TOBY THE PUP in "Circus Time"

This is a sample from our Blu-Ray collection the rare TOBY THE PUP cartoons produced for Charles Mintz by Animation Legends Dick Huemer and Sid Marcus. Thought to have been lost, a number of them surfaced in France and were made available through Serge Bromberg of Lobster Films. This one comes from the archives of UCLA. While most of the surviving prints in circulation are from the French versions, every effort was made to return the original head and end titles to established them as they were originally seen over 90 years ago.

It's so good to see all these vintage animations. All those years ago these people really knew what they were doing, you could say they were well ahead of their time. It never fails to amaze me just how much we could all learn from all this fine artwork, the process and all the editing involved. Good to see you are uploading onto youtube still, you may remember me from a few years ago regarding the Bewitched titles and my bad linework, especially those hands which I very much took on board. I used to do a lot of still art right up to 35 years ago and then sadly someone decided they wanted to throw all that away. It's like everything isn't it Ray, not only do we try to strive towards our own perfections and challenges but so many other things in life are waiting to slow us down and sometimes even stop us all together. I've recently re-started doing some timelapse art again, some copies of Disney and other things, it's gradually coming back to me but not as good as I used to be. I hope you are keeping well and your happy with life at the studios, sorry to hear that you have lost some people around you, always very sad and always makes an alteration to the way you see things in life. PS. I agree with the gullivers scene. What a great piece of animated work, I can see all the hours and months spent on those scenes alone.

I just got to say that I love Toby !! He is a character that just has so much charm !! Sad that he only had 12 shorts. Wish they did more with Toby. Also its very lucky that half of the shorts still survive !! But sad that the other half is lost. Its still nice that you put some of these wonderful shorts on blu-ray !!

The original Toby title card reminds me of Winkler Oswald title cards.

Some of the cartoons studios used title service companies like Pacific Title, which Leon Schlesinger owned. So it wouldn't be surprising if stock backgrounds were used. Some title backgrounds used in Disney SILLY SYMPHONES turned up in some Columbia Color Rhapsodies.

Art Davis got his start at The Inkwell Studio as the Assistant to Dick Huemer. He was considered the first Inbetweener.

They Stole Betty Boop's Boop Boop De Doop

This was produced before the phrase was associated with Betty.

@@thishandleistaken425 Not quite. "Boop Oop A Doop" was a catch phrase that was in common use long before it was associated with Helen Kane and the Betty Boop character. It was used for the ending of the Oswald the Rabbit cartoons from this period as well. Unless a catch phrase is registered as a type of "trademark," no one has exclusivity to it. In the case of "Yabba Dabba Do," this is a trademark, exclusive to Fred Flintstone and the Hanna-Barbera properties thanks to the imagination of Allan Reed who originated it.

We are in our 24th year and about to move. We lost 10 years of progress because I had to shut everything down and move from Los Angeles to Michigan to care for my parents. In addition, three of my people died, the greatest loss being my Tech man, Bruce Cordozo who died of complications from a terrible automobile accident. We had gotten into doing digital restorations, and I had spent two years restoring the Fleischer science film, EVOLUTION when Bruce died. With him went two years of work I'll never get back. TOBY THE PUP was an effort to get back into new releases after a 10 year absence in spite of individuals attempting to stop our progress. Thank you for asking.

@Ray Pointer I wish you the best of luck in your restorations. I just gained an interest with what you said about the Fleisher Film “Evolution”. I watched it and it was really interesting and intriguing. Thanks for all of your hard work in restoring these classics. I have been throughly enjoying the Toby the Pup cartoons!
