Frodo was worried about Pippin talking about "Baggins" in Bree, because he saw the obviously mischievous Peter Jackson cameo-character eating a carrot upon entering Bree, and knew it was suspicious because: Who the heck eats carrots at nighttime in the middle of the street? It was just too weird for Frodo, and he was paranoid for the rest of the time in Bree.

A very nitpicky thing: When Frodo and Sam meet Merry and Pippin with their stolen crops (besides the whole "stealing crops" thing...), it's Sam who points out that they are stealing from farmer Maggot. Sam, who just stated one minute earlier that he is now further away from home than any time before. How does he know who Maggot is, and where his fields are?

This could be explained: Perhaps as they entered farmer Maggot's field, Frodo told Sam it was Maggot's land, maybe even with the story about how Frodo used to steal mushrooms and had the dogs sicced on him. But you're right, the scolding tone in Sam's voice - "you've been into Farmer Maggot's crop!" Seems like Sam personally knows farmer Maggot's reputation.

I thought about the Sauron thing but I was mainly going for narrative inconsistency, since that’s actually something where an explanation is (in theory) impossible, but Sauron’s reaching for Isildur can easily be explained by hubris. As for Pippin, it has to be said that the Tooks are a family apart from most other hobbits, though it probably made more sense to apply that logic to Merry because the Brandybucks don’t even live in the Shire.

One other thing that annoyes me is when Frodo finds Gandalf in Bilbo's house. He is exhausted seemingly from looking for Bilbo. Gandalf knew of Gollum from Bilbo's adventures, and went hunting for Gollum with Aragorn and once Aragon captured Gollum, they left him with Thranduil in Mirkword and the Wood Elves. This is why Legolas is in Rivendell. In the Fellowship movie, they don't explain this, but if you take the Peter Jackson The Hobbit movies into account, they try to kind of cover this plot hole in the Fellowship movie by doing the (kinda crazy?) expelling of the Necromancer.

Enjoyed this and I get that you are being tongue in cheek - as a fan of the books and the films, I think almost all of the things changed by Peter Jackson that Tolkien enthusiasts get annoyed about can be explained by the fact that cinema is a fundamentally different medium to literature. That includes cutting a lot of wider world background, it includes giving Theoden, Faramir and Aragorn less subtle character arcs, and it even includes stuff like the Ringwraiths brutally slaughtering bystanders and doing their sinister slow walk on the Hobbits. Yes, it makes little sense in a real life combat situation, but it's such a strong visual and thematic signal to the audience that it really does work, in cinematic terms.

Just after Weathertop, the Glorfindel-Arwen swap is the most confusing change for me. Simply because they never do anything with it. Arwen goes from being a heroic, competent, ranger sort, to what feels like a princess locked in a tower type of character for the rest of the movies. She feels like two different characters. Why make this change? Would she ride to grey haves in a dress, with a compliment of guards? Wouldn't she prefer to go alone, wear a cloak, sneak up on rangers, stand up to nazgul? Isn't that what she does? Not sitting around her dad's place being sad. Seems like they could have just had Glorfindel do this one thing and Arwen would've been exactly the same in the movies.
@QuasarKaraoke
@QuasarKaraoke 5 ай бұрын
In the original shoot of The Two Towers, Arwen was also supposed to be at Helm's Deep! This blew my mind when I first saw it, but in some shots in the final cut you can still see her running around from far away, *and* during Theoden's charge down the causeway, Legolas has a doppelganger. They digitally replaced Arwen with a second Legolas for those shots. Haldir and the Lorien elves coming to fight at Helm's Deep was a reshoot addition, after PJ and the team decided that Arwen's scenes weren't working out. I think at the very beginning, the plan was even for Arwen to be with Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead and all the way to the Black Gate, but they changed all of that after taking her out of Helm's Deep. Ironically, despite all of the complaints about replacing Glorfindel, this actually makes her at least a bit closer to her book counterpart, even if it makes her big scene in Fellowship more incongruous. The problem was, they couldn't exactly go back and change it at that point!

