Though a lot of players have improved, there's no way ten Hag can play his brand of football with players like De Gea, Maguire, Wan Bissaka, Fred, Mctominey, Martial etc.. this season was purely to stabilize the club and bring defensive solidity.. barring a few anomalies, the defence has been rock solid and De Gea winninf the golden glove is proof.. if proper signings suiting ten Hag's system are made, there will be further improvement next season..

@@crunch1495 he is defensively immense no doubt.. but going up front he just offers very little.. I don't remember the last time he crossed the ball into the box.. same with Dalot.. he has a very good line breaking pass but again he can't cross either.. only Shaw can cross from the flanks.. Antony doesn't put in a cross either.. so there's absolutely no attacking width from our right flank.. we need a right back like Dumfries or Frimpong who can put accurate crosses regularly to threaten opposition defences..

@@TonyTynebridge Indeed, and they all performed quite well. Antony had an okay season, with expectations blown up by a price tag he couldn't control, yet contributed in a lot of defensive scenarios. Problem was that almost all of them got severely injured during this season - Eriksen, Sabitzer, Martinez and Garnacho (brought in from youth system) had major injuries. With Antony, Malacia suffering minor injuries. On top of that Casemiro was out for a lot of games for honestly quite ridiculous red cards, considering the tackles that brought Eriksen and Garnacho out of play (at least show some consistency).

Yes he has, but there’s an awful lot of disrespect shown to Ole. He got back to back top 4 finishes and was a penalty kick away from a trophy. I think Ole’s biggest weakness was is tactical naivety. And I don’t mean that entirely as a negative. He was carried by vibes. They players loved him at first, and the fans loved that a legend was back. But for the most part, he bottled the biggest matches because there was no real tactical approach to those game, and we he did try to instill some tactics they went horribly wrong. Admittedly, some of that was down to the quality of player he had, but in truth, once the vibes faded, he started slowly losing the locker room. The Rojo incident, refusing to drop Maguire and Bruno when their form went into the gutter, and then the final nail in the coffin…Ronaldo. When he came in, the vibes were fully killed and players started to realize just how inexperienced Ole was, and how little he was learning. And at that point it was all over.

As a Liverpool fan I do worry about United's current trajectory. It reminds me of when Klopp first took over - the team had lots of gaps and holes so would lose ridiculous games, draw games 3-3 and make silly mistakes but still have top performances in pressure situations such as getting to the Europa League final. And it got ironed out over time. Once ETH gets in a few more of "his" players, they'll start thriving.

‘His’ players like Anthony, Malacia, and Martinez? It might change next year but Ten Hags underestimated the quality and physicality of the teams in the league. You can’t be leaving fullbacks free when your pressing here. Nor be weak in the air. Big switches of play, top quality attacking fullbacks, and physical strikers are things most teams have in their locker. Liverpool and Brentford murdered them this year because if it. It’s a tactical symptom of coaching by far the most dominant side in a much weaker league if you ask me. Let’s see what they do next year. They need a dominant cb to pair with Lisandro and a reliable striker

When you come in as a manager you have two decisions, adapt your tactics to the team you're given, or try and be ruthless with your philosophy and instill it in the players even if it leads to worse results. ETH has chosen the first, as a lot of managers do. It leads to decent results in the short term. Most top managers adapt to their players whilst also trying to instill their philosophy in them in the background so that after a few seasons they can play the football they want to. However, there will be a period of time where the manager has to make that jump from adapting their tactics to playing the football they want to and it is in this period that the results will worsen, they won't have the control to play exactly how they want, but won't have the defensive solidity of the adapted tactics ETH currently uses. There will be a period when United go from defensive/high press football to possession based football and this will be when they go on a poor run of form

Arsenal got demolished in several games during Arteta's first two seasons, as he zigzagged a bit between those two approaches. At some point, you have try, knowing some of your players may not be ready for the transition to a new system. I think ETH has done well enough to deserve some slack.

@@ComradeOgilvy1984 yeh I agree ETH has done well so far but I think a lot of United fans think he's solved a lot of problems when he hasn't so far, he's mainly been successful because after the first 2 games getting demolished he reverted back to the Ole style counter attacking football that his players are comfortable with. The team are still yet to make that transition to a possession based team and I think they're due a bad run of games when that happens. Arteta's FA cup victory in his first season probably saved him from the sack in his 1st full season when Arsenal went on that awful run, we'll see if the United board have enough faith in ETH when he tries to make that transition

@ComradeOgilvy1984 11 ай бұрын
@@benedictharrison2819 I agree that ETH is very likely to hit a bad run of games, as he stretches players more and more out of their comfort zone. There is talent on this MU roster, but how they should fit together into a spirited attacking team is a bit murky. I hope the MU board shows strong support for the next three transfer periods -- I think that is what it is going to take. I am a Liverpool fan, and I appreciate that ETH chose a non-usual lineup that was ready to battle energetically at Old Trafford early in this last season, and they they are also willing to come out of their shell and really attack, too. That seemed promising to me. (The demolition at Anfield I fault the players for, not ETH.)

