Brighton and Hove Albion won a lot of football fans over with their free-flowing, attacking football that seen them claim Europa League qualification under Roberto De Zerbi's guidance.
But this season they have suffered from a stuttering start in both the Premier League and Europe - struggling against Everton, Fulham and AEK Athens in recent games.
Is it a rough patch for Brighton, or are they being found out? Jon Mackenzie is joined by Liam Tharme to analyse just how BHAFC's season has been so far.

Injuries are a pretty big factor. Brighton have looked a lot worse since Estupiñán's injury. Lamptey was supposed to be the LB replacement but now he's injured too. Although I like Milner, he's just nowhere near as much of an attacking threat. Obviously the midfield is a lot weaker than last season as well. Baleba is still getting into the swing of things. It will get better.

Estupinian definitely has had an impact. Should be back quite soon, guessing after the international break so they can let him rest in that time without having to make uncomfortable excuses.

With so many podcasts and instant reactions online, a team can be 'really good' one week and 'been found out' few weeks later. Teams learn and adapt all the time. They will be back.

Viewers just can't. get. enough. of content, apparently. Waiting in desperation for the weekends to come just to spend the whole evening in front of TV, treating every game like it's the end of the world. Thinking games as discrete events rather than continuous... And channels like this feast off this desperation. Reason why I'm sceptical of football podcasts, gotta have the radical element that sets it apart from the others.

Brighton are doing well considering their maiden season in Europe having to balance the rigours of football in all its aspects. I will say that they are still doing well. :)

to me it's more about getting a healthy 1st team quality LB because the CMs need quality to connect with if we want to play through opponents the way we did last year. If Estupinan is going to miss more time, Brighton needs to buy a LB in the winter window

I think Brighton biggest issue is their front players are rotating far too much, yes they need to rotate but seems like every game the front 3-4 players are always different and making chemistry/consistency hard to come by. They need to lock in a few players who they look at and say hey 90% of the games your starting. I would build around Ferguson, Mitoma, and Fati with the 4th attacker changing depending on the opponent

Another reason City been so good over the years, you don’t see them messing with their lineup in EPL and CL, they only really rest players for domestic cups and even then they play a good amount of starters

@@colouredIncognito game time is not the same as starting, go look at who starts most their game. Haaland 100% in EPL and CL, Walker 93% in EPL and CL, Alvarez 100% in EPL, Rodri 85% in EPL and CL, etc, their players usually only miss if they are injured/suspended. Of course they rotate here and there especially during FA and Caraboa but they do an excellent job of always fielding their best XI during EPL and CL to keep consistency with the squad

I think it's Dunk first, Pervis second. Dunk has probably been one of the best defenders this season, with the innumerable times he's saved Brighton.

I agree. Having another extremely fast threat up the left side with Mitoma that can also whip in crosses is usually what gets Brighton their best chances against top teams. Without Pervis they sacrifice the offense for a solid defender, or sacrifice the defense for starting Solly March. Sidenote: having all 4 players who have played LB thus far get injured and having to play your best CM at LB would be a deadly blow to almost every team in the world

A team so well oriented as Brighton doesn't have a "glue" that holds the team together, nearly every single player in the team is essential when in-form, you can make a solid argument for almost all of them.

The main issue is having to play in Europe. Last season we could play pretty much the same team every week. But now players have to be rotated more and this has led to more injuries. Caicedo was also great at stopping counter attacks, Brighton have signed baleba as his replacement but he hasn’t really solidified his spot in the team yet.

Losing Caicedo was a bigger problem then they had anticipated, he was integral to our Brighton built up in the first phase of play and he was excellent out of possession.. they have not been able to replace those qualities hencewhy they have fallen off so much

There's only so much quality you can lose and replace with lower quality with an impact emerging with lower performance or results, agree. But they did make a shed-load of money.

@@jimspence8653 Had some good wins but more recently Brighton look like they're up against it - it does seem teams have figured a counter-tactic and Brighton with injuries and loss of high quality players will struggle more this season. It's same with any break-out hit team: Next season is always tougher even without losing players.

lol they've been figured out because a lot of Italian coaches always have circuit routine patterns of play that over time grow stale and become predictable. Happened with Sarri and Conte. Too many analysts at this level of football for it to work long term.