When I first saw the movie, I was distressed because the hobbits' feet weren't furry enough, and then I wondered whether I was losing my mind to care about this. It turned out that at least it was an issue in making the movie-- they'd tried hairier feet, but it was harder to keep them groomed, and grooming the feet took up valuable production time, so they went with less hairy feet.

In that instance, Fatty Bolger had sounded the alarm and presumably the poor guards were offering resistance when the Nazgul were in a hurry to follow after the Ringbearer

I always assumed someone like Bill Ferny might've mentioned Baggins, being in league with the Nazgul and Pippin took the bait. As for Weathertop, I do agree the film beforehand makes the Nazgul out to be more action-oriented than need be, but that scene never bothered me. I think it's running at a heightened sense of realism, I can't tell if the film itself is in slow motion during the overhead shots but it always felt like the events onscreen are not running 1:1 with reality. Again I agree the Nazgul reaching out for the ring would make more sense if they hadn't been shown to be merciless killers earlier, but I think the nonlethal stab wound is Tolkien's evil defeating itself. The surprise and then wrath it felt as Frodo recoiled made it lash out in a counterproductive way.

The Weathertop, maybe they only knocked out the other hobbits because they didn't know exactly which one has the ring and they were supposed to bring him alive, when Frodo put the ring on, the witch-king tried to "convince" Frodo to give up the ring and when Frodo resisted he stabbed him to the shoulder in anger, but didn't want to kill him, maybe the Witch-King would be able to control the effect of Morgul blade on Frodo if he had captured him, so he wouldn't have died/turned before they returned to Mordor or just bringing back wriath Frodo would be enough for Sauron

Let's face it, the book Nazgul are inconsistent. I mean to do with how much physical strength they have. There's been controversy for years about whether it was them or Bill Ferny and the Southerner who raided the hobbit bedroom. Jackson clearly implies the Nazgul, but Tolkien left the question open (on my reading). It seems ridiculous that Nob, the hobbit servant, could frighten them off with a shout, but he does (when he follows Merry on his midnight stroll). But at Crickhollow they definitely break down the door. Then there are the horses. Horses need a lot of looking after, who does that? This ties in with the hint (from Radagast) that the Nazgul are only disguised as riders. Maybe they work best as spirit-beings, like the Wargs under Caradhras, but then you are into the metaphysics of how they can start off as Men. Same with the Barrow-Wight.

Well for starters, in the clip you provided at 16:45, Aragorn can be clearly seen watching "Mr. Underhill" make a panicked rush towards a hobbit who just gestured towards him and loudly referred to him as "Frodo Baggins". And that's even before he clearly sees "Mr. Underhill" fall to the ground and launch a gold ring into the air, catch it on his finger and vanish, only to shortly reappear right next to him.

@@TolkienLorePodcast There's a term used by writers, particularly screenwriters, called "shoe leather". It's used to describe mundane procedural events that advance a narrative but are not depicted because they lack entertainment value and/or would negatively affect the dramatic tension or pacing of the narrative. Several of the nitpicks described here fall under this category, and most are really only relevant upon repeat viewings, or if the viewer was already familiar with the source material to begin with. In this specific scene, it can be inferred from context clues revealed later in the film that Aragorn previously received descriptions of the hobbits and any other relevant information from Gandalf that would help him identify them. While this would have been easy enough to show, it would have drastically altered the tone and dramatic tension of the scene. The viewer is supposed to be wary and confused about about who Aragorn is and what his intentions are, because at this point in the narrative we are still following the fearful and vulnerable perspective of the hobbits, specifically Frodo. Even without the shoe leather, Aragorn is presented as a quite intelligent and vigilant person right from the start. It would be pretty farcical of him to conclude that hobbits showing up The Prancing Pony with magic invisibility rings is a common enough occurrence to not warrant further investigation.
