Neymar is one of the most gifted players of this or any other generation. His playing style, personality and the decisions that have shaped his career also make him one of the most polarising athletes of recent times.
But is he also one of the unluckiest players we’ve ever known? Seb Stafford-Bloor explains why he might be. Marco Bevilacqua illustrates.

Some time ago, he and Barcelona kept complaining that the referees didnt protect Neymar enough and that opposition players disproportionally targeted him. Many people disregarded it at the time, saying they should stop complaining and get on with in. But with the power of hindsight, it is practically inarguable that Neymar's career has suffered from injuries, many of which were caused by opponents challenges. It is only in our imagination that we may see what Neymar could've achieved, had he been able to reach is true heights.

both Ronaldo and Messi changed their style so the chances they get smashed by a bad tackle are much lowered. They stopped doing winger style dribbling, holding the ball for dozens of seconds at a time trying to embarass people etc., stuff that they were capable of doing, but risky. They moved more centrally and became very efficient, not needing 10 touches every time. Whereas Neymar has never changed. His playstyle is STILL dribble it like crazy and make the fullback look like an idiot. Even after all these injuries and rough play and reputation for undressing defenses.. It's as much on him as his opponents.

Extremely unlucky to be injured so often and at such key moments but I can't help but feel that if his style of play makes him particularly prone to injury then he should have received coaching/conditioning to mitigate this, whether that's PSG or the player refusing, who knows? I'm no coach but I do know that in the modern game you can be a technical player and not be injured so often by making small changes to your game and lifestyle. I hope that he gets some type of opportunity towards the end of his career to show the world how talented he really is.

Refs need to protect these players more. They often focus on keeping the game fair, but the truth us winger, especially those who are highly skilled dribblers never get a fair shake. The rules should not just be applied individually, the rules should also be applicable to the team. For example, if a team has fouled the same player 6 times their should be a yellow awarded to the last player who found him no matter how severe. If they do it again, then another 3 total yellow cards can be awarded, and then an automatic red is awarded to whomever fouls that player. 6 is a bit much, but I think this illustrates how the rules should be better used to protect players and penalize teams for targeting skilled players via malicious tackling.

I believe Neymar could have avoided some of these injuries if he had dedicated an offseason to bulking up his physique. His play style is very similar to Ronaldo during his early years at Man United. Ronaldo was quick and flashy but relatively ineffective until he hit the weights. Neymar could probably bounce off some of these challenges and gain extra explosiveness through work in the gym
@danielcancel2901

Nah that would take away more of his speed which he already lost some due to his injuries. So he did bulk up a bit but not too much to not hinder his speed even more. He needs it due to his playstyle and he’s wrongfully tackled at times when he doesn’t even have the ball anymore. Like defenders hate others talents on display. Also saying he’s ineffective is cap, he’s super effective he can give you an assist or goal per game look at Neymar’s stats. Dude is insane to be playing at a high level after getting this many injuries. Ronaldo was never as injury prone as neymar.

I always thought that his character problems where really heightened by his devastating injury in the 2014 World Cup. I feel like that was the moment his trajectory took a turn for the worse. I think with him failing in the Brazilian national team the pressure of having to outlive the likes of Pelé and Ronaldo on a national level and Messi at Barca became too much all whilst maybe losing some trust in his body. That’s why he went to PSG: To atleast escape the Messi pressure. I’d argue without that injury and the following 7-1 defeat Neymar would have stayed for Barca atleast until his contract was up and would not have taken the first possible exit.

When I have a teammate who play in middle of the pitch that often get hard and stupid tackle, and he often leave pitch with injury or brush, our manager move him to wide pitch. In middle you will get 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 players that likely to tackle you in a game but in wide area only 1 or 2. PSG team coach should do that I think, but I'm sorry my mistake, Neymar is his own manager, he will play where he want and he want to play in area that give him big chance to get another same injury. @A Desperately Lonely Sir He's been unlucky with PSG, but his injuries really don't help. There's a serious question regarding whether the injuries are due to the way he plays. Just like tennis trio rivalry like Federer-Nadal-Djokovic we could have seen a similar trio rivalry in football with Messi-Ronaldo-Neymar ( it was almost like this between 2014-2016) ...... Nevertheless Neymar just dropped off and only has one person to blame, none other than himself! With all due respect, Neymar's decision making in his career, & his dedication level was nowhere near Cristiano or Lionel Messi. Another excellent video - I've always maintained that Neymar was for a long time, the 3rd best player in the world. I rate him highly when others have dismissed him as just a diver. I didn't know the extent of his injuries however, or the way he got them, but it's clear he's always being targeted and the players who injure him know they can get away with it because the referees just think he's playacting. Neymar is definitely a player who doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Constant targeting and fouling are the reason that "entertainers" like Ronaldinho and Neymar have gone extinct. It's part of the reason why the Premier League has less than half the number of take-ons per game than it did 7 years ago. It's anti-football, it's dangerous, it slows the game down, it cuts out the magic and I pray that they are ridded from our game somehow

Said the same back in the 90s especially after the Van Basten injury they changed the rules internationally to prevent heavy tackles especially behind by punishing the offender more harshly. But unfortunately this still doesn't prevent targeted efforts to injure a player. I think it's more down to flair being coaches out of players in an academy level rather than heavy tackles, is the reason why we aren't seeing "entertaining" type players anymore especially at a world class level.

It seems today's football is not suited anymore for talented players like him. Football is becoming less brazillian and more english with less skilful players and more physical games without spaces. Also, the criteria referees take are harmful to the good old football. Defenders know they can get out and the blame goes to the player that wants to play, not on the unfair tackle the strikes receives. It is sad this is happening, Europe is dominating and adapting rules to fit their needs, harming other football cultures.
@epicmarschmallow5049
@epicmarschmallow5049 Жыл бұрын
What a stupid opinion. The physicality of the game has decreased as seen by how referees routinely award penalties and free kicks for the most minor bits of contact (incentivising players like Neymar to dive routinely). Compare this to the game earlier in the 1900s where defenders could literally just kick you and you'll see that the rules of the game are being shifted to protect attacking players more and more (probably a good thing tbh). The real reason these kinds of dribblers are a dying breed is mostly due to managers realising that teams working with highly coached systems are more effective and accordingly encouraging their teams to play in a specific, practiced way as opposed to simply having some guy run with the ball for a bit before getting tackled 90% of the time. It's also weirdly reductive to equate talent and skill simply with a player's ability to dribble. Football is about so much more than that and it's incredibly silly to equate the two

His pricetag has ruined his perception because no one speaks of the fact that as much as Neymar has been injured at key moments, without him his teams have never helped him or themselves. Fresh off a World Cup win, Ole Gunnar Solskajer's Manchester United should've been easy work for Mbappe and PSG. Especially since the round before they picked Klopp's Liverpool apart with Neymar. But a limp performance from key players saw them eliminated prematurely. In fact the only year PSG progressed in the Champions League was the year Neymar was available for the latter stages. The same can be said of Brazil. Fans criticise Neymar and claim he's overrated, overhyped etc etc yet they fail to acknowledge that without him their teams are completely toothless.
