Seeing as almost no one is using it with the exception of activists, feminists and LGBT types of people, I don't see it catching on.

Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexican/Mexican heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white". Not all people of Mexican/Latin American/Puerto Rican/Cuban/etc. heritage have Spanish last names. (exp. former Mexican President Jorge Fox). Even though both of my parents are Mexican American my dad's last name is German(and so is mine). So lot's of people went for Latino which also seemed more inclusive of people from central/south/Caribbean America. Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke.

@@juangomez1704 First of all it's Latin America in English and not Latina America. You're making the same mistake that Mexican Chicano Frank del Olmo did when he chose "Latino" instead of "Latin American" to identify the people from Latin America. Latino is incorrect in English-correct way is Latin singular and Latins plural. Ok, now to answer your question. Yes you are Latins but linguistically and culturally not so much but you are considered Latins in Latin America because of the following criteria: One: You speak Latin derived languages. TWO: You come from Countries whose laws are based on Roman Laws and whose religion is Roman Catholicism. HOWEVER: You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina incorrectly. You use it for personal identification and for everything else that you do when for personal identification you must use the name of the country of your origin to identify yourselves like for instance if you are from Mexico you must say "I'm Mexican", if from Cuba you must say "I'm Cuban", just to give you an idea or if you want to be known as member of a larger group then you must say "I'm Latin American" in English. You use the terms Latin/Latino/Latina to identify you Ethnicity or Skin Color or DNA and you use it for everything and this is not right. You can use the terms: Latin/Latino/Latin ONLY if somebody asks you about your cultural background then you can say ""I' Latin ,or my culture is Latin. You have restaurants offering "Latin Food" when there is no such a thing. Actually there is not even a "Latin American Food" because the Mexicans eat different food from the Puerto Ricans etc., etc. and you have places offering "Latin Dance Instruction" when there is no Latin Dance. You use Latin incorrectly. This is called Cultural Appropriation and distortion of history and it's not acceptable. Remember: Latin is not a Skin Color like many of you believe. Latin is about Romance Languages and Roman Latin Culture and the Latins come from Italy. I want to add something else. It goes back to the Latin European colonizers: French, Portuguese and Spaniards. The French called that part of the Americas "LATIN" America (Amerique Latine) for a reason. Because they wanted to make a distinction between the Northern America that is now the USA which was English-speaking and Protestant with their America which was Latin speaking and Catholic and this is why they called it "Latin America" to differentiate between the two Americas.

because "hispanic" is so blah and ordinary. it didn't have the verve, the kick, the kewl of the added "x". some people just love trendy words. a decade ago, they described communities as "vibrant".

100% right. Hispanic is a term that the US census started decades ago and only means "Spanish last name" but was basically used as a substitute for identifying Mexicans/Meixcan heritage because they would be otherwise identified by race as "white" on the census (and you can't have Mexicans passing for the same as real (aka white anglo) Americans... Not all people of Mexican/Latin American/Puerto Rican/Cuban/etc. heritage have Spanish last names. (exp. former Mexican President Jorge Fox). Even though both of my parents are Mexican American my dad's last name is German(and so is mine). So lot's of people went for Latino which also seemed more inclusive of people from central/south/Caribbean America. Pew Foundation survey shows that 94% of people from these communities who live in America prefer the terms Hispanic or Latino. LatinX was brought up by some University Academics in the '70s but remained obscure and unused until lately by a bunch of Anglos (or should I say AnglX) who think they need to teach our community how to be more woke by imposing another new label on us.

Spanish was literally invented by white people. It's a European language, just like French and German. It didn't come from Latin America. So not really sure how it's "white washing your language".

@Ivana Valenzuela it’s not dead, actually. It’s popular in Italy as a hobby. There the language is referred to as Latino volgare or latino classico, depending on the form.
