is the best way when the dog is still brand new to everything Thank you for all the great information you put out there

Patience, understanding and lots of encouragement for doing the right thing. Restrict freedom as much as possible to prevent bad habits starting and only give freedom as the dog shows he can handle it. It's never too late. You've got the perfect opportunity to introduce the rules with a dog who has no experience. Don't wait for mistakes to happen, train what you want right from the start. Use baby gates, leashes and a crate to restrict access.

I've recently started helping out a friend of mine with the training of his dog after he saw how well behaved my Malinois was. My dog had never snapped at another dog before and lives with a pit mix who he plays with on a regular basis, but when this much smaller dog (mine is 60lbs and the friends is at max 15lbs) jumped up to kinda use him to stand he growled and snapped. What can I do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Larry, could you please address the issues of what goes on in the home, specifically for those of us in urban areas on zero lot lines. Dogs barking inside the home at people passing by, at the UPS truck, etc. Barking because the dogs next door are barking. We have tried everything, no-bark spray, shaking and rattling noisy cans. You name it. Mostly we are yelling “no” and “stop” and it probably just sounds to them like we are cheering them on. 🙄 We have tried everything short of the e-collar inside the home. We live in a freaking fishbowl and we can’t board up windows. We need peace and all we are doing is yelling our fool heads off, which I know is utterly stupid and useless. HELP!
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
Cap the barking. Train them to bark on cue - "speak" and reward. The next stage is to train "quiet" which is where you cue "speak", don't reward, then wait for the barking to stop and reward instead. Once the dogs can follow the cues reliably you can use those cues to control the barking after triggers. Let them bark twice and then cue them for "quiet" and reward. You can then use corrections to enforce the "quiet" cue. By moving the barking from a habitual response to an operrant behavior, the dogs become more concsiously aware of the barking and more able to control it, which in turn enables you to get it under control. Then if you do need to use a bark collar, it will work much better because the dog understands what the correction relates to.

Thank you for the advice sir. I am a first time rottweiler owner and it was a huge challenge raising this moose however i find that they are the best breed for me. now he is 16 months old very playfull and obedient dog. my only problem is when we go to a Veterinaran and they check him up he doesnt want to be touched around his body and when that happens he became defensive and will bite. the vet told me that next time if i want we can come and give medications to the dog before the appointment to calm him down. now i dont know what to do, should i go to other vets who has more experience with this kinds of dogs or proceed with the vets option wich to give my dog calming pills? Thanks.
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
Handling drills. Get your dog comfortable with you handling him like a vert would. Check ears, eyes, feet, legs etc and reward for letting you do it. Go to the vets and do some basic training in the waiting room, play games and leave. Do this over and over until he's more comfortable just visiting the vet and not getting treatment. Then make a fake appointment and practice a basic exam. Keep it brief and positive and leave. Vets are almost always a negative experience for our dogs because we only ever go when they need injections or the like. Changing that association to be a neutral or good thing is very helpful.

Larry, I have been following you for a while and really enjoy the content. Can you make a video on strangers entering the home? I know you say, your dog is created in the home, but if the dog is reacting to a stranger do you put it away? I still have apprehension with my dog around people he doesn't know. I don't want the dog on a place bed like a zombie getting lit up when it moves, like half these other trainers induce.

