Pilot Bambi

Жыл бұрын

After we waited for our Sudanese landing permits to be confirmed we departed Egypt towards Sudan. After a beautiful sunset we run into bad weather. With the help of an airline aircraft in the area we navigate our way around the storm. We land in Khartoum, Sudan and explore the country the next day. We visit several tempels and historic sides and stop along the road for some hibiscus tea. We end the day at the impressive pyramids of Meroe.
This is episode 6 of the Long way South Series; a 6 week journey flying the new Sling High Wing aircraft from The Netherlands to South-Africa.

I loved the way you actively used relays to help communicate and to avoid weather. Props to the KLM and Air France pilots being professional and very helpful. I'd have really liked to see more of the thunderstorm situation, but I assume both of you were busy piloting more than filming, which is exactly the correct thing to do. Just absolute top level piloting from you!

The fact it was a KLM to be your first radio relay was such a nice coincidence. I agree with Maurits: "WTF Dutchies at 8000". Also great idea to ask AF for WX, and thanks to both displaying professional airmanship by helping you out. Great vlog!

Using the camera low light capabilities to help avoid the storm: genius! Knowing there is a 39,000 ft TCU in the dark, somewhere in front of you must have been terrifying… I was sweating bricks just watching you managing the situation. All alone, no radar vectors from ATC... I’m really glad you are ok!! Take care and blue skies.

Thank you so much for this video. You scared us through the night flight without weather radar. I know Sudan very well flying to Khartoum from Doha every month during 3 years. Rain and storm can be terrible. Thank you for grasping so well all the good things about Sudan and Sudanese who are so nice. You are great persons and very impressive. (From France)

Today’s been a “Pilot Bambi watch day” - so I’ve seen several, but not all your videos YET. Enjoying the heck out of them! They strike a cord with me, a new PPL (7 mos) with not many females around, but also one who flies with her husband a lot and enjoys learning more about aviation all the time. You are so inspiring! You have so much experience…I enjoyed the Caravan pre-flight - your knowledge of the engine workings! You’re amazing in the Sling, but equally amazing in the Helicopters! A few comments…THANK YOU for being safe and putting your seatbelt ON before landing (so many gals record videos without safety regards) Re products…you don’t link the Garmin site, the ray bans (you wear the “Jacks” well) or apple (is Mattis enjoying the ipad 10? I just got one too..but you could “sell me” on anything. Your enthusiasm is infectious! ❤ def want a Sling HW now😉

That makes 6 out of 6 episodes that I have thoroughly enjoyed, you are both very effective videographers who know how to tell a story with beautifully shot video and some great editing. But don't forget the aviation part, that too is excellent and educational - using other better equipped pilots to help was a brilliant!

I was most interested to watch this episode 6 with your approach to Khartoum after dark, your positive comments about Sudan and the incredible visit to the Royal Necropolis at Meroe. In late August 1992 my wife and I travelled from Johannesburg to London and at that time SAA offered a daytime flight. There were clouds and storms over most of tropical Africa but the weather cleared in South Sudan and we picked up the Nile and followed it north, seeing Khartoum from some 35,000 feet. We followed the Nile until Aswan, when we turned slightly west and headed for Crete, we saw the late afternoon sun on the west coast of Italy and the setting sun on the Matterhorn, before landing in London after dark. It is a flight I shall always remember, particularly seeing the Nile, Khartoum and Lake Nasser. You have inspired me to consider visiting the Necropolis at Meroe.

Thanks for stopping in Sudan. I worked in the field for 6 months in 1983-84 in the south and along the Blue Nile and well remember the hospitality of the people and the beautiful landscape, quite magical. Our transport to and from Wau and a bush strip was a reliable DC-3 flying at 10,000 feet where temperatures were quite cool. So many good memories of that time, particularly the heat, smells and of that uniquely flavored tea. I see Khartoum has not changed much. Best wishes on your continuing journey from Vancouver, Canada.
