Totally feel you on moving your whole life, girlfriend and I both went back to school in covid times unintentionally and adjusting to a new lifestyle on top of moving like once a year, it's a mess. Still never even attempted to find a house so I can't begin to imagine. Crossing my fingers for you! : D I've been playing a lot of video games and investing in my language hobbies, but I think the biggest change has been making it a point just to call my grandparents or my friends at least once a week for the past couple months. Keeps my sane since I never really kept up with them as well before. Hope you find something soon : )

Anyway, I would like to buy a house myself and am equally dismayed at the rocketing prices and low supply. I take it you are in California or the NE, an especially expensive area. Good luck and hope you can not get so upset about the way things are today.

Kristina, I think you should just post whatever you feel called to or inspired to post and not fret at all about trying to please or help anyone. It's great to get ideas, but you don't want to run yourself into the ground either. If people find value, that is great, but your health is not something that should suffer in this giving process. Personally, I like videos that are just informational on animals/ plants/ ecosystems/ nature to learn more about the things I love and care about. It's not as much on career and not exactly your style of video, but it's one idea if you wanted to go in a different direction. 🦀🐳🦒🦊🐆🦏🐪🐐🦉🐗🐙🦨🦩🕷🦋🦧🐟 There's so much fascinating beauty out there in the world, so let's honor and celebrate that and not forget the reasons why people get into the field to begin with.

Take all the time you need! I hope you can move into an amazing house of your own soon! If you haven’t already, I’d love your opinion on choosing a school for environmental science. I’ve applied to UCs (I’m a Californian) as well as state schools and the thought of debt is getting very real. Half of people say go to the cheapest school while the other half say to go to a UC!
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 3 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely try to reduce the debt as much as possible while still compromising and finding a school with a good program. I wouldn't pick a school where they don't have the major you want nor any interesting research groups (for example) just because its cheap, but school prestige alone really isn't that important in this field. But sometimes the more expensive schools can offer good financial aid so definitely see what sort of offers and financial aid packages you get. I personally would not want to ever go more than 50,000 in debt for this degree - its just not high enough earning for most be able to comfortably afford more to be honest

Oh gosh, I've dealt with bidding wars in the past and it's a nightmare. It sounds like the market is awful right now. Sorry you're dealing with that. :( As for the channel! I think everyone here should be able to understand pauses in content. Burnout is real and valid. As for me and what I like most from the content you put out, I find the field content the most enjoyable. Being in the mud and snow and heat and cold with mosquitos and sometimes grumpy animals is probably not the most fun time to film, but it's SUPER encouraging to see! At least, for me. Which probably means I'm the right brand of crazy to be working in this field once I get out of school LOL.

I cant imagine what its like to over bid like your having to. My 2 cents: Just remember to manage your Sleep Hygiene, Self Care and Personal Boundaries through it all. Otherwise you'll go Cray-Cray!!! Regarding what I'd like to see (ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE TIME)...just spit balling but...maybe a short vid about this very topic: Rapid Population Growth\Capitalism\Real estate fluctuations and how it all affects the environment? That’s a tough situation out there with the housing costs. I have two nephews in Squamish and a niece in Vancouver so am familiar with the out of control pricing. I often wonder how the youth of today can ever get a house when wages haven’t been keeping up to match in the least. Things are getting high here in Ontario (certainly bad in big cities) too but not as crazy as out there. Good luck with the battle.

I would be super super careful buying into the current housing market. I honestly think it's in a major bubble right now. I actually think there's a big reason we are going to see a collapse in the housing bubble. Work from home is getting very common, and COVID has been a massive beta test for how successful it can be. When companies see how much money they can save having people work from home (no insurance, no rent, no cleaning staff, no office products, etc) I think it's going to be a big wave that COVID created (a nice silver lining, cutting down on so much carbon from transportation). So.... When that happens and people can sell their 1.5 million dollar townhome for 100 acres in the country and pocket a million dollars, how many people are going to make that choice? I think SO many. I see a major blending of city prices vs rural prices coming in the future. I would be very very VERY hesitant about buying anything anywhere near a city right now. If you were going to buy somewhere like Prince Rupert or something like that, sure, but to buy in Vancouver Island, or the surrounding area is really dangerous. Just personal opinion of course. I actually did a few videos on this, a household budget video called "Household budget, finance and investment advice. Debt reduction and freedom.", and another one talking about the bigger picture stuff like the above, in one called "A sustainable future - why the world will take us kicking and screaming towards permaculture." I think they are worth watching (I may be biased, but they are very applicable to your situation right now). The one thing that could offset all the above is honestly climate change. If we start seeing refugee crisis worldwide and climate displaced peoples, Canada becomes a very attractive place to buy. Right now we're seeing a big wave of international money causing the current spikes all across Canada, and it just depends on the rate of change of that money coming in, compared to the rate of change of people fleeing the city to work from home in the suburbs and even more so in rural areas (even extremely rural areas). Good luck in whatever you choose to do! I just found you yesterday and have really enjoyed your videos. I really like the gardening ones (obviously, since that's my jam), and I really like the tiny house, minimalism, eco friendly stuff since that's my passion. If I was single still I would probably live in a cabin in the woods somewhere cheap where I could retire now and just live inside the forest.

I would love your opinion on a late life (yep, 48) career changer moving into environmental sciences from a business background. Let's just say I've heard a lot of "no, it's too late," and "you won't even get into grad school, let alone get hired." And let's also just say that I usually don't take no for an answer. Being a realist, I don't want to publish or run a lab at this point - my goal is to find a research/tech support position with some fieldwork. Thanks for all of your great content!
@kristina_lynn
@kristina_lynn 3 жыл бұрын
I don't see why you couldn't do that at all! I have worked with mid-level scientists your age and older in the field all the time. There is a bit of a reputation for the lifestyle of a field biologist being a little up in the air for some, travelling often, moving often...this turns off some older folks who are more established in their locations, family etc. So just keep that in mind.

For literally no reason at all. I guess you people out west here have this terminate without clause thing that's toxic af. All these environmental companies I get picked up by are toxic af and are just exploiting me and using me for projects and then dropping me. You seem to be successful at this so my question is, what is the secret to establishing a good job at a good company and actually staying there for longer periods of time? Is it just because I am a white guy in a liberal field of work that my luck is not so good?
