Tile layout explained, Day by day issues when building a shower Part 3. Tile layout is one of the most important things to get right when tiling a shower. If you don't put some thought into it and plan out the best possible tile layout for your tile installation, be it a wall floor or whatever the tile surface may be, you could end up with tile slivers or undesirable cuts. Never start in a corner and just start tiling, always take measurements, and dry lay some tile to use as a reference when planning your layout. In this video I try to explain how i planned the layout of this large shower area to avoid small sliver cuts in the corner and where the tile ends at the edge of the shower. I also explain How I figured out what the tile cuts would be at the ceiling, floor knee wall and floating corner seat. I find it more convenient to use millimeters for working with tile. Most of it comes from outside the US and has size specified in mm.

I switched to metric a few years back. I prefer Sigma cutters, so the change was immediately helpful, no pencil marks required for basic cuts. I also like the simplicity of the measurements. I’ll never go back.

yea we use metric in aus, seems so weird hearing someone tile in inchs like why hahaha

@@hunterhofman3555 I also wonder why - here in Canada we have an odd tradition using of imperial measurements in construction. As a result, it’s very difficult to find a proper, all metric tape measure. I lately must shop online, and even there the selection is very limited. Only one size available: 8 m.

mm just order from over here maybe. most tapes here do have mm, cm, inchs and foot in the one but we talk cm and mm. only time i hear someone say 1 inch is when something is about 3cms and instead of saying 3cm they just say about a inch hahaha@@seanmellows1348

Sal, I noticed you marked your vertical line about an inch and a half from where the transition to drywall is. Do you always stop it a little bit before? What if the shower curb on the bottom ends directly on the transition?

It's always outside the wet area and I draw a new line for the tile

@@SalDiBlasi do you leave a gap behind for tile to slide into then or notch the tile around? Seems counter intuitive. Any specific reason you place the sill first?
