I had the privilege of sitting down with the man himself, Christoph Kemper, during NAMM week 2023 and he was kind enough to share 5 new updates coming to the Kemper as well as discuss profiling, guitar tone and guitar players in general.

This interview made me want to buy a Kemper. This business model is really unique. Mr. Kemper has added more and more and more value to his original design, without leveraging all the money he could have made with a Kemper 2, 3, etc. People are asking to spend more money on hardware when the designer hasn't reached the limit of his original design. That's pretty wild.

IMO this is one of the best upgrades I could’ve imagined… some say the KPA isn’t worth the cost any longer, but I think that’s short sighted based on how the support is unparalleled.

I feel the opposite. In 2012 or so when it launched i remember thinking that was really expensive for a digital unit but after seeing what it does, it's a freaking bargain.

@@Matt_on_lifeI think they differ on the timing in comparison to the people you were referring to in your comment. "...isn't worth the cost any longer" suggests that it was worth earlier and now it isn't. Where as the other viewpoint is that it wasn't worth earlier but is worth now.

I’m really enjoying this… such great conversation and history. I’m sure there are interviews with CK out there about the history, but having a video interview is so great and feels interactive with HW’s skills. Great job 🎉

Thank you for posting the whole interview! One question remains to me - if I haven’t missed it: There was nothing said about how future prove the HW platform remains to be. Still impressed with how Kemper made all happening so far by „just“ updating the SW.

It would be great to see profile makers update their profile packs to include the Liquid Profile and offer “upgrades” to us, on the packs we bought in the past. Hopefully at a lesser price than having to repurchase the packs 😉 Just thinking ahead to when it becomes available…

In all of my rigs I use morphing, I sometimes reduce the original gain in the low position of the exp. pedal and increase in max position. Will that interfere when adding liquid parameters?

I was actually hoping Kemper would offer some kind of merge functionality, where you can merge all the profiles of the same amp made at different (gain) settings into one 'liquid' or gain-accurate profile. Also, how will liquid profiling 'calculate' the behaviour of my unique amps (since they will never make a model/tonestack for those specific amps, maybe something close at best)?
@Johnsormani
@Johnsormani 5 ай бұрын
Exactly my idea. Or have the profiling done in two or three steps. Probably the reason that they didn’t implement that is that users would tweak the knobs anyway and create a heap of support tickets. But then again, with morphing you sort of have this kind of functionality as well so it must be possible to implement

Actually there was already some commercial products on the market that used impulse responses before the Kemper hit the market. A famous one was the audioease altiverb convolution reverb, which let you have copies of famous studio rooms and cathedrals in you home studio

USB audio is a must in any device of that kind/price these days. I don't care about liquid profiling, in fact, as a user, I don't care about profiling part at all. Have Kemper stage in my studio and use commercial profiles. What I am looking for is a small "profile player" unit, 3 switches like Helix Stomp, Tonex, FM3 etc., with a USB audio, so I can use it at home or take it on the road. Will pay up to 1000 euro for it. But it doesn't look like Kemper is going to do it. I will wait a little still, but then will most likely purchase a Tonex, FM3, or similar size device.

Accurate Profiles? Really, so you trust the KZfaqr influencers sitting at home claiming to know how to make accurate Profiles? Like the one guy who left Pure cabinet ON when Profiling and didn't realise it before posting all over KZfaq? Or the other scientists doing NUL tests? Make two different QC or ToneX captures of the same amp, change one EQ setting or move the mic an inch, now NUL test the two Captures and the result will be a NUL test failure. There are dozens of Profiling videos on KZfaq where Andertons, Rob Chappers, Tim Pierce, Rick Beato's studio engineer, Nashville engineers, etc etc didn't know whether they were playing the Profile or real amp....so what accuracy are you talking about, KZfaqr influencers sitting in their amateur studios looking for subscribers and hits? You're missing the point. The Kemper sounds amazing and that's why thousands of guitarists and touring bands playing to sold out arenas use them live whilst other guitarists spend their lives watching KZfaq videos searching for ways to waste more money on gear they don't need!

It’s been ten years, technology moves forward. Things get updated, . It would make sense the process, would be updated. Also, I have both and the tonex does feel a little different and takes pedals better. I still gig with and use the kemper all the time in the studio but an update of the process makes sense. Also, the null tests may not be the end all be all but they do point to something.

Not to mention the namm algorithm was just basically given out for free. All modelers and profilers should get an update or alteration based on that. It should help with the process for anyone in this industry

I think Kemper is going to get priced out of the market - if something was to happen to my Kemper I don't think I could justify buying again (and I love it and have probably over 2k invested in profiles). They need to keep to market with something in the 1k range.

the new friedman ir x is a kemper slayer .it sounds way better and it's simpler to use ,it's a real tube preamp designed by a great amp builder not some keyboard player. modelers had their time when they made musicians become programmers and waste hours of their lives those days are done.

The fact that they think all drive pedals practically the same or just a tube screamer with eq shows they don't understand the market let alone drive pedals. At this point I don't really see people switching back to Kemper just because of liquid profiling, theyve moved on to other things and I would bet are addicted to the functionality other modellers provide that Kemper just doesn't have a clue about. It really sucks though that he patented liquid profiling, just gonna make it harder on other brands to figure out a work around. And based the way he was talking I wouldn't expect Kemper 2 in this decade, and even then I bet it is almost the same as Kemper 1, ie, no large LCD screens, multiple processors and split signals, ability to assign any controls to any footswitches. Its also interesting that they never talk about the built in power amps that some of the units had and how they will improve the design so that they don't fail or people have to use an external device
@Johnsormani
@Johnsormani 5 ай бұрын
Firstly, why would a manufacturer have to share there invention with their competitors by not patenting it? Then I have the impression that 99,9% the guitarists that move away from Kemper to axefx , helix ,QC etc are only into heavily distorted sounds.
@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender
@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender 5 ай бұрын
@@Johnsormani its for the betterment of the industry. Kemper isnt willing to make the harder the people are wanting so let someone else do it. And i would disagree about only distortion seeking players leaving Kemper, id say its pretty equal, if anything the distortion guys are the ones staying with Kemper. If they are leaving its because kemper doesnt model distortion pedals, it might be hard for some to understand why thats a big deal, but most people need the flexibility

@@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender I bought my kemper 10 years ago. It was a huge game changer back then. Now , with all the competitors it might look different .but nobody is complaining that a 68 plexi doesn’t have a reverb or chorus built in 10 years after introduction. Many guitar players nowadays are just focusing on the perfect standalone sound . They don’t care about how it sounds in a band or a mix or if the audience hears a difference . Many are more focused on their sound than on making music. I play guitar since 45 years, design and build my own tube amps, but still I see a huge value in the profiler , even after a decade of use
@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender
@BobbyCulpepper.srv3fender 5 ай бұрын
@@Johnsormani i disagree, i think most players want a base sound and then work from that up with pedals and effects, be it analog, profiled or modelled. I open for a lot of touring acts about 60-75% use modellers. The Kemper is starting to sound dated. It may have been the best 5 years ago. But now i notice it sticking out in a plastic way, although the audience mostly cant tell the difference

It’s a shame… having USB audio support after years and years dealing with crappy SPDIF, marketing BS with the « liquid » stuff, will not improve the inaccuracy about high gain amps and the the lacks of low end for many profiles of gainy amps… I mean at 600€ the kemper could be a nice deal but not at 1700€. You can now have an FM3 with better sound, a ToneX or even the top of the top = NAM plugin and its stunning neural network tech.
