One of my professors in college (this particular class met once a week) would have us close our eyes and do some motivational talk and trying to get us to forget about everything that’s going on outside the class. One of the things, I remember, every week she would say something about noticing your feet on the ground and just being attached to the earth. And honestly, that shit helped me get into the rhythm of the class and just be grounded and mentally prepped.

The way neuro and physio-typical people perceive differently abled people is real strange. Almost a weird sense of jealousy.
@appearsred
@appearsred 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChezzaOuttaNowhere such people are just very insecure due to failing to achieve what they desire, as well as feeling lonely and not appreciated/recognised by people. They get so desperate to get the attention they're unable to get with their set of skills that it makes them jealous someone can actually have it (even when it's mere courtesy) - it's similar to how misogynists always focus on how "men are expected to open doors/carry things" whenever there's an argument about women's rights, as if it's relevant and the "extra niceties" they bring up are at all comparable to the issues discussed. Similarly, they will find any excuse to think to themselves that when someone else has what they want it is undeserved, and must be due to (for example) disability, since everyone is "too nice" - they can't face the fact that they're just not good enough. They almost wish they were in the same situation as they know they wouldn't get the "attention" otherwise, convincing themselves that even mere courtesy is some kind of special treatment (that they crave but can't have), therefore demonising it and staying ignorant to all the issues that come with disabilities. It all stems from hurt egos that are too fragile to face reality, and it's honestly pathetic.

I've been repping singular They pronoun since I was in elementary because of that one shit teacher, mainly because I was disgusted that she tried to incorrectly correct me lol. But I think it was a great coincidence, I ended up being nonbinary. I think it's insane that someone can grow up speaking a whole language where they regularly use singular They, and not even realize they do it. That teacher sucked, I'm sorry you went through that.

"alpha male" sounds like boys who are emotionally stunted and neglected but instead of doing the work to identify their trauma/triggers just grew up into hurt men. the real boss move is to introspectively look within yourself and notice the shortcomings you have and deal with them and lean on others when you need help. @@pepperchan6471 seek a professional. not a motivational seeker or weird people with 0 credibility trying to steal your money, i mean a therapist. i'm of the belief that relying on friends and seeking help with family can lead to more harm than good, because not everyone is equipped to handle someone else's baggage and it's frankly not fair to expect that of everyone at all times. you shouldn't be relying on friends or family for your mental well-being, that'll only drag you both down to the ground. you'll slowly ruin all your relationships by constantly dumping negativity on everyone around you and hoping to get positivity out of other people. you need to learn how to be stable and functional on your own first, and getting therapy might help you get your footing for that.

@pepperchan6471 2 жыл бұрын
@@ayatoculus @kirin I'm not saying I like motivational speakers or anything, I find them cringey too. And yes, I know that one should not use friends or family as an emotional dumpster, because from a young age my own parents have unloaded their emotional baggage on me, effectively fucking me up. However, a lot of people in my position CANNOT AFFORD THERAPY, and live in shitty countries where seeking help for mental problems is a huge stigma. I'm a minor, and am trapped in a abusive household and have no money. Lots of kids out there like me. Worst thing is that this is normal in my country. Services for child protection won't do shit. So I understand if someone turns to Motivational Speakers as a last desperate resort. It is easy to attract and manipulate emotionally vulnerable and lonely people.
@kamabokogonpachiro5038
@kamabokogonpachiro5038 2 жыл бұрын
@@ayatoculus that sounds much like victim blaming, also as the other comments said not everyone can afford a therapist, especially while being underage and in a non-supportive household. Or maybe they tried and had a bad experience (I got a shitty therapist [which my mom didnt even actually get for my mental health, she just wanted to get a paper saying that I needed a support dog or whatever so our dog could stay home] that costed hundreds and they literally just made me feel like shit and my mom got angry at me for "exaggerating" things. I know this was only 1 therapist and doesn't reflect on all the others, but lmao my mom ain't taking me to another one since she got the paper for the dog. Also, saying that you shouldn't rely on friends or family is only your personal belief. My friends have been what are keeping me floating and alive. I understand than friends are not professionals and they are not equipped to help with your emotional baggage, but that isn't what it is about. It's just about having someone who you know likes you despite you thinking that you're shit. They just listen to me, I listen to them and then we play games together and forget the bad things. It's one of the only times I'm happy and having fun.

Motivational speakers are a lot like fake psychics in that they say incredibly generic things but their audience is going to interpret those generic sayings to apply to their specific situation without even realizing it so they will attribute wisdom or knowledge to the psychic or speaker. It's a natural human instinct to relate to other humans and relate what other humans are saying to our situation. It's a basic part of human empathy. Unfortunately con artists know this and they use it to manipulate people. Which is why so many people believe in horoscopes and those psychics that claim to speak to your dead relatives and motivational speakers apparently.

I think you're right, Kurtis: I think his parents raised him constantly bullying him and tearing down his confidence and telling him that they were making him stronger. It happens to a LOT of kids. And now he's so lacking in confidence that he has to do this motivational speaking FOR FREE to make himself feel better. Yikes.

People who dismiss mental health issues with statements like "just stop being uncomfortable with yourself" make me so angry. It's like sir, if I could, don't you think I would have by now? My mental health issues are not things that I can turn on and off at will, and it makes me so angry when people like him say that like it's the most obvious thing.

I think one exception to the "motivational speakers bad" idea is in the context of high schools. Sometimes high schools invite motivational speakers and it can do some good. Many teenagers struggle with anxiety, depression, fear of the future, directionlessness, etc. Sometimes what they need is motivation, to hear from someone with experience that everything's going to be okay.

As a part time wheelchair user, I wish people were too nice! They act like I'm not a human when in a wheelchair, cutting me off, pushing past me, and then fake apologize when they kick my legs even though they looked at me before cutting me off. You saw me, you are not sorry otherwise you wouldn't have done it. They regularly refuse to move from the wheelchair area on the train. Or infantilising me. Or adults just staring for very long amounts of time, actually turning around to continue staring as I pass. Because "I don't look disabled" so why would a young person be in a wheelchair. Adult men stare so much more at me than children, it is scary.
