I brewed 2 1/2 cups dark roast coffee in my french press this morning. I don't go through all the stirring, I just stir it once after I pour it, and let it sit for maybe 3 mins, then drink. It's my 2nd favorite brewing method, behind the pourover - which I use a 50 y/o ceramic one.

amateur tip: always make 10-20% more than you actually want to drink or fits in a cup :) this makes sure that you don't get the residue (used coffee grounds) into your cup. Some people don't mind the "grainy feel", though (like me, e.g.)

Always pre heat press and filter and coffee cups. Pour hot water to just top the coffee grind in the pot then let bloom for 30 seconds, then pour in rest of water, stir lightly, place filter in pot a few inches to keep heat in, stir again one minute later, replace filter then wait 2 more minutes, then slooowwly plunge filter down to bottom of pot and pour coffee into cup.. If being extra particular, pour brewed coffee through another small metal mesh filter to catch any small grinds.
@gamester711
@gamester711 6 жыл бұрын
It's a widely held misconception that the grind should be rather course. You should go as fine as you can without getting too mush sediment. Your coffee will taste richer, and you will use less. Try a setting of 26 on the Baratza.

it 's kind of a standard from the SCAA to get an even extraction for a cup of coffee. 1 part coffee to 16.6 parts water. Some go as low as 1 to 12 or high as 1 to 18 but generally in that range will get a decent cup.
@Sumguy21
@Sumguy21 8 жыл бұрын
At 4:44 you mention you don't stir the process. But why not enhance extraction by stirring? Forget time, if it's too slow! Can we then substitute some time by stirring? Thank you for reading my comment.

Thanks for the tips! I would suggest some improvement if you please. Firstly, do not put all the water in one time. Just put a little, wait for the gaz to escape, then gently put the rest of the water. Doing this way, the coffee grinds won't mix with the foam and you won't need to use the spoon to imerge the coffee. Once the brewing is over, you should use that spoon to get that delicious pure foam, and put it into your cup! Then press down, or just put the press on top of the coffee and verse the coffee like some people do. I never tried this last tip but i will do soon. Cheers!

The brew ratio is incorrect in this video. The standard is 12 to 1 for French Press. Joe's ratio of 16 to 1 works for Chemex, but that ratio yields a very thin and watery cup out of the French Press.

I like that everyone is sharing their way of making coffee and how to make it taste better but what about information on how much caffeine each way have, antioxidants and other healthy things? Can you tell me if doing it with the french press would have more antioxidant? I read that the amount of caffeine won't fade away the longer the coffee sit there, that only flavor would change but not healthy benefits. Is this truth? Thanks for sharing.
@VT-mw2zb
@VT-mw2zb 6 жыл бұрын
Vicky Latorre antioxidants are simply chemicals that can be easily oxidised. This means if you have them in a mixture of other less readily oxidised chemicals, they will be oxidised first, thus protecting others from oxidation. Antioxidants are oxidised upon contact with air, and higher temps speed up the process. If you want to absorb those antioxidants, cool down your coffee, then drink it quickly. Metal filtered coffee has some oils in them that on average, raise your cholesterol level (LDL) by 10%. At the same time, they appears to have anticarcinogenic effect. Paper filters don't have such oils.

Good video. I would also add to press the plunger down slower and never use a metal spoon!
@consciousbean7520
@consciousbean7520 6 жыл бұрын
The no metal spoon rule is so you don't scratch the inside of your container (if you have metal one) or not break the glass (if it's a glass one). In this instance, he was simply breaking the crust of the coffee (like in cupping) not stirring the coffee grounds that may have clumped at the bottom where he would be touching the sides of the container (in that situation, a wooden or silicone paddle would be preferred for device wellbeing and longevity). This is also the reason the plunger didn't end up taking a long time to press down. When the crust sits at the top and pressure is added (pressing the filter) backforce is created due to in part a thicker solid pressing back against you) and consiquently physically slower press. With the grounds broken up, as in this video, you are really just pressing through water so far far less back pressure is created. If you prefer the thicker body in a french press, break up the crust less. This will allow for more solids to pass through the filter (more body). Lastly, if body is your goal, pour immediately after pressing before the TDS have had time to settle to the bottom. If your goal is less body, after pressing, allow for TDS to settle (2-6 min depending on desired outcome) before pouring.

Don't know why you're recommending to not bloom. This is the first thing I've seen that doesn't recommending blooming. Also, you should have a coarse grind, again not sure why you'd say the grind doesn't matter. I agree not to agitate the coffee too much but you should a little. All in all it's just a different method that is interesting to say the least

@thomasrichardson5425
@thomasrichardson5425 6 жыл бұрын
Blooming does nothing in a french press, the only reason you bloom with in a v60 is to prepare the coffee to release it flavours and cause them to swell so the water travels slower through the coffee and doesn't just pass through the coffee and filter without picking up flavour. Because you're steeping the coffee with a french press you're gonna get all the flavour that's available. When you think about why you normally bloom, you see that it makes no sense to bloom with a french press
@PTPerdix
@PTPerdix 6 жыл бұрын
"Blooming" (for me) for French press coffee is more about getting it to immerse than anything else. It's simply to avoid having to use a spoon to press it down like Joe does in the video (spoon isn't hard, granted, but if I'm at work I might not have a spoon handy). A small amount of water with a quick swirl and giving it a half minute to soak in before pouring the rest of the water can avoid the necessity of the spoon step. Though it does add more agitation.