Great analysis! Tuppence worth, Gilmour has been very good. He still has a 90%+ success rate, despite playing an enormous amount of passes. Groß; as excellent as he is, is taking more of the creative expression in the midfield, leaving more for Gilmour to do physically. The answer isn’t to get a bigger, stronger DM, it’s recognising what Groß brought playing coming in from the right back position, particularly in the run in last season, and filling it/changing style. Milner was signed for this, but he is at the other end of his career, as is Groß, and Milner needs time to adapt to RDZ. The other thing is Ferguson. He’s in and out the team for a reason. And Welbeck was the runner with the nous to stretch and offer space for the CMs to advance. Ferguson isn’t that.

injuries have definitely played a factor. Also them now in europe have taken a toll on them, also the constant rotation from RDZ is frustrating

Usually they can find someone new to replace players who have gone. I think losing McCallister AND Caicedo plus all the injuries has really hurt them

That's why the next transfer window is important, let's see if other EPL clubs scavenge what's left of Brighton or Brighton replenish their stock of talents. Their scouts are at busy work as we speak.

Brighton now only buy younger forwards to sell in the future, or players who're less expensive. it's all money issue. their recruitment is good for earning money but not for sastaining the team.

Brighton's recuitment is usually very good, but last summer they should have got a proper RB instead of Mlner, which was a weird signing, and Igor at LCB looks to be a waste of £15m, which is why Dunk is having to play LCB this season.

@@jontysimson Seems like they should have got a starting LCB though (to replace Colwill who played well alongside Dunk last season), rather than another backup CB and play Dunk at RCB. De Zerbi doesn't seem to like Igor much.

Nope. I just think we have some injuries and new players. If you look at it statistically, we are actually slightly above on points than where we were at last season at this point. We will stay consistent and improve over time.

Brighton have more points now than they had at the same stage last season. This despite absences through injury for Enciso, March, Lampty, Welbeck, Estupinian and Moder. New players are still learning the system but the team is playing well, just not scoring sufficient goals in the last few games.

Moder was injured in April 2022 and has recently played for Albion’s under 21 side. He is on his way back.

Didn't you get most of those points under Potter at the start of last season though? Your form under De Zerbi has often fluctuated quite a bit - it's rare that Brighton go more than a game or two without a draw or a defeat. Which is why he's averaged a little over 1.5 ppg in 40+ PL games as the manager. That average over a season probably gets you 8th-10th this year given how competitive the top half is compared to 22-23.

No. Potter’s left in September, 8 games into the 22/23 season after 1 loss, 2 draws and 5 wins. The rest of the season was under to De Zerbi with more wins than draws and losses combined.

The last 6 Premiership games have seen 2 losses and 4 draws. This at a time when the squad are playing in Carabo, FA Cup and Europa Cup games and have been unsettled through a series of injuries.

They have 19 points from 12 games, last season after 12 games they had 21 points. They're 2 points worse off than they were last year despite losing Caicedo, MacAllister and Sanchez and having to contend with European football. Plus they have injuries to key players. No, they haven't been "found out".

They seem to be struggling with a congested fixture list with playing in uefa competitions. They are not the only team that struggled with this. West ham had the same issue last season, although they won the competition,their league games were awful

The headline is a bit disingenuous. As a neutral, yes theres been a difference in how they play. And yes the Prem teams have more familiarity. But generally speaking, the stats aside, I'd say that they are doing brilliantly considering they sold key players, injuries and their first season in Europe. So while keeping their Prem position going, they are adjusting as they go and rebuilding the team. I'd be happy if I were a Brighton fan.

No they haven’t. Yes injuries haven’t helped but I’ve been preaching this since they beat United - They don’t have consistency. They can play very well against teams but the next game, they’ll fold like a piece of paper against fairly unchallenging teams. They don’t have many solid players who can play 7/10 week in, week out.

