WTA held a meeting in Rome with the other top 25 WTA players. The meeting was held in order to decide whether Seles’ No. 1 ranking should be frozen while she recovered from the stabbing. Aside from one player who abstained, the entire body of players collectively voted against Seles. Peter Bodo’s response says it all: “The plain fact is that Monica Seles got stabbed in the back twice: first by Parche and then by tennis.” In the wake of the most violent moment in the history of their sport, the professional tennis community responded by saying, “If Seles got stabbed, that’s her problem! Now can I have her locker at Wimbledon?” The German government decided to join the WTA and bury one more massive metaphorical knife in her back by giving Parche a two-year suspended sentence. That’s right - the man who stabbed Monica Seles didn’t spend a single day in prison.

He couldn't accept the fact that the lunatic stabbed Seles because Seles was the best at that time. She was up 3-1 against Graf between '91 & '93 in GS. The only advantage of Graf, GS title-wise, was she was up 11 v 8. And that's a mere 3 Slams difference. Had it not for the unfortunate incident, Seles would have surpassed Graf in number of Slams by '94. And this imbecile "Ilya Kuryakin" cannot accept the facts. #imbecile

From January 1991 until February 1993, Seles won 22 titles and reached 33 finals out of the 34 tournaments she played. She compiled a 159-12 win-loss record (92.9% winning percentage), including a 55-1 win-loss record (98%) in Grand Slam tournaments. In the broader context of her first four years on the circuit (1989-1992), Seles had a win-loss record of 231-25 (90.2%) and collected 30 titles.

She actually won 8 grand slams before she was stabbed in 1993. I firmly believe that she had the potential to dominate the game til Hingis made her arrival in 1997. She could have so many more Slams if it wasn't for that psycho Gunther Parche.

Hingis did not have the power to hurt Seles. She would of dominated the game till late 1998 when Lindsay Davenport started finding form during the us hard court season and buy 2001 would of found it hard with the William sisters. In 1993 Monica would of won the French and US opens. In 1994 Monica would of won the Calendar grand slam especially with the early excite of Graf at Wimbledon 1995 Monica would of won French open and us open. Mary pierce Aus open winner on fire that tournament. 1996, aus open, French and us open 1997, aus open, French open and us opens 1998, aus open and French open 1999 aus open and French open 2000 French open Total = 27 gs titles Steffi would of ended up with 14 gs Monica would of won 8 aus opens, 11 French opens, 1 Wimbledon, 7 us opens Martina Hingis would of only won Wimbledon In 1997. Seles was on a trajectory to become the GOAT during the stabbing ... so sad.. she had just beaten Graf convincingly at the AO .. was dishing out 6-0, 6-1 to very good players frequently ... no, she was a lot lot more dominant and complete than Hingis, she exposed Graf's weaknesses and went on to take over Graf's reign. Whats more she was becoming fitter, slimmer and fiercer in her strokes and attacking game, she was taking the ball almost immediately right after the bounce which robbed her opponents of precious reaction time and made Graf scramble a lot. Frankly saying, I was actually quite tired and frustrated at Seles's domination of tennis as I wished there was more people challenging her but there was not .. but I would never ever wish her reign to be cut short in such a manner. She was such a young girl with so much promise and greatness in her future, if she was going to become the greatest of all time in the most boring manner by beating the rest of the field to shame, so be it, thats what she deserves ... the stabbing is the worst thing to have happened to tennis in terms of fairness ...

Strange. I'm currently watching on BBC2 a Wimbledon womens' final from 1993 between Steffi Graf and Jana Novotna *(RIP)* and this crime came to mind as it was in the same year. Monica could've and should've won more titles if not for this. She was No1 in the world before this happened and that monster did it because his favourite Steffi was No2 and didn't like it. So he remedied that......and it worked. Monica could've been the greatest female player of all time. Alright, the Williams sisters were up and coming but I believe she probably could go toe to toe with both sisters. Absolute tragedy.

