I love you all and appreciate you all. Thanks for being here and watching my videos. Want to have a heart to heart today about underrepresented folks in STEM (engineering...science, construction, you all know who you are), and all the intersecting identities that impact how the working world sees and treats you. I can't know your exact struggle but I see you and appreciate your beautiful faces, whether its online or in the field if we ever run into each other :)

I've experienced my fair share of this too, but I want to share one incident that really set me off like no other. lol. A few years ago, I was working in the zoo ops department at an aquarium. It was first thing in the morning and everyone had just gotten there and we were gathering in the office for our morning meeting. I was the only woman on staff that day. They were talking about new lights being installed over a coral tank that were supposed to encourage more rapid growth of the corals. I was still half asleep and busy trying to get my coffee down. A few minutes into the conversation about the new lights, one of the older guys was like "And Amber is just being a typical woman. Doesn't really care about the science, just cares if it looks pretty." What sucked the most was that I couldn't really do anything, other than fake smile and then seethe for the rest of the day. I'm honestly really disappointed in myself for not saying something back to him right then and there, but I was also a 20 year old who was scared of loosing the job she liked.

Wowwwww that is so inappropriate. I understand the feeling of being young and scared to respond and feeling powerless. That reminds me of a time i had to fly with a massive suitcase full of equipment up to a remote field site - I’m talking one of the biggest suitcases they’ll take. Arriving at baggage and getting to camp older men asked me if I really needed such a big suitcase for my clothes and shoes in Fort mcmurray, is it all shoes in there? Etc. It’s monitoring equipment and construction PPE 😫 the comments just add up over time...

Thank you so much for this. I'm in my early 20's and a mixed race Mexican/Filipino American. I am currently entering a PhD program for environmental toxicology and I have faced some of the worst sexism. I am just as qualified as my peers and colleges but I'm constantly treated like I am an idiot. I find a lot of strength is connecting with other who are racial and gender minorities and reading the comments on this video made me feel so much better about my experiences. STEM is for everyone!

As a Hispanic women who is also non-binary in my undergrad junior year of studying Ecology, hoping to get my foot in the wildlife field within the next few years, I just want to say THANK YOU. You literally put every thought I've had about going into this field into words and reassured me that even though it's a struggle, I can do it! I've actually had an incident in the workforce where you said when you report sexual harassment or discrimination at work your superior or whoever will dismiss it as something that you misremembered or didn't actually happen. It's just so unfair, so I totally understand where you're coming from! You continue to be such an inspiration for both me and many other people! Thank you so much

I’m so glad I found your account!! You’ve inspired me to switch my degree to what I really love, being in nature and helping animals. Also, I love this message, diversity in the workplace is so important. It’s a deciding factor for me in choosing a workplace and will be a deciding factor for me someday if I’m ever in a position to hire. 💖

As a Non-binary person I often wonder how it's gonna go for me after I finish school and start my career. I pass as male and have worked in factories (all dudes all the time) where they've acted like that. I wear nail polish sometimes and at my last job someone saw it and the whole factory talked about me behind my back about it and even made up rumors about me that weren't true. I'm not technically even out of the closet yet and I'm already dealing with this BS.😣😣😣 Hoping it's better in the biology field

I have witnessed this too many times in my seasonal work leading biologists surveying in northern Oregon forests. My boss is female and the majority of crew members I have led in the field are female and they all come out of the season with at least one experience of discrimination or harrassment. Some are potentially dangerous. Thanks for taking time to highlight this dynamic of field work. I hope that some day this will not be as prominent as it is. It is uncomfortable even from the outside looking in.

Thank you for posting about this! I’m a white bisexual female starting my degree soon and my husband also works in the STEM field (aerospace engineering). He’s a white male and has come back with plenty of stories from work where he’s noticed discrimination. He fights against it and has said if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s so good at his job he wouldn’t have as much respect with the others just because of that. Which is bullshit.

As a woman, I believe we will never get the respect we deserve. They try to say this and that about women being equal, but that's just the political correct, and unfortunately, not the truth. This also applies to biracial people as well. Makes me so mad!!!

It would be very irresponsible not to have protection when you are putting yourself in a place where any bad thing can happen beyond imagination. Please be safe everone!!!!

:> I'm curious, though. What's it like as an environmentalist _on petroleum job sites?!_ @,@ I mean, what do wildlife biologists do there? Why do they let you in? XD Government regulation forcing them to? So is it like everyone hates you regardless of race/gender/etc., and then this is on top of that?? @,@
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 3 жыл бұрын
Yup basically oil /gas projects need to adhere to the law and permit conditions regulating their impacts to wildlife and the environment so you need folks there to ensure compliance, or to do research and quantify the impacts in the first place. There's a pretty broad variety of jobs in industry. We're definitely not the most popular folks on site that's for sure. We usually just cost the company time and money :P

@@kristina_lynn Also "We usually just cost the company time and money :P" Yep that's how it is with companies, since their purpose is to make money / get power. But if it was for an entity whose purpose was to help life (people and nature), then you wouldn't be costing them anything, you'd be helping them achieve their own goal, and so they'd value your services like a company would value a business person who'll tell them what to do differently to make more money ;3 (But far be it from capitalism to let such an entity become successful enough to build buildings or such X3 )
