I thought about covering some early sweetcorn ground for many years but just never pulled the trigger. I know a grower in northern Indiana that grows his first 10 acres with transplanted sweetcorn, I don’t think I’m ever interested in transplanting sweetcorn but I would be able to get it a week or two earlier if I just put row covers over it, but it’s a lot of extra expense and labor that I’m not sure I want to mess with. As long as we get our corn around Fourth of July or the week after, I’m usually pretty happy.

Thanks Bill, but you can’t get 5 gallon boxes any longer around here and I was told that they are no longer being made, some places may just still have old inventory. Anyways, I like my 93% strength acid that comes in 15 gallon jugs, so much less product to mess with compared to the much weaker version from auto parts stores. I can pick mine up about 1.5 hours down the road so don’t have to pay shipping…they were $186 per 15 gallons.

Two reasons, first it’s an extra step that’s not necessary and second of all when you drop more than one seed in it makes it very difficult to pick it up because it’s down inside the impression… when the seed is sitting up on top, you can just easily pick it up and move it or slide it over. I’ve done it this way for 25 years and it works great for us. I am all about efficiency and minimizing the steps involved at everything I do and my younger brother is 10 times worse than me and I guess he’s rubbed off on me a little bit ha ha ha.

For many years we applied poultry litter compost and gypsum for our high pH soils but the application process was compacting our soils too much so for the past 5 years we’ve went back to using conventional fertilizer. Any issues we may be dealing with or wanting to change and improve are going to be for the next generation, at this point in my career I’m ready to slow down and just keep doing what works for me. A good deep rip would certainly help the hard pan.

I do show it briefly in one of the upcoming videos here soon, some of the leaves were shredded a little bit, but I don’t think it’s going to affect the overall corn, fortunately our hail was small enough, and the duration was pretty short, I can imagine how devastating a bad hailstorm can be on a sweetcorn crop and other vegetables for that matter.

Mike, we planted a few different Mirai varieties many years ago but the cold soil emergence was terrible on those and genetics have come along way since then so I'm guessing that is part of the reason that Mirai is going by the wayside. And in my opinion, there are many augmented super sweets out there that eat just as well if not better than any of the Mirai vareties that I guarantee your customers will not know the difference or even like them better. Nirvana is the most tender and sweet variety I think I've ever grown, and a very easy snapper, but sometimes will give you a slightly smaller ear than others...it likes a little more space to grow, like 18-19,000 seeds per acre and weeds will really impact the size of ear. Xtra Tender 274 is a huge ear and comes on right after Bolt and Kickoff. By the way, Kickoff is a few days after Bolt and is the best early corn out there, other than Bolt. Xanadu is another new favorite one from last year that we are planting a lot more of this year. We've also planted Caliber and Anthem for the last 6 years or so and they yeild great but can yank off the stalk a little hard sometimes and they are just slightly cruncher kernels. This year we also tried Signature, Epiphany and Stamina for the first time and looking forward to trying them out because lookin for a replacement for Caliber and Anthem. Troubadour is really good too but the stalk is about at foot taller and I don't like that. For late corn we use Matriarch and it is amazing! Very small and sweet kernels and I would plant it all season if my customers wouldn't make such a fuss over gmo corn. It is the attribute corn with insect and herbicide tollerance, so very expensive. It is an herbicide used to kill weeds.

It is a very potent herbicide that is 10 times stronger than roundup. In the hands of an irresponsible user it can drift long distances. Agent Orange used in Vietnam was 50% 2-4-d.

Most row crop growers growing soybeans use 2-4,d to control broad leaves and since our Farm is surrounded by many soybean fields, there’s always a risk of some of it drifting towards our farm if the wind is blowing just right

Yeah, that stuff can carry quite a ways on a breezy day, and I hate that we have to use it in our soybean fields surrounding my vegetable fields and greenhouses, not good