I think we can control games more by buying better players in key positions, starting with the keeper. Onana going to Chelsea without even being linked to us is embarrassing but there are still plenty of ball playing keepers out there that we can sign. Then we need to reinforce the spine of the team with players that raise the technical ceiling of the squad and not the floor. Hence why I’m confused that Ten Hag is going for a Mason Mount type of 8 compared to wanting a FDJ last season. Mount is good but also avg and not a significant enough improvement on the likes of Fred. But we could be a much better side with just 4 signings this summer.

That's all true, but I think a big problem of this united is not being able to complete the chances created. Martial and Weghorst were just there wasting chances created by Antony, Eriksen and obviously Bruno (who created more chances than anyone in the prem) I think the solution is just get better depth in the squad, some signings. Also, another big problem, is just mentality. Manchester United does not know how to deal with a match that is not going according to plan, and Ten Hag during March and April where the most difficult games took place, didnt know how to change the approach after half-time. You could argue that in that time, key players were injured, but we still had Bruno, Rashford and Lindelof did quite a good job when needed, so i think it was just ten hag not adapting well to the circunstances. Generally, I think United is better now, they have a sense of identity again. I think the squad is suffering from signings of the past. United is investing money like any other top team, but in the wrong players. They need to listen Ten Hag and get him the players he wants.

I think having to constantly play in transition because we don't have a striker, and not being able to play a high line to force more attacking turnovers because of the Keeper, full back and #8 situation is also why he plays the way he does. I don't think he is really able to implement the playstyle he actually wants to, and that comes down tk personnel. I have no doubt that the style changes with different ans better players.

In the Arsenal - ManU game (just one example), Zinchenko actually couldn't come in as an inverted midfielder till Anthony was subbed off, as he was basically kept busy the entire time. The pressing system you have shown isnt a very bad one. The problem it has got is that when you have players like erikson and Bruno who arent good at tracking that run when switch is being made to the free opposition player. If he gives up his marker to another and shifts accordingly, the whole team shifts from one side to another in solit of seconds, but you need deep coordination between players and the physical strength to do that. Every player has to be on the same line to do that,at united it doesnt. Bruno is great at pressing forward but relatively poir at tracking back. Rashford is another. Even if the shifts is made, the rapid rate in which the team attain the defensive position would nullify the attack easily. Rashford dorsnt do that. Shaw cant come and become aggressive because he will leave a winger free. So the fullback will run through entire field and at defensive third,a midfielder tries to engage leaving his marker free and organisational failure, ultimately leading to a chance for the opponents. Better athletic players will prevent this but ten hag really seem to favour Bruno and Rashford. The only problem for me is that they will be great for the teams when they have good games, when they dont, they look awful, are passengers for whole team because they dont contribute defensively.

Its been a weird season but ultimately I would say yes. There has been heavy, embarrassing defeats and there have been sporadic good performances. I believe ETH has produced the best he can with these set of players. Many times this season, he has tactically set us up well, however the players fail to execute at key moments - that sort of thing is out of the managers hands. When Anthony takes a shot rather than passes, or when Rashford does the same, we are letting thr opposition off. Tactically, hes set us up to win games by comfortable margins, 3/4/5 nil but our players have failed to happpen. Lastly, we have too many players who are still far too comfy playing Ole, counter attacking style of play. We continue to be a reactive team rather tham proactive.

There isn't much difference in tactics, it's more difference in player quality. Ole had Maguire, McFred and an underdeveloped AWB, so he had no option of gaining control of the match and had to rely on sitting back and countering. ETH has Martinez to solidify the back, which allows Casemiro and Eriksen to unleash their creativity going forward and improve ball control, a massive improvement on McFred. Plus, AWB and Dalot have been much better, giving United the opportunity to progress the ball on either flank, rather than just relying on Shaw to overload the wings. I think they're a deadly striker and another solid CB away from consistency.

The casual writing off of Ole's team as a Counter attacking unit relying solely on Bruno's passing and Rashford, James and Martial's quick game play is appalling. You are forgetting United were very strong on the left hand side of the field, Rashford was injured for majority of 20/21 and Pogba used to start at that position. The trio of Shaw, Pogba and Bruno used to overload on the left, and cross the ball to Martial / Greenwood / Cavani for finishing. The team had a brilliant start in the 21/22 season until a certain someone arrived. Sancho was also an unnecessary signing. Pogba used to start ahead of Fred in CM, if Rashford started but would move up the left again if Fred was introduced later for Martial or Rashford. His hat trick of assists was from the left. James was almost always on the bench, so you don't even have Ole's main team on the board to do a proper analysis.

There is nothing to suggest Solskjær could not have gotten a more positive team scoring more goals had he had players like Martinez, Varane and Casemiro at the back, who are world class both defensively and in transition. Maguire is not that quick, Fred and McTominay are not good in possession, United lacked a right winger and both Martial and Rashford did better from the left. These are personnel problems. Solskjærs United were a more than ok side, finishing 2nd in the league and having some decent ucl performances, but lacking in a few positions that meant they were unable to break down worse teams, relying almost completely on the brilliance of either Rashford, Bruno or Pogba.

Maguire was signed because Mourinho wanted him, and Wan-Bissaka was one of about 100 right backs the club scouted.
