Hi Scott thanks for sharing your tips. I've done two patios and string lines do my head in. You trip over them or it takes one proud tile due to stick out a bit and you've lost your line. If I do another job I'm gonna have some detachable string like you've done using blocks, as guidance take it off then use a wooden block cut to give me 1:80 fall on my level then check with string and take it off again. Spot on 're grout joints, when it comes to those multi size tiles it's all down to maths, for example two tiles 60 and 30 put together next to a 90 gives you a length of 91 because of the grout joint in the middle . It's tricky but just have to try and compensate. Hardest part of the job apart from how physical it is, is gettimg those darn levels and even worse when you have to navigate round a man hole.

Many thanks for your reply, I have put Aco drains outside the sliding door threshold so I think 1:100 fall as I don't really want the water flowing too quickly towards the house, do you think that would be ok. The patio is 5 meters deep by 7 meters wide. Thanks Chris.

Hi Scott. I'm doing a DIY job at home. Quite a big area. The tile supplier is recommending me to pour a concrete slab beforehand and lay my porcelain tile on this. Is this OTT or should I just lay it on a 2" mortar bed on top of compacted CL804(stone hardcore)

You should only lay porcelain tiles on concrete if they’re only 10 mm exterior porcelain tiles are 20 mm i’m laid on the usual 100 mm of type oneMOT hard-core and then 40 mm cement bed for the tile. As for spaces are use 5 mm hope this helps 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks for that Scott. I didn't realise if I had a concrete base I could use 10mm porcelain. That will probly be cheaper. Would I just use an outdoor tile adhesive then on top of the concrete for the tile and is the tile primer still necessary

Hi I have a question. I've been waiting weeks now to lay my sandstone patio but every weekend as if by magic seems to drop somewhere between to 2° to -2° at night. Everything I read online suggests don't lay unless the temp is above 4° for 24 hours after laying. How do people in the trade get round this? Do you just stop laying this time of year? Is there anything i can do so i can just crack on? Was hoping to make a start tomorrow but now it reckons Saturday night will drop to 0° overnight. Is this ok to proceed? Otherwise its another weekend wasted and the wait continues. So frustrating. Thanks for any help or feedback

I hear your pain as long is when you’re laying it’s above 4° then go for it it’ll already have started to set before night time when it does get cold so just go for it.
