We have a job coming up that is going to require a lot of pipe welding on small bore pipe. Sockets, flanges, butt welds and more. In this video we are going to brush up on some technique and show you how it's done in the process.
We will be using the Everlast 250EX at about 115 amps, a 3/32 E3 Tungsten electrode, and 15 CFH of pure Argon gas.

Thanks for this Bob, really helpful. Doing some 2" schedule 40 right now and really struggling to get that kind of cap profile & ripple pattern. Pipe welding not my forte at all so hats off to all those guys who I see turning out stunning looking welds. So frustrating & I just cannot get the walking the cup thing going at all, seem not to get the weld to advance

Great video, very informative, well done. In a discussion at the shop, I told the guys I'm learning how to tig weld much better by watching your videos. One of them asked me if I could get a welding job from a you tube agreement. I said no but if I learned enough from the vids and practice, maybe I could pass a certain welding test. They quit laughing at me. I really have learned more than you can imagine from these vids and a few others. And it shows by looking at some of my first tig welds and the welds I do now. Thank you very much. Dan

Since so many loves to go on about imperial vs metric, I'll kind of jump on that bandwagon, and mention that 1/4'' isn't "almost equal to" or *≈* as the video says, to 6,35 mm, but *exactly equal to" or = . Because, as far as I remember, 1 inch is defineds as 25.4 mm, so 1/4 inch = 6.35. Thanks for the the conversions, and the video. :)

In my job we had hundreds of feet of 306 SS 1 inch pipe that carried acids, and other cleaning chemicals. Always had pinholes show up and had to try and weld a patch and always either a chemical or a flush water inside. And or course up very high in the steel trusses and next to other pipes, talk about a piece of work. Don't miss it.

Then you can add in a wire-feeder, and that has a push button.... I've tried this a few times, it's easy to get crossed up. For me, will take a lot of practice, lot of concentration! It can go pretty well with all switches, and control from the various front panels. So, torch switch, wire-feeder pendant switch, and foot switch for the positioner.
@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 6 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to say there, that if things have variable foot control you're sort of dancing, and it's a lot easier to get lost, so I tried to simplify it by only having switches. It was confusing enough! But you could definitely see the possibilies.

Great video ! I have a question for you Bob, since it's a small diameter pipe it will get hot very quickly, should I then decrease the amperage as i progress from 6 o'clock to 12 ? like 15 amps lower every quarter of the weld ? I mean the weld bead will be much larger on hotter metal than a cooler one using the exact same amperage, what do you think ?

hello im also a tig welder with the boilermakers in ontario canada local 555 and also have a 250ex everlast machine. it came with a wp-26 torch with a trigger on it didnt like that too much took along time to get used to that. i would like to get a torch that would run with the 250ex with no trigger and the foot pedal. ive subed to your channel along time ago and like your videos keep them comming brother.
@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 6 жыл бұрын
I use that machine, you can get a factory foot pedal or an aftermarket one, as far as I can tell they both work. You just unplug the torch switch connector and plug in the foot pedal. You don't need a new torch, but of course there's a lot of them out there. I think the torch switch is really handy sometimes!

mild steel is great for chill water pipe flow or air/c02/02/water on jobs iv been on. it is cheap and holds well if correct techniques are used. on butt joints they do fail testing sometimes , but Iv seen lots fail on socket welds joints, leaks with water and when testing air you literally hear it whistle. but that is on the welder who are apprentices or welders who are not exp. usually it is the welder who gets air in the weld and doesn't grind out the porosity enough and re-welds that causes the leaks. I run 180-200amps on my sockets, but I MOVE and take OFF and they come butter smooth, 8 years iv been pipe welding never had a socket come back to be that fail pressure testing.

I like that your so calm about how u explain things. Very easy to learn from. Unfortunately I don't own a fancy tig with a foot pedal. Could you possibly do some 6 mm (I'm Australian I don't subscribe to imperialism haha) flat plate fit ups with a lift tig? Im having trouble with not making a mess on start and stop with arc flare. Don't have the advantage of tapering off the amps. Thanks!!

You always seem to fit up with a gap about the size of the filler rod, is there a reason for that or is it just example? Where I work everyone just butts the pipe/plate together, no gap between the bevels, is this a bad practice?
@MoparStephen
@MoparStephen 6 жыл бұрын
Much better penetration with the gap.
@TheGmanamaya
@TheGmanamaya 6 жыл бұрын
preferences every welder welds different . but on small bore pipe id take a tigther gap so i can just walk the root and knock it out quick so i dont put too much heat on it rather then fingering it. it all depends on what the welder wants. is your job a stainless job with thin gauge pipe? I worked for Budweiser and couple other companies with very thin pipe, were we have to use that butt up with no bevel because we cant put a bevel on it, too thin. so unless it is a job that is similar to what i described then it is OK.! In my exp. Bob might have some other words in his exp/knowledge about jobs like that.

@AATopFuel 6 жыл бұрын
I would never use a butt weld on a roll cage. If you are going to try that, then I would use a 4 inch long tight fitting piece of CM tubing inside of the outer CM tube. 2 inches on each side with a bevel much like what Bob is showing above. If you try to grind the weld then expect NHRA to poo poo it or you would have to be really good at hiding the weld. I hope this helps. Later.
