It at least, there's the "on call" option since places have, at least in Australia. You get paid a flat amount for being available when on call, but as soon as you are requested, you get a minimum 1 hours pay to deal with whatever situation crops up, even if you deal with it within 10 minutes.

I assure you that in the US this sort of thing is a common ask. I work in telecommunications which is a 24/7 service. The company must have 24/7 availability for technical issues that sprout up but does not want to staff or pay for it.

And they wouldn't pay him until he arrived at the site they wanted him at. Driving to the work office to pick up the equipment and tools specific to the job and from there to the site didn't count. I honestly don't get the mentality of companies who demand you work the maximum number of hours they're allowed by law before overtime becomes mandatory are entitled to additional compensation, bitch if you go one minute over that time but think they're entitled to a single minute of your time outside their designated hours for free. If you're a business that has work outside the standard 9-5 that frequently needs to be done outside that 9-5, maybe you shouldn't try to bleed dry that 40 hr availability within the 9-5 window from everyone.

Yeah and france contacting outside of work is illegal. And the rest of the world is all downhill from there. You live in a bubble of where it's good. Everwhere in the world it's either what the video shows or worse.
