@@bezzergeezer Your argument isn't a defense of him -- that he wasn't aware of the extent of the danger does not absolve him for giving reckless orders in which some danger was plausible. In addition, that the night was moonless, the water was still, and visibility was limited, there should have been given the order to slow in recognition that ice had been spotted. As captain, he has the responsibility to be proactive, ensuring communication is thorough and that he follows up with direction in recognition of particular circumstances. It would also be argued that as Titanic was a new ship with which he had limited experience, he should not have been testing the limits of what the crew or the ship was capable of. You can't be taking responsibility for the safety of thousands without taking on the responsibility to ensure that all of these considerations are met.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that Smith and Andrews jumped off the bridge together as it flooded. Of course, we will never know for sure just how these two men met their fates, but assuming that is indeed the last anyone ever saw of Smith, then that means In Nacht und Eis may actually be the most accurate portrayal of his death. Actually, scratch that. The Legend of the Titanic was definitely what happened. Survivors did testify that the kraken held the sinking Titanic together in time to take Smith off and place him safely on an orca. Whatever they were on when they made that movie, I want some.
@CaptainJZH
@CaptainJZH Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've actually quite liked the "Smith in the water" story of his end a bit more than the "Smith standing on the bridge as it floods" version we see most often. There's also an apocryphal story of him going to Collapsible B and being turned away (without anyone realizing who he was until afterwards) which, while probably untrue, I always liked the idea of.
@Daniel_Huffman
@Daniel_Huffman Жыл бұрын
I also am of the belief that Smith at least made his way to the vicinity of Collapsible B, though it is unclear whether or not he spoke with any of its occupants. Also, why did _La Leggenda del Titanic_ depict Smith without his beard?
@NorthWestern1919
@NorthWestern1919 Жыл бұрын
@@Daniel_Huffman Considering all the ways _The Legend of the Titanic_ makes a mockery of this tragedy, I'd say Smith not having a beard is a relatively minor inaccuracy. Anyways, glad to see you've been active in the comments of these videos as well. I personally find it interesting how iconic many of these tropes are in Titanic media, and just how often they pop up. Naturally, when multiple productions are retelling a single historical event, there's bound to be recurring tropes in each version.
@Daniel_Huffman
@Daniel_Huffman Жыл бұрын
@@NorthWestern1919 My headcanon as to why these films are so bizarre goes as follows: The writers found the concept of the film to be a bad idea, both because they were making a cashgrab on Cameron's film and because they were making an animated version of a historical tragedy. They tried to come up with the most insane ideas so that the executives would take the hint, only for their efforts to be mistaken for creative thinking until the final product became something so incomprehensible that it would be a bad film even if it wasn't about the _Titanic_ Disaster. (Seriously, they didn't even try to synchronize the mouths with the voices)
@cobbler9113
@cobbler9113 Жыл бұрын
Yes, that probably seems to be the most realistic one. The ones of him going to the bridge to go down with the ship seem to be based on fantastical legends that get drawn up after any great tragedy or event. In reality, his end was probably far less dramatic as depicted here.

I absolutely LOVE the words spoken by George C. Scott’s 'Captain Smith' portrayal, in the 1996, made for television miniseries; drawing parallels between Greek mythology and RMS Titanic’s plight. Sure, the budget and production quality may have not have been of as high a caliber as others, but that particular bit of Titanic dialogue is my favorite. It adds a certain level of sophisticated thought, found to be generally lacking, even amongst some of the films of record breaking box office revenues, with the highest billed casts. Thank-you for including this scene.

That little shot from the 1953 Titanic movie was so well shot in a subtle but haunting way. We are shown a very sad scene of all the passengers and crew seemingly resigned to their fates. But as we the audience get so far into the scene all of a sudden we see them start to slowly move downwards, as if despite the scene we are given the horrifying reminder that we are still on a sinking ship.

Great scene, but it was definitely the least accurate version of the events, other than the damned octopus version (lol). Not everyone was simply standing around singing until the ship "exploded" and sank. Still, I think A Night to Remember and James Cameron's Titanic--apparently the two most accurate versions of the sinking--portray too much panic. Apparently, it was somewhere in-between. Some people were standing around, resigned to their fates, singing even. Others were holding onto dear life, clinging to the ship, screaming, etc.

The first one "could" be true. Supposedly people say they saw Andrews and Smith jumping from the bridge. There seems to be a story going around of a man who looked like Smith had tried to swim up to the overturned boat, only to turn away when told there was no room left. Of course it was so dark that night, almost pitch black unlike what the movies would have you believe, that who knows who really jumped off the bridge. Could just be some lost and scared passengers who took a wrong turn. Same with the lifeboat story, there is no confirmation that I've heard to suggest for 100% if the swimmer was Smith or not. But the movies depict Smith as I dunno if I'd heroic, but an honourable man. Resigning his fate and entering the wheelhouse as Titanic sank, to go down with his ship knowing all aboard can't be saved. It is an interesting thought however to think that may not be the reality.

kinda sad no movie depicts Smith and Andrews cooperating to the end on the evacuation as some witnesses claimed observing that as the last time either were seen. There is also a supposed claim that Smith was in the water, trying to climb the turned lifeboat, but accepting that it couldn't hold him. I don't think there is any less honor in Smith's memory by not depicting him as someone who didn't fight to the end

Eerie seeing the bridge underwater and creaking. New light on the 'Edmund Fitzgerald' speculates a similar thing happened except more extreme-she did a near 90 degree plunge hitting the bottom and breaking in half. Imagine being on the bridge and seeing that nightmare unfold.

The censorship before the MPAA created the modern film rating system was terrible when it came to historical depictions of tragedy or peril. Hell, don’t get me started on the slew of WWII films during the American Post-War Years: in reality, soldiers as young as 18 were shooting themselves on Normandy Beach after being scared shitless by the artillery that was being fired upon them by the Germans for 10 hours straight. Yeah, try getting away with that back then lol

The captain urged caution that night and wanted to cross at a slower pace: it was J. Bruce Ismay that urged him to quicken the pace as fast as possible in order to break a record and make headlines. Cpt. Edward Smith even chose a more southernly route in order to avoid the icebergs he was well-aware of in that corridor, but Ismay wanted him to plow in through despite Smith’s reservations…

Probably the main reason why in the 1999 version was pretty innaccurate because Probably they feared that the audience, probably kids, would wanted to see all of the passengers and crews made it off the ship, including the captain who was famously known as the one who gone down with the ship, obviously to lead to a Happy Ending Fun fact, There is most certainly deaths in the series, Mainly Rats, who were essentially the 2nd Protagonists in the movie, but more randomly, They were brought back to life for the ending, including that One heroic rat who sacrificed himself to fix the Marconi Machine.