Dear Monica. I`m a 51 years old man from Denmark in Jutland. When I was a teenager I did not have any Idol. But in the late eighties me and my friend start seeing tennis. He was a fan of Steffi Graf but, when we saw you and Steffi one day, I was so sure. This player was my big idol from now on. Your special look. The way you hit the ball. And later your scream when you hit the ball. That day you become my BIG IDOL. In a way I maybe already knew, that I was gay. So it was not because I saw you in that way, as many people do, if they have a fan. It is because they think they look very good. But you was so special. But then came the day, when I hear in the radio, that you was attacked in Hamburg. Believe me, I was nearly crying, and I was waiting for you to come back in two years. And when I heard that you would return to the tennis court, I was so happy. Unfortunately you were never the same again on the court, and you could have bin the best player ever. Even bigger than Serena, because you had 6 years more to take some Grand Slam titles before the Williams came to the court. You was and still are my biggest IDOL and the only IDOL ever. I remember that I wish I would see you on the court live someday, but unfortunately it never happened. You was my star, my IDOL, and big Hero. Dear Monica, I wish you all the best in the future, and hope you are happy deep inside your heart, because you deserve this from here and to the moon and back again. Take care my dear Monica, maybe I will see you someday, out in the real world. But my back is not well. I can not sit in a chair, so I can not take a trip. Only walk, but walk 8000 kilometers to see you for real, is probably too big a challenge. But give me 2 years to walk, and we can meet halfway? I would love to hug you. The player who became my big idol. Hope to see you for real someday. Take care. I'm sending lots of love your way. Warmest greetings from Johnny from Denmark.

Two greatest tennis players born only 100km away from each other. Djokovic (Belgrade) - Seles (Novi Sad). They also had the same coach Jeleno Genčić.

I found it really disrespectful that they carried on the tournament like nothing happened: business as usual. Tennis was boring after that Steffi had no real opponents : yeah a bit Sanchez ( who for me benefited as much as Steffi did I m not sure she would have made to number one and made so many finals) such a shame on a personal and on a sport s level we ll never know what would have happened so many great matches between Steffi and Monica like Roger and Rafa and many rivalry . Such a crazy story.

Steevo Nuissier I think it would have been far more disrespectful and unfair to the other players if they didn't continue the tournament. It was a terrible thing that happened but it wasn't a life threatening injury.

No, no. Monica has always defended the fact that it continued. She was asked about it in interview and she said that she would have been mortified if they’d cancelled it for her.

That wasn't an accident. Then, they were preparing satanisation of Serbia and Serbs. They didn't want to allow a world's champion to be from Serbia, because Serbia should be connected only with bad things and associations. They offered her American citizenship, she refused it. She didn't want to allow Steffi Graf to bit her, when they asked her. And they organised 'crazy' man, to stab her. That is the true story. :((( Show less

Don’t forget that all topped-some number players got together in Rome 1993 to vote against protecting Monica’s #1 ranking, except for Argentina’s Gabriela Sabatini who voted for.

In my view Monica has proven she is the greatest of all times as before she was literally stubbed to be stopped, she was literally devastating Stefi Graph as a subcribed runner up, that took later the female GOAT position, taking over so all the wins and titles the were undoubtedly, reserved for Monica if she had not got stubbed.

This is why there will always be an asterisk (*) next to Steffi Graf's WTA record. With Monica Seles, her nemesis and main competitor out of the way, Graf had a clear pathway to win all the tournament titles she accumulated over the next few years. The man who stabbed Seles, Günter Parche, admitted that he stabbed Seles in order to help Steffi Graf regain the No. 1 ranking in women's tennis. Graf herself showed little remorse or empathy for Seles after the stabbing occurred. If the stabbing had been a random incident with no rhyme or reason, things would have been somewhat different. But since the clear, undeniable goal was to help Graf regain her status as the top-ranked player in women's tennis, Parche literally got what he wanted, and Graf reaped the benefits with the additional championships she won and millions of dollars she made afterward.