My dog was attacked by a man just next to me. It took some time, but i got him relaxed enough to walk with next to people. If someone find my dogs interesting and my dog see someone is staring at them, he will go insane. I stay calm, i dont yell, i give him a small nudge with the leash like i do when he is stuck smelling something when i want to keep walking. I dont know if i feel guilty that he was attacked next to me and i did not stopped it (even though i couldn't) or if the dog really does not trust me. How can i know if i got his trust and how can i earn it back if its lost?
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
Trust takes time and proof. You need to _show_ your dog you can be relied on. Don't feel guilty, you can't undo the past. What's done is done and how you deal with the fallout is what matters now. Dogs WANT to trust so they just need an opportunity to feel they can trust. You know when that dog puts his trust in you because you see it and feel it. He looks to you for guidance, he follows what you say, he pushes through challenges because you're there to support him. Example: a dog has an issue walking on a particular surface. I don't buy into his fear. I know 100% nothing bad will happen so I take a lead and apply pressure in the direction of the floor, dog takes a step towards the floor, pressure comes off and I reward with food etc. We keep doing this - pressure - dog moves - release from pressure - reward. I might stand behind the dog and prevent him from moving backwards and only give him the option to move towards the floor, reward and celebrate any progress. It's just like when as a kid you want to jump from a low branch of a tree but you're scared so you hesitate and have to pyche yourself up. The longer you hesitate, the harder it gets. If someone was to simply push you off the branch you'd find out you had nothing to worry about and that a low branch is easy to jump from. Next time you try the same jump, you're more confident and don't hesitate as much or at all. I hope that makes sense.

My 7 month lab will bite me especially when I correct him, or push him away / give me space. I get irritated so do u feel he continues jumping and nipping at me cause he knows I'm irratated.? I have started conditioning him this week.
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're giving him a reaction so his behavior is "working" in his mind. Get up and walk away rather than pushing him away. Don't get into a fight (conflict). Frustration (irritation) has no place in dog training. Walk away, calm yourself down, regroup and try again. Leave the room and shut the dog in if you need to. If whenever he gets in your space, you leave, he'll learn that being pushy = you go away.

Good evening Larry. Can I ask you what are your thoughts on sending your dog away to a boarding training school? I sent my 1 year old Rottie away for 3 weeks and I am getting a lot of negative comments because most say that the training should be with me, though we have had a lot of training sessions together. I just wanted to have more intensive training. If you could please made a video of the pro and cons of boarding training. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. I have a shedog almost two years old, never reacted or barked to other dogs, very sociable. But I do not know if it is because she is becoming an adult and dogs in my street have taken a bite, now all dogs that do not belong to her group of friends, she barks like crazy as if she wanted to attack.

Hi I want to thank you for your videos they have been helpful! I have two female mini bulldogs they are sisters a month apart, two years old currently. I rescued them from a puppy mill where they were living in bird cages and for the most part the training I did do they responded well ( lil to no treats, still). They have been well behaved for the most part and we took it easy on them due to the conditions they lived in for the first few months of life. They are best friends however, They have turned on each other in the past week.. I have been doing everything to fix this. I didn’t realize I was making so many mistakes, I have been keeping them separated. I believe it’s due to me and the fear I have of them fighting I am working on that and back to basics with walking no jumping sit stay etc. They are both full of anxiety and fear. So my question is what can I do to bring them together. They were walking good together but since I have been training them to walk properly they see each other and loss it.. I see lil wins. Like today they were in the same area with a baby gate up and didn’t react to each other until my son came home.. I am willing to do pretty much anything to fix this.. trying to avoid e Collars And crates due to the history of the dogs. Please any advice or direction would be beyond appreciated. Thank you Ashley

You are absolutely right on dog park's. My one & only trip was horrible. For both my fur babies, on me. I was moving & wanted to let them just be able to walk, run off leash awhile. All was great the first 10 minutes. Soon as I saw a man getting out with his pit I started trying to get my girls hooked back on leash. My bigger girl is a corgi mix but she can pull a 185 pound 6'3" man like a rag doll if the leash is let out. I couldn't believe I heard that man give a attack command. Dear Lord neither my girls had ever been in a fight. Thank God he hadn't made it through the 2nd gate. I'm so thankful my son decided to meet me there. He had to get by the pit to get to me & my girls. It would killed my little Chihuahua. He never called it back off, my son was scratched bad on legs & arms. I gave the little one to him just don't put her down an get her out. My bigger girl & pit was at fence, she's trying as hard to fight back the bitting the pit was doing through the fence, I didn't think I'd ever get control. This jerk sat down laughing. Finally I've got control. I'm 5'4" & was barely 102 pounds. Something got the pits attention for a few seconds. My time to get through the gate. We barely& I mean barely get to the gate & again he gave the pit command & I got her out before getting myself out. My son was able to hook the gate. I had no other way out. The fence was 10 ft high, even if I could have picked her up, no way to handed her to my son. The one & only time I've ever gone without protection because it is city property. It wasn't the pit needed put down. I still can't believe another human would do this to a dog. This was a year ago an I'm still mad. I just take her for a pretty good walk of the mornings but with 8 major surgeries & twice left there's day's I can't. If I can get her off leash during the day in & out she could run, retrieve play time.

