A legendary performance of Firth Of Fifth from Genesis in their prime!
Genesis In Concert 1974 Selling England tour 2DVD collector's item set. Firth Of Fifth was recorded live at Montreal Quebec, Canada April 20th, 1974 Some missing sequences were edited in from other venues to create the song in it's entirety.
Similar to what we did with the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and with 2014 being the 40th anniversary of Selling England By The Pound we've patched all the missing parts of the remastered version of the Montreal 1974 footage with scenes from short amateur & pro-shot video clips of shows filmed in other parts of the world to make the very first entire Selling England by the Pound concert with all songs in full. Again I think you'll enjoy the results.

1. CHOM-FM Radio Intro/Watcher Of The Skies
2. Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
3. The Cinema Show
4. I Know What I Like

Arguably the definitive Genesis song

For those wondering why Genesis stopped playing the piano intro live: Taking a grand piano on tour only for that fragment was too costly. Banks used an RMI Electra-Piano 368 electric piano but this instrument had 2 important limitations. First of all its keyboard was not sensitive to velocity or pressure, when you pressed a key it was like an On/Off switch, so he could not apply any dynamics to the playing. Secondly it had only 68 keys which is 20 keys less than a standard 88-keys grand piano, so the intro could not be played entirely as it had been recorded in studio, some of the notes had to be transposed. They tried it however in the first gigs of the 1974 tour but Tony was not happy with the sound. On top of it once he forgot about the transposing and ran out of keys while playing, to the surprise of the rest of the members of the band. Phil Collins saved the situation giving the intro to the multi-intrumental section of the song. After this they decided to drop the intro. By the time newer instruments solved the limitations of the RMI (such as the Yamaha CP-70 which Tony used from then on), Genesis was already changing style and repertoire. Actually this is one of the many curiosities you will find in my book "The Musical Instruments of Progressive Rock" www.amazon.com/Musical-Instruments.../dp/8413385997

Honestly, I like it better this way, even if this early electric piano was so limited and sounds so weak compared to a real one (or a modern electric piano). Just jumping straight into the song isn't as satisfying as it is with the intro.

genesis without him is not the same sound and i mean the Daryl Stuermer guitar on the hackett solos sounds a little bit weak not bad ! Years ago he plays a godin style les paul with sustainers and tremolo ( not floyd rose a standard tremolo like the stratocaster style) and he never uses on this hackett solos maybe that reason makes the sustainer sounds not too high !

Yes. A bit like Richard Wright of Pink Floyd. For Genesis, everybody talk about Gabriel for the vocals and Collins for the drumming, and not witrhout reason, by all means. However... those keyboards of Tony's... They were SO integral to their sound, weren't they... Same goes for The Floyd. Everybody talks about Roger's lyrics and David's vocals and guitar playing, and again, not without reason. But... Richard's keyboards... See what I mean?

This song had such an impact on me that I bought a house on Firth. Saw them live around this time and have always felt that the sign of greatness is a bands ability to play their studio stuff the same live Just saw Steve's show late last year and he still sounds just like this performance back then. Thank you for posting this.

I saw The Musical Box in 2017. Very good. Had seats only third row from the front, to the left of the stage. The singer does Peter Gabriel spot on. GENESIS actually sanction them and original costumes are used. Phil Collins has also played drums with them. Peter took his children to see them too...

Peter Gabriel’s voice and way of singing and mixture of richness & imagination in his singing are unbelievable. Take every album in where he’s a front man from “ From Genesis to revelation “ up to “the lamb lies down on Broadway 🎭 and realize what I mean . That’s the reason Phil Collins could not replace him after his departure from the band on May 1975 . No offense, but his good ( Phil ) only in drumming. The talent Peter had ( including his masks ) couldn’t be in Phil 🎤 singing. Once again didn’t mean to offense anybody

What a pleasure, this is the greatest band ever, but badly underrated because what they mostly did were art songs, not true rock music. Not the classical lieder art songs, but their own. Sir George Martin seemed to acknowledge the latter: sooner or later Genesis will have to inspire classical composers.

Ricardo Martinez No not underated, Steve Hackett is still playing this song and many other of the great songs written by Genesis with his band of fine musicians 18 years into the 21st century, and are recognised as Prog Rock artists of the 20th century. Along with much more of the incredible music written by prog groups of the seventies, this music will be heard in years to come, long after we have gone, and as you say will inspire many to recreate it to audience

I've just decided that this is without doubt my favourite Genesis song of all time...great to hear Tony play the intro....even though it's not on a grand piano you can clearly hear how complex and challenging that part is to play...I take my hat off to you....this clip also reminds me how stale and boring current bands are at presenting their material live on stage....we need more Peter Gabriels.....more innovation....would have been nice if Steve Hackett could have stood up though....:)

It's just fabulous isn't it? Breath-taking. Still sounds so good after all these years. I've never seen Tony play the keyboard intro live before as it was sadly skipped in future tours (even the 'Seconds Out' version is devoid of it). Roger King plays it with Steve Hackett's 'Genesis Revisited' tours every time and it really does sound great included.

The electric piano he had for touring was a bit rubbish, seems like he could have found one that sounded better. But it was 1974, maybe there weren’t any that sounded more like real pianos then.
@adolforodolfo6929
@adolforodolfo6929 2 жыл бұрын
@@MDK2_Radio Absolutely right. In 1974 the only way you could have something that sounded like a real piano on stage was to have a real piano. Some bands did it; ELP, and Jethro Tull certainly did, but it's a big thing to transport and horribly complicated to mike up - and Genesis didn't have anything like the kind of money that ELP and Tull had. I think Tony does a pretty good job here with an electric piano that doesn't have any dynamics at all. It's the reason that Tony stopped playing the piano intro live - he felt that he couldn't do it justice with the instruments/technology available at the time. Roger King does play it live because (a) he has the equipment to do that and (b) he has all of Tony Banks chops - more probably.