You have to understand the team is in transition, tell me any team in the world that over 2 seasons can continually lose 2/3 of their best players and not need to recalibrate. The secret is the recruitment, facilities and nurturing of talent, no being ‘found out’ here. Only thing being found out is how talented our manager is and in Tony we trust.

None of our losses have been by being tactically found out. It’s simply us not being clinical enough when we’re on top. Which is easily fixed with time. The number of injuries is the biggest factor considering our injured xi is arguably better than our fit xi. RDZ is still a brilliant manager and reactionary content like this is the reason so many managers come under pressure for what is realistically no reason at all.

They're not similar, and Ten Hag abandoned his philosophy after his poor start to the first season. There's a clear blueprint of how De Zerbi wants to play, and the team reflects that. Not the same case with MU.

What are you talking about donwfall in fact teams like Arsenal have actually got better before last season Arsenal weren’t even in the top four other than Chelsea I wouldn’t say any of the other “big teams” have got worse as United have had there troubles for awhile long before Newcastle and Villa were challenging near the top. Villa are only 5 points off top and Newcastle are only 7 points off and they both still look fantastic to me

I think the reason why Brighton played so well is because of Graham Potter, since he left they have been steadily declining

it's not true. last sean under DZB was much better than Potter. Things have changed so many injuries after selling main players. Potter was just lucky with full members.

@@akas224 exactly my point, Potter left Brighton last season so his influence on the team was still there. Do you really think a coach like DZB could just come in and make a team play cohesively in such a short space of time like that? It was all Potter's work.

@@Eric_SA Ｉdidn't deny Potter was great. I denyed "since he left they have been sreadily declining" . Brighton finished 6 th after Potter left which wasn't declining , but progressing.

@Eric_SA Yes and no. I followed brighton throughout 22-23 season and their style of play changed drastically post-world cup. Dezerbi took charge pretty early but he knew that changing the style quickly would be horrible for the team. I think he gave them time to adapt and didnt invoke dezerbis style until late december in my opinion. If you look at past matches youll see it is very different. What potter did was create a good squad and helped with some wins but thats it. RDZ is responsible to make sure brighton didnt fall too hard with the changes

@@ilirianzuta6852 No he didnt change their style of play because the foundation was already laid, he only changed their formation to 4-2-2-2. No manager could just come in the middle of the season with no pre season and make the team play the way they were playing. De Zerbi is not responsible for the way Brighton play, its all Graham Potter, sooner or later people will realize that, mark my words

In my opinion De Zerbi just isn't as good as everyone thought. He took Brighton over from Potter, the team was already very good, he just carried them over on that positive wave until the end of the season. This year they are still very good but I'd argue not as good as in the last campaign. Obviously, European competition is also a factor so it's not that easy to judge.

Imagine losing your two best midfielders and expect to be as good as the last season… Brighton without dz would not be a mid table team.

@@gianvidal What I said is I don't think De Zerbi is as good as people think but there are factors that work in his favor such as the outgoing transfers and the injuries. I wouldn't look into the transfers too much because the team has changed drastically all over so the midfield outgoings should not be as damaging. Regardless, we will only be able to judge him after his first full season and maybe not even then. Also, I get it, English is not your first language but it's not an excuse for completely flipping my comment upside down or your overenthusiastic approach to De Zerbi.

The most overrated team in recent year, i dont get the hype yea they play good but we have seen things like this before. People are just hyping up players like Mitoma becuase hes japanese, Mc Allister because he is a messi look alike and many more

I think they're hyped because they have been playing much "better" teams off the park with an attractive, progressive style of play rather than the usual overperformers' hard-to-break-down 4-4-2. And also their ability to discover and then nurture young talent to then sell on for huge profits (Cucurella, Mac Allister, Caicedo) without it affecting the team's success (well maybe until now...). Plenty of teams in the past have done either of these things but rarely both at the same time.

idk how they are overrated no idea why you are mentioning Mac Alister he plays for Liverpool now lol and they also sold Caicedo in summer anyway Brighton are 7th place atm and with the quality of players Brighton have 5th 6th 7th 8th is where they should be imo don't think anyone predicted them to get top 4
