How to time your 88-95 Chevy/GMC truck with a 350 TBI
In the video I say 88-98. This will only work for 88-95.
96+ is vortec and it involves using a scan tool to time the engine.

my 1994 Silverado is located in the same area on the bottom of the square dash/ lower glove compartment...advanced it 4 degrees due to running some mods and bigger holley tbi 670cfm...

Thank you this helped a lot, never would have looked under dash. Suburban Ranch had me lookin under the hood. Guy who owned the truck before me had it set to about 3deg advanced. Not gonna lie it ran and started better advanced. Anyone else run it advanced?

Easy thanks. Forum guys were saying if your trucks over 100K miles. 4 degrees is good pace to time, as the trucks were very tame timed from the factory 0 setting. 3-6 is better for the SBC

Idk if you can do a 98 this way. Mine has the spider injector on it. Im a little off time, and am under the impression have to use a scanner

Yeah I need to change the years in the title. I believe the vortec engines with spider injectors have to have a scanner to change timing

Yes, it is not fun at all. That special distributor tool helps out a lot. It would be nice if the bolt wasn't like 2 inches long though

What if there's no timing tab like on your truck. Just a single notch on timing cover and timing light shows it to be at a 3 o'clock position. Even when the timing connecter is unplugged

You can buy a timing tab from most parts stores. They bolt to the timing chain cover with 2 bolts usually. Its not THAT hard to do but it is kind of difficult. You should be able to do it without taking anything else off. What the old school guys would do is just listen to the engine when timing it. Turn the distributor until it started to bog down or not run right, then turn it the other way until it did the same thing, then turn it the other way again until you're about in the middle, between the two spots it started to not run right. That should get you close enough. For fine tuning though you need a timing tab.

@@black91silverado82 I am one of those old school guys. Yeah I've done it that way before. This has the plastic timing cover and cs. Ànd all kinds of shit all around it. No clear pathway to any of the cover bolts. Still don't like doing it by ear. Got it close enough now it starts right up and shuts right off with no run on. I carb swapped my 2000 Tahoe and my timing light has the dial back feature on it so I know exactly how much timing I'm advancing or regarding just very difficult to see that single notch with all that crap in the way. @@shanemcclaran3012 No problem! On my 91 I had a chrome aftermarket timing cover. I was able to take out the 2 bolts for the timing tab basically by feel because you couldn't really see anything.. and that was a 2wd truck. My 95, which is the one in the video, is 4x4 and it has a lot more in the way. Not sure id be able to change the timing tab on it without removing stuff

Aren't you supposed to shut the motor off and disconnect the battery after you get it timed I want before you plug it back in and I found that if I didn't do that I was getting spark knock where I wanted it not that spark knock

So on manual timing im on the money but after i plug the wire in its off. Is that okay?

When you set your timing with that wire unplugged, that is your initial timing. When you plug the wire in, the computer takes over and advances it so it will be off from where you had it before you plugged the wire back in. Everything should be okay as long as it's still running good

When i do the manual timing its good but when i plug my connector back in the timing mark is no where to he seen and my truck backfires when in gear whats that mean

No I never did been driving it this way all I did was adjust it while still plugged in and cranked the bolt tight it back fires at 75 mph but runs ok in yown

​​@@oliverindustries2917back firing is normally a lean issue. Higher speed not getting enough fuel? Id get my injectors cleaned and check fuel pressure Truck auto advances about 8 to 12 degrees . Every degree the wrong way is about 1/2 mpg fuel economy, so if your timing is way out, you will know cause your milage is awful. My timing was out and distributor cap bad. I was at 8 mpg, now 11mpg

Unfortunately no. I believe on the vortec engines you have to use a scan tool to adjust timing since it uses a cam sensor

@@eligames3794 you could remove the distributor and rotate the engine over so cylinder #1 is at top dead center on compression stroke. Then put the distributor back in with the rotor pointing towards #1 cylinder. For any fine tuning you will need a scan tool. Im not sure if this will throw any sort of code though on a vortec.

94 chev 350 tbi what causes surging in timing bypass mode "ONLY"! that's tan/black stripe wire unplugged to set timing. I've hunted every where unknown no info I suspect the pickup coil weak. FAILED in Calif Emissions testing other wise RUNS PERFECT PLUGED IN NORMAL everything passed except the slight surging in unplugged tan/black wire and the timing is reading zero! everything else passed suppose to idle smoothly in bypass!

With that tan/black wire unplugged it gets rid of the timing advance on your distributor so it allows you to set base timing. I would guess that your base timing is not set right and you need to adjust your distributor with that wire unplugged and then plug it back in once you're done. Other than that it could need a tune up maybe.

@@black91silverado82 What exactly I said still states idle timing is 0° with the tan /blk wire "DISCONNECTED" surging b.s. starts fluctuating r.p.m. pluged in B.S. STOPS steady R.P.M.

Dont advance it. Once you plug back the connector it self advances

This is for setting the base timing, then the computer takes over with the connector plugged in and will set the advance as you drive.