I have a question. I just got a puppy and it has zero food motivation. Do you have an idea of what I can do to make him more motivated or ...
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 4 жыл бұрын
I've never met a dog with ZERO food motivation. It might appear that way, but all dogs are motivated to eat at some point. Try lots of different treats - chicken, turkey, cheese, carrots, steak, ham, fish etc. Puppy might be too distracted and just needs some time to settle in. You can also start using his meals if you want to go that far. A hungry dog is more likely to take food treats. Also get puppy checked for any medical condition that might be causing the issue.

I’m not Larry but I can tell you what Phoenix and I did… Phoenix was two years old when I met him and his previous handler. Up to that point all of their training had been accomplished through real world immersion. Over the next three years I would occasionally endeavor to teach the dog something with food however his owner was opposed so it never went very far. Fast forward to the autumn of 2017… The dogs handler was becoming less stable and the dog came into my care full-time. I took what I knew about clicker training with a puppy and just began from scratch. BTW: I do not use a clicker device held in my hand. I need my hands for other things. I put my tongue into the hollow of the roof of my mouth and make a double click sound. It rather closely resembles the sound made by the handheld device. 1) in order for the dog to be food motivated it has to be hungry. With a puppy you would need to check with your veterinarian for a feeding schedule. With Phoenix being as mature as he was I simply weaned him down to eating only once daily. That puts training time at his most hungry time of the day. 2) The food reward has to be enticing enough to overcome most distractions. Currently our heavy distraction food reward is raw bison. We roll it out 1/4 inch thin on parchment paper, than freeze it. Next we cut it into 3/8 inch strips. Finally we cut it into 3/8 inch cubes. I store it the freezer and transfer a fistful into a tiny portable container. I feed it with a fork that has been cut down to only 2 fork tines. 3) for the first few sessions, maybe even the first week, I would simply take a few minutes, two or three times a day, click and give a goodie. In no time at all I could make the click sound and the dogs head would flip around expecting a goodie. 4) The next step was to wait for eye contact, say his name, give a goodie. 5) pretty soon the dog is watching your every move and notices when you go for the goody container. Additionally his name now has a very positive association. NOW training can begin. Ending a session... toss 3 to 5 goodies onto the floor and say “all done” than walk away and make yourself otherwise busy

Dear Larry, thank you for all your help, l’m learning so much from you at every session. I get so stressed at having to go to obedience classes. Here in England all the classes are in the local village hall,very very small space. By the end of the session i was so stressed out. He is a big Shepard and you can imagine a room full of little yappy dogs i struggled to hold onto him. These classes are the thing everyone does here and if u don’t people are quite rude about. It.I was stressed my dog was stressed and it was a painfull experience, i came home and took a valium. I have to laugh about it now. Its nice to hear that you can do things differently with your pet and enjoy him or her. I’m without a dog for the first time in 30 years and i seem to have lost my confidence about if i can do it again. As i ‘m on my own a bit the house is very quiet and its good for people to know there is a dog around even if its a sweet dog. I don’t know of anyone who has felt like this.Anyway thank you again for all your help. I learn something new with every session you do. Kind Regards.Carole

I have have been attacked by other dogs while on walks with my young pitty. Naturally I was on edge everytime I would take him out. One day I took him out after I had a few drinks. I was not drunk just relaxed. Well, that was one of the most calm and relaxed walks I had ever had. My dog was not reactive at all because I was relaxed. I am not saying to take a couple of shot before every walk, but it makes sense what you say about your dogs reading the handler.
